I'm 59, and I find it amazing that my generation's music can be appreciated by young people (like this guy) with such obvious enthusiasm and knowledge. It would be as if I, in my youth, had loved and appreciated artists from my parents era, or even earlier...I was certainly aware of it, but never would have found it "cool" or exciting. Which, in turn, makes me so proud to be from a generation that gave the world such enduring and still-interesting and exciting music. Yay us!

Thanks, this is excellent. I've been a Stones addict all my life. Saw them 14 times and in 1969, in the Air Force, saw them four times in two days. The Ya ya's Tour. twice on Saturday at the University of Illinois and then twice, 125 miles north to Chicage at the Chicago Amphitheater. The last night, I figured out a way to get in front of the center aisle. BAM, it starts...I stand up and feel the pressure. I'm 10 feet from the stage and there's a cordon of police with batons. There was violence at the Democratic Convention recently and Jagger is singing Street Fighting Man. The moral of the story is I ended up pressed hard, dead center, with Mick about 4 feet away. I could see Keith's fillings. I saw the entire concert right there. Mick Taylor on the left and Charlie, the metronome who's perfect for their sound. I don't mind my hearing aids !! I agree my favorite sound was with Brian but Listen to Taylors lead at the back of 'Can't you hear me knockin'. I think they were a better blues band with Taylor and a more original band with Brian.

Beautiful playing and the analysis was spot on. I would only add never underestimate the role of Bill Wyman on tracks like I Wanna Be Your Man, Mother's Little Helper, Paint in Black, and 19th Nervous Breakdown.

Great video. I agree about the Stones. A very unique band with probably the greatest front man of all time other than Elvis! Good Times, Bad Times is one of my all-time favorite songs. not only is the guitar playing great but whatever that 12 string guitar is he used on that track it just sounds so great. there was a top 100 guitarists ever poll a couple years ago, 2 guitarists who were not in the list we're later added. The people were asked to vote and a vast majority kept asking why Keith Richards and Malcolm Young were not on the list... and they kept asking, and eventually the powers that be (guitarworld, rolling stone mag etc) added them. Such is the impact these 2 brilliant guitarists had on the world.

Growing up in the 60's my older brother loved the Beatles. I, being the rebel, loved the Rolling Stones. That was over 50 years ago. I still love the Stones for their music and I have great admiration for the fact that they have stayed together for so many years. I would think it would be tough to keep a band together that long.

We shouldn't forget Ronnie Wood - the main thing here in my opinion ist how the guitar section ineracts with each other - and by the way both give me hope that there is a real chance to get old in dignity ;)

Really good video, Tom. I learned stuff. (I've always played Brown Sugar in standard tuning, and the required fretting makes it tough to get the chords as silky and raunchy as on the original.) Now, I want to encourage listeners to pay particular attention to two songs on Sticky Fingers. 1. Sway: the front end (with vocals) might not draw everyone in, but later, Mick Taylor just climbs to the stratosphere, patiently and forcefully, and pushes every emotional button that rock guitar soloing was invented for. It's shocking! 2. I Got the Blues: overall a fine white-soul 3/4 ballad with interesting transitions and tasteful instrument layering, and then... that oh-so-brief Billy Preston organ solo. So much emotion in those long notes, stops, and short fiery bursts!

I can barely manage to record myself with my crappy phone camera to show my friends, and here you are producing something fit for network TV. You don't even cut in the performance pieces; it's one solid take with the backing tracks magically starting and stopping with perfection. Please tell me you're independently wealthy and you've hired an entire staff of AV professionals to do all this for you. Right?

I completely agree with you on "Under my Thumb." While I've never been a big fan of the words, I love the layers of melody in the instruments. In addition to the vocal line and the marimba, the bass has its own line, similar to the marimba line. The guitar plays light accents, and I think I hear a fuzz bass.

I wish people would stop comparing the Stones to the Beatles. They were completely different styles. The Stones were a classic blues band backing a single fantastic vocalist. The Beatles were a harmonizing vocal group with a folk rock backing track.

Hi, great video. Another point that is often overlooked is that The Stones were one of the few bands that didn't follow the drummer. Everyone in the band followed Keith. It's one of the reasons The Stones don't sound like anyone else.

That counter melody you did on "sitting on a fence" was very reminiscent of Knopfler's approach (to my ear). Very cool !

Great great video, except ... not a word about Ron ? I think there is an 8th reason why the Stones kick ass : they are fantastic, exceptional, on stage. And Ron was born to be Keith's accomplice in front of a 50.000 people audience, and proved it once more during the 2018 tour. He exsudes joy - which Taylor really did not - and his togetherness with Keith is a pleasure to see and hear. Also, Brian was more universal and original, Taylor was more of a virtuoso solist, but with Ron there is less of "A soloist and a rythm guitar" and more of two guitars answering each other. Keith + Ron = an incredible musical engine (plus, of course, Charlie's unique drive). And that, also, kicks ass. All three line-ups are great, but I love this one. And one more thing : dear Mick, get well. GET WELL !

The Stones were musical geniuses. Their music was far more complex and interesting than most other before or since. Their innovations fusing early rock and roll with rhythm and blues were amazing, as was the diversity of instruments including Brian Jones on the recorder (Ruby Tuesday), marimba, sitar on a few songs, church organ and London Bach Choir (You can't Always Get What You Want} , Jagger on harmonica (Sweet Virginia), strings and brass (She's a Rainbow). The rhythm and blues add incredible richness. Kieth Richards' guitar riffs were amazing. Brilliant lyrics: Sympathy for the Devil, Mother's Little Helper, Paint it Black and others. Credit is also due to the studio musicians and arrangers like Nickey Hopkins, Jack Nitzsche, John Paul Jones, Merry Clayton (Gimme Shelter) and manager/drummer/musician Jimmy Miller. No other group even comes close. Listen to a piano cover of Angie and study the composition. I challenge all of you musicians to equal or exceed the Rolling Stones. We want more music of that quality. sition.

Growing up a fan of The Who, Zepp, etc. ... I always thought the Stones were sloppy/lazy. Live performances were half hearted & Jagger would mumble most of the lyrics. Only recently have I come to appreciate the genius. They created some of rocks most iconic and catchy songs.
