St. Paul and Broken Bones is a cool group, Rob Aldridge and the Proponents are killer, their lead guitarist Rob Malone is a graduate of GIT as well. The Fiddleworms for a local band they have a heck of a pedigree of musicians, bassist David McKay toured and played with The Grateful Dead, Rob Malone guitarist tons of session work he was with Drive-by Truckers for a while, and Mitch Mann guitarist killer player, on keys Chalmers Davis and Clint Bailey who both have toured and played with seems like everyone from Little Richard to Alman Brothers.

I've been following Madison for quitge a while and am totally knocked out by everything she does. She's a fine guitarist, an even better singer, and above all a fabulous songwriter. I've heard a lot of people in my life, but she's just about my favorite of the current generation. You owe it to yourself to search and listen to more. No two songs remotely the same. (She also does some excellent covers). There's plenty to listen to out there. Try "When Love Loves Alone" or "Something to Believe In" if you want to hear some gorgeous ballad material. She was a regular guest solo on Chris Thile's radio show when it was on, which should send you a message. This girl is 100% the real deal. Listen to more.

Chris, I am not a musician, but love watching your reaction to different genres of music and I am blown away with how incredibly talented guitarists are. Now, for the past few months I've been exploring my tastes and revisiting musicians from my past, it has been an incredibly enlightening journey. One of the artists I had never heard of until recently, yet was responsible for some of my favourite tunes, was a west Texas legend named Towns van Zandt. Though he plays acoustic guitar and has country folk roots, maybe not the type of music you usually cover, his rendition of 'Pancho and Lefty' while sitting in his cabin is one of the truly most memorable clips Ive ever enjoyed.....I hope you check him out if for nothing else but for your own enjoyment, he's a true repesentative of Americana. Take care, love your enthusiasm, and your love of teaching.

Dude, I just discovered this too, via Cory Wong, and as a very experienced guitar player I was blown away just like you are. I love how you're bopping to it-- same happened to me. This woman is a phenomenal singer, songwriter, and guitar player. Love your harmonic and rhythmic breakdown going on. This sounds very easy, and is actually pretty easy to play once you watch her breakdown, but it is actually harmonically very interesting with intentional use of dissonance, etc.

Happy coincidence that Madison Cunningham has been opening for another one of your recent discoveries (Bahamas) ...some absolutely world class musicianship on display here. really love how you break it all down in terms of theory/key and time signatures..and I especially like the message here to aspiring musicians that sometimes you can''t put words to it, because it just sounds good. Revisited this after seeing her Tiny Desk concert release today. So good. But Mike, I feel like you’d have an easier time figuring out what people are playing when they’re playing in open tuning if you keep in mind hand position . It’s easier to get spicier sounds in open tuning because you don’t have to reach four frets with your pinky since you have only 3 notes shared over 6 strings (if you will). Almost think ergonomically first vs. theoretically

That tongue twister dissonance is what makes Madison the best. She pulls off these beautifully ugly half step rubs within a catchy groove with pop sensibility. Also, what's even more wild is it isn't an alt tuning but rather just tuned down to C so all the standard voicings apply. She's just that wicked and knows what's up

I don't know if anyone has already said it but, Madison made a playthrough video for this very song on her youtube channel. For this song she is in 2 whole steps down tuning, so C standard (from bass to treble C-F-Bb-Eb-G-C). The minor major mixture of this riff is very cool I love that sound. She plays a lot of clusters and dissonant stuff all very cool sounding. I love this song! She has a lot of very cool songs, I would recommend All at Once and Song in my Head. There are some videos of her at Paste Magazine, the one with the band is so cool, you guys should take a listen.

For me, another very strong impression watching her was to see all that she didn't play. Such careful selection of each note and no waste. I played a few parts over again just to marvel at the space between notes. I did the same as you, right in the middle of Gordon Mote/Bukovac, I went to check this out; then going back to Gordon's wonderful lecture, he commented on the idea of how important the spaces between notes are!

I agree, the added rhythm guitar on this performance actually takes away from the feel of Madison”s guitar playing and the lines/parts she's put together. The guitar part she’s put together is meant to shine with bass and drums only as a three piece (as it does in the Paste Studio session) . Everything about this song from the composition, the singing, the guitar parts is brilliantly phenomenal. I would love Michael P to take another stab at this with the C tuning, it seems that this tuning is key to why the guitar sounds and feels the way it does in this tune.
@Yelbomsirhc1

I agree with you that open tunings and just being open and creative with fingerings leads to interesting chord structures, often with tension created by dissonance, that create original sounds. The harmonic analysis comes later....but I totally agree with your analyses as to what makes this song really pop. Basically she's playing jazz chords with modal jazz harmonic movement and dissonance/chromatic/diminishy/tritone-y sounds....but via a creative back door. The sounds sprout organically from interesting fingerings combined with parallel movement up the neck....and letting her gifted ear pick and choose what works. FILTHY! SO GOOD! This is the opposite of the classic Berklee/GIT-schooled shredder approach of taking some cool chord or scale or theory knowledge, and using that as a launch point. This is using the guitar and a great, creative ear with an open mind to serendipitously discover new sounds and tonalities.

I love that she goes to the 7/8 on the "I can't pin it down" lyric. It becomes harder to pin down the meter at the same time that she's literally singing "I can't pin it down.." The meter throws you for a loop, married with the meaning of the lyrics. I dunno if she meant that on purpose, but it's super cool. Love that....
@TheMrJjjaaammmeeesss

I'm sure the lyric is 'I can pin it down', which should be a confident statement but by singing it over a deliberately shifting chord meter the statement it sounds somewhat delusional. That's her genius!
