I tried this trick with the private jack. I broke in the speaker with a variac as well and the results are astounding. Excellent video!!!!

Great information on breaking in a new speaker & adding doping. I have several tube amps I've built with new speakers & I can't wait to utilize your technique to add more color. Thanks

Johan Segeborn has a video comparing a creamback to an original Greenback speaker, and the tone difference is exactly what you describe and you can visually see the difference the 1970 Greenback has little to no dope and the modern creamback is loaded with dope. Also the description word, “detail” is used in exact same circumstances, I.e. the speaker has more detail in the upper mids, highs. So a speaker with less detail will correlate with it having more dope.

After watching this video I decided to try this myself. I didn't a-b, or before/after test itbut, after I took alittle of the dope off the outer dimension, and the cone, I put it all back together and it still works fine, and maybe has that warmer tone, I don't really know. Nonetheless, I didn't damage it at all so, I may have even improved the sound somewhat.

+August Lyons yep ... not for the metal crowd but yes softer cones = the older sound

You mentioned it sounds deeper when you tap the speaker, but does it also sound deeper when playing? Another question, does it sound a little louder?

Sounds a little deeper and is a hair quieter on the annoying frequencies… just like an older speaker

No, thanks. I'd better use paralon or cover (veneer) to tame the highs and it will sound the same as aged speaker.

could this be don from the back of the speaker instead from the front? i dont feel like unscrew my speakers hehe

I suppose you could … not sure how uniformly you could do the process that way … sometimes you just have to push down your fear to learn new things … however if you regularly break stuff and can’t operate a screwdriver… then go with your idea …I’m not being insulting… I just know people who know they should avoid tools and know their limitations…

@@patfurlan yeah. Its not that I dont know how to don it. Its just that its such a hassle to remove the top sitting on the cab and then demount the speakers do the thing and then put it all back together. I guess i could try the aceton process on some speakers i have lying around before i take the cab apart lol

To each their own but imo opinion this is insane to spend time doing this. Buy a speaker that you like better.

I’ve bought many speakers over the years … some ended up in boxes on a shelf till I discovered this … now they are back in amps and sounding great … unfortunately you can’t get much for a used speaker… since I have started doing this I don’t buy as many speakers as I can dial them in myself
Upgrading your guitar speakers is DUMB.........here's why.
