Michael, you don't actually have to dive into the lyrical aspect of Kendrick's tracks. In fact, I actually like that you are mostly focusing on his musicality. There are already plenty of channels that covers his lyricism, but only a few really highlights his musicality. Please dive further into Kendrick's discography ❤️
@NewColossusNorthingАй бұрын
Especially because so much of his music is written within concept albums, lyrical analysis of any one track is bound to miss the mark. Diving into the musical planning and execution works a lot better for the format and, as you say, digs into aspects of the songs that maybe don’t get overlooked, but definitely go under-discussed.

Two things. 1. Been listening to Kendrick for about 11 years, and feel genuine pure happiness when I see someone who notices and appreciates him for not just rapping but his overall musical prowess. So watching someone else geek out about it brings me jooooy. 2. There’s something you do that had me HOOKED! When you cut off the camera, but have your mic still on and I can hear you speak or move around or say something extra…that does something to me lmao!! It’s like getting a peek into your mind or how you really felt about what you just saw, and most times it’s somewhere along the line of being in awe. I love filmmaking and that is something people do in documentary style films to show a “when no one’s around, how do you REALLY act?” moment. So whether or not that’s on purpose, keep doing it! Also, DO MORE KENDRICK REACTIONS PLEASE!! Love the content and big up your son 🥂

Kendrick is the paradigm for peak lyricism combined with musicality, and I've consistently seen him surround himself with talented musicians to match, so it feels so wholesome and great to see your excitement and appreciation for how he and his producer/band/whoever else is involved sets things up and/or reacts. It just all feels so intentional and helps to elevate the whole performance, so I get it, and I appreciate your ability to help put into words what that is as it happens.

I always start a Kendrick song trying to figure out the melody. I quickly realize his voice is the most prominent instrument. I think the great thing about those series of Kendrick Lamar's Untitled songs is that they're always very poetic. The flow is very much reminiscent of free verse poetry. Sometimes you may get a rhyme sometimes you don't. The flow is purposefully transitioning between different pockets and inconsistent. This type of flow goes really great over any groove or Funk band backing. The same way that Tim Henson is a guitarist guitarist Kendrick Lamar is a rapper's rapper.

I think it's absolutely fine on the first listening coast along with the Groove that is present especially as a musician who could be adding their own Flair to it. The whole point of doing this over that type of GrooVe is for that purpose. Rap is more percussive anyways so appreciate the flow. It may not be the first thing that other people catch or that other people find themselves drawn to but if it's what you're drawn to as a musician, stick with it. It's much appreciated here. Doing two or three listens of any Kendrick Lamar song is honestly the best way to interact with it anyways. When a rapper picks a flow like this that is very very phonetically different from a lot of the popular music that's out now that is very intentional and it's meant to reach out to other artists and draw respecting that way.

I’m sure you’re about to get into it, but this song is a great example of how Kendrick uses his voice as a percussive instrument to add variety and tension/release to what is otherwise a very standard progression and beat. Don’t worry about getting into the lyrics man, smoke one and listen on your own time with Genius up and have fun. Start with tpab and gkmc, both lyrically complex and fantastic. But anyways, yeah - your perspective on the musicality and the instrumentation is valuable and unique, just do what u do!
