Great to see you doing this man- welcome back. The '98 Prague shows were my first time seeing and hearing Phish, pretty incredible introduction. I was backpacking in Europe and saw they were touring, so I jumped the train to Prague. I has heard of Phish, but had never heard a note of their music. @@harryhood24 Once the band authorizes another entity to record, distribute, & charge for the recording the company made (I don't recall if it was Nugs or LivePhish now but both are outside entities). Glad to see you doing Phish again. 45 year old musician here. Many, many, many influences over the years, across a wide spectrum of genres and sub genres. Seeing phish in 04, SPAC, NY, was probably the single most impressive display of musical prowess I’ve ever seen. I just remember leaving the show thinking ‘what’s the point… I will never be that good’. I’ve been playing since I was 13 and would like to think I know a fair amount, and that show still has me dumbfounded. Anyways, quick sidebar story time. The cool thing about where you started is that they're starting this Ghost while segueing out of the previous song, which is called AC/DC Bag. So at the very beginning, they're still playing the previous song's chords, which are A-C-D-C-F-A-G. Since both are in A, it's an easy switch from the former to Ghost. You're dead-on right with the F# too...almost all Phish jams over minor chords feature dorian jamming.

So one of the things about Phish that you point out is in this rendition of Ghost, Mike particularly stands out. I don’t know how deep into Phish you are, but their sound kind of morphs over the years and 97-98 are very important years for Mike. The bass/rhythm sound during these years is affectionately referred to as “Cow funk”. I would encourage you to check out Split Open and Melt from November 6, 1998 for what is in my humble opinion one of the best examples of cow funk. Also the SOAM jam has a really cool form where the boys flip the downbeat and the upbeat at the end of every fourth measure thereby jamming four measures on the downbeat and then four measures on the upbeat which makes for some really interesting, spacey, sometimes even dark and menacing sound spaces that they explore. Anywho, always interesting watching somebody else break Phish down. God bless!

You can say the boys still have some magical moments these days, but in my humble opinion, they were just on fire from 93-98. Peakin out in 95. Quadrophenia is one of the few Halloween Shows I've missed. And absolutely love The Who. Quad and Tommy are both definitely top 10 albums for me. Tommy probably top5. Saw White Album missed Quad the next freakin Halloween I missed. 🤦 Waiting For Columbus. Another top 10 all-time for me. Last one I was at was Chilling Thrilling Sounds. And not only did I have that album as a kid. Listened to it all the time. And remembered most of the album pretty well. I was blown away with that show more than most were. Haven't been to the last several. Don't tour anymore, pushing 50 years old. And I'm not really too hurt about it. Did suck missing Ziggy. And second biggest regret, not going to Utah after Vegas. I know musically it wasn't the greatest show. But Harpua>Dark Side>Harpua I would have lost my shit. Floyd was my favorite band and as many early shows as I did. I never got a full beginning to end Harpua. Until 3.0 SPAC Harpua>Kissed a Girl. My buddy happened to be looking at me when I heard the Oompaa start. And he said that is happiest I've ever seen you look. And I seriously think you jumped about 5 feet in the air. Biggest Phish regret while I'm babbling. Great Woods '94. Venue is about 20 minutes from my house. I had tickets, but my sister's Graduation Party was that night. And at that time, my family would have killed me for missing it. Of course that was the last Gamehenge. Like everyone else. I've been praying for one ever since. Nowadays my family expects it. Missed my biggest family reunion ever. Only time all my Canadian and all other wayward relatives were all together. Only person not there. I was on tour in '96.

@@johnfede7057 yeah right on brother. Funny when Quadrophenia started, most of the young crowd around me didn’t know what they were playing I’ll be 54 in June and my touring days have been gone since 04. Caught a few shows around Chicago since then but not many. BTW, what made 95 Halloween so special was not knowing that much about Gamehenge etc.. and the dose that night was intense, so hearing Divided and Harpua for the 1st time trippin balls was a very magical moment for me. @@deangoritz9625 I always seemed to miss Harpua by one show. Prime example summer '03 started at Alpine went to N.C. skipped Star Lake & Camden cause it's Camden. Stopped home in the Boston area. To recharge, shower grab some friends. Then head up Loring for I think IT. Of course the next show after I left tour Harpua. Then there was that Loring Encore woops. They finished at Oswego but wasn't complete. Just always seemed to miss it by a show or 2. Kinda funny I saw like 5 Forbin>Mocking with narrations. Which alot of people only one or two if any. But somehow always missed Harpua.

@@deangoritz9625 I'd say I'm semi-retired at this point. This summer Great Woods. Twenty minutes from home. Although it is probably a top 3 worst venue to see Phish. But I've gotten so many amazing shows there. Just the venue sucks. And Hartford which is like 2 hours away. But my last single touring brother lives South Springfield MA about hour 15 drive for me. And he's about 30-40 minutes away from Hartford. And only time we hang out these days is at shows. But that's it. Just local shows. Did my 1st Mexico this year because first time and was my last hurrah. Last place I've never seen them. My big show of the summer, technically fall. It's the week after Labor Day. Finally going to see the one I've never seen live. Always seem to miss them for some reason. Tenacious D up on Lake Winnipesaukee in NH.

Yes!!! So glad to see phish back in the repertoire for you…and way to kick it off with an absolute banger. Some of my favorite moments is the beginning of Trey’s solo. Octave pedal engaged (I think whammy actually dropped an octave) and some mighty tasty licks before the ultimate onslaught. Keep them coming!!

"The struggle of a lifetime, just not going for it right out of the gate"...Exactly! These guys are great at metering out where they want to go. Just adding little bits here and there, and before you know it, they're on to something else. :)

ok then. Trey rips. For the many years and number of song choice solos, my lord we have a long way to go to keep diving in. Have not found a drum machine yet that can work like Fishman. LOL He is the man and IMO completely under rated in the drum world. Except for those who KNOW.

gordons musicianship is oftenly not appreciate other than "hes dropping bombs" really fun performance everyone grinning ear to ear and thats music :) i just love free flowing in moment music. analysis is spot on as usual and its not easy with all effects to get the science or theory out of it. Great video for phish fan to watch they would learn a lot👏You hear fishman like we do he is so good hes like a clock made by zappa lol. Band cant play like this without him. Thank you mike !!!🙏 People don't break down such improvisatory music you do it quite easily and this wasnt "broad strokes " smoking show. You great enthusiasm and passion for music

Great vid! I really enjoy the theory breakdown. You missed the start/stop jam at the end, though. Lol. They come back in after that hard stop. Also, go back and take in how juiced Trey is to hit that whammy pedal at 9:50 of the video itself to shift that pitch up! There's a reason LazyLightning zoomed in on his face! Absolute peak Trey!
