No offense to Broderick (who is great), but the one area Gus G is a monster is in string muting, which is a huge thing. He's playing on Blackouts here and they are hot pickups.

My kids (Not teens yet) love Gus G., Satriani, & Bettencourt! I think it’s the hair & the tone lol! For me it’s the style of playing, tone, & approach to rock guitar. I have to listen to some more Chris Broderick. I’ve only heard the ‘System has failed’ album with MEGADETH. I thought maybe Chris wasn’t allowed to be as creative with Dave, but I’m curious as to what he can do with his skills.

Would be killer to see Broderick do a solo tour with his own composed classical pieces. Passive pickups with a Floyd Rose and a tungsten block lends sustain forever, of course coupled with the right woods, and neck joints. Both great guitarists, but both seem boxed in with their current jobs in their respective bands. Broderick has the skills to take his exposure to a much broader audience if willing to jump out of his current gig for a minute to see what's behind the other paths in guitar playing and composing.
@majav15mg
@majav15mg 3 жыл бұрын
What right woods? Why does that matter?
@bdubz5150
@bdubz5150 3 жыл бұрын
@@majav15mg Resonance response, snap, harmonics. Wood combinations play a role in tone. A big role, unless your an active pickup player, then wood has less equity in the tone. IE, a guitar made of spanish cedar as opposed to a guitar made of northern ash will sound very different on the spectrum. This is why the "Holy Grail" metal combo is so popular with some. Basswood body, maple top and a quartersawn maple neck lends nice growling tones used in metal chords and offers snappier lead tones. It all depends on the flavor of tone the individual player likes tho, but wood influences tone alot. In big box guitar companies they will usually fill, base coat, and layer coat a guitar body and neck with high build paints which tames the wood influences somewhat, but they do that to get a product that all sound the same. Boutique and custom builders aren't looking for unity so much between their build tones, rather build to bring the wood tones out. So you'll see thinner paints and sometimes just wax and oil. Acoustic and classical instrument builders especially.
@majav15mg
@majav15mg 3 жыл бұрын
@@bdubz5150 well, I don’t think that’s true. On electric guitars, the effect that different species of wood has on tone is likely negligible. Besides, it’s subjective what “good” means anyway. You praise basswood in your reply, yet I’ve seen many people absolutely despise the wood. This topic probably isn’t worth discussing and it’s unlikely one of us will change minds.
@bdubz5150
@bdubz5150 3 жыл бұрын
@@majav15mg Your right probably not worth debating. I am a luthier of 22 years. When my guitars sell for upwards of $15,000, my clients want to know the tonal characteristics. I've done many tests with professional recording studios to find the wood variances, and tonal properties. It's been exhaustively discussed in many luthier articles as well. What I discovered I pass on, as to who wants to absorb that information is up to them. I watched Edward Van Halen pick up a guitar pluck the low E string, and tell me what kind of wood it was constructed with. I didn't praise Basswood, I simple used it as an example some call the holy grail when topped with maple. Anyways. Happy playing buddy!
