Yes the guns are across the country, in every single State, but not every single person like myself has a gun. and when you look at West Coast or North East States compared to South East or Southern States, the first two areas have much more harder gun laws compared to the last two areas. That is not to say that we don't need much better gun laws, be it State to State, or across the country, it is just to say that some areas are just a bit better then other areas when it comes to guns. That is what I am willing to guess, not know, but guess, that they where getting at, not the idea that guns where only in specific areas of the country.

My first time visiting the US (in '04) I landed at LAX alone and had to find my way to Anaheim. I had no idea how to do that, so when I spotted a cop I figured they might have some advice. Here's the thing, cops in NZ are generally helpful and friendly when out and about. Not so with this one. As I approached I made eye contact and smiled, and he responded by putting one hand on his holstered gun and raising the other to stop me. Welcome to America, indeed.

I, for one, would not consider traveling to the US because of the gun violence and also the political extremism in so many states. I lived in the US for 5 years in the 80's and 6 years in the 90's. The first time I returned to Europe, I was glad to get back to the different languages, the cultures, the history, etc. The second time I returned to Europe, I was glad to get back to feeling safe. So, no, I won't be going back to the US anytime soon and I advise my relatives and friends to avoid going there. There are so many other places on the planet that are safer and therefore more enjoyable. The shootings are nothing new. When I lived there in the 90's, some guy was shooting people randomly at gas stations in the state I lived in. In another area, some kids were shooting at cars on the highway. There were numerous incidents of people shooting other people because of car rage or neighbour disputes. That was bad enough. But now, nowhere is safe in the US - not schools of any level, not supermarkets, not shops, not restaurants, not churches or synagogues, not entertainment places. Perhaps the republicans (who oppose gun laws) don't want tourists. Perhaps they're afraid of them. Perhaps the republicans just want to ruin the formerly-United States. Who elects these idiots, anyway?!

We can't legislate it because of a congressional tool called the filibuster. Its makes it so that one of our congressional chambers requires 60 votes out of 100 to pass anything. What this means is that 11% of the population can control what is passed at the federal level. The right party (republican) is a very far right party. We don't have a 3rd party here really, so you are either voting liberal or conservative. A majority of people tend to stick with their party, so the right has to cater to the most extreme of their party. This ends up meaning that while 60-70 percent of the country believe abortion should be legal and a higher percent believes we need more gun legislation, certain states are taking a hard turn right to try to garner support from the trump base. The reason they can do this is because of how our political system works. There is no law prohibiting redrawing districts to gain political advantage. So what happens is that progressive areas have about an 80-90% support base where rural areas have a 60% support base. So they can spread their voters out more but ensure they just enough to win. But progressive areas are guaranteed to win with a 80-90% support. Its called gerrymandering. This is how the republican party has so much power even when a majority of the country is opposed. Sorry for longer rant, but you wanted to know how

Brit in New Zealand here, I’m in the camp of not visiting. I had a friend and coworker visit and I insisted she contact me if there was a mass shooting in her state as I wanted to know she was ok if this happened. Some of my team thought I was slightly over the top. Less than 2 days after she landed in the US there was the shooting at the parade with the mad man and his gun on the loose. Thankfully she messaged immediately so I was able to assure our team she was safe when the headlines reached us. For me, I’m not visiting until some laws changed on guns and rights of minority groups.

Their lobbyists, especially Tracey Wilson, self -proclaimed Gun Goddess, meet with the leadership of the Conservative Party of Canada regularly to discuss dismantling Canadian gun laws. 36 times this year alone. About the same number are killed by drunk drivers. About 80k die from alcohol. Often over 100k die from fentanyl. Over 200k die from medical malpractice in the US. About. 480k die from tobacco. I'm Australian and have had many people tell me they 'couldn't go there, not with all those snakes and spiders.' I'm yet to hear of mass killings from a snake or spider attack in a school or shopping mall. Among the comments on this video are suggestions like, 'catch a cab from the airport to the hotel. Catch a cab to the tourist spot and back to the hotel. Don't wander around.' In other words, consider the US to be a place of airports, hotels and tourist spots or theme parks, and nothing else. My wife and young son and I have spent time in Japan, staying in people's homes, walking the streets of cities, even being invited into a school when somebody saw our son and asked if we'd like to see what a Japanese school is like. We've wandered through the UK, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, staying with the local people and with the same almost aimless wandering through large cities and tiny towns. There's no way I'd consider the US for that kind of tourism.

I was in the states twice and one time I was with friends in sanfran at night going from pub to pub. Then we heard shots. Everyone went down on the ground, except us. We stood there as statues. A minute later, all went back to normalcy. Not us, we were completely in shock. After a while we were able to walk, nervously. Then… again shots… we lied on the ground immediately. After that, we went to the hotel and drank a beer in safety. The next morning, we ate a breakfast at a bar or something. Asked the bartender if he heard about the shooting. “Where was that?” he asked. “Just around the corner” we replied. “Oh, that’s odd. Usually it’s one block further” he said and went back cleaning up and whistled a happy song. Unbelievable, it’s simply added to culture there. How can one feel safe there?

It’s because Americans are seen as highly strung, quick to overreact especially the police. People end up dead for having a faulty taillight, so if you are a tourist, not familiar with the laws, or road rules you are at high risk. So, not an American citizen here, actually living in a country with a very high crime and gun violence rate that kinda puts the US to shame. I've visited the US twice in my life, once a trip along the east coast, and then a trip along the west coast... great experience, loved the stay. We had one single instance of being treated a bit roughly in... well, Florida of all places, while visiting Fort Lauderdale, but it wasn't anything major. But it was a bit racist... first time we had such an experience. We only noticed it was a bit racist after the whole thing was over, but it was really weird. Security guards shoving my family off the premisses on a museum or something that was closing down, but for whatever reason it was only us and not the tons of other tourists still in the area. They went right after us, and no one else, in a manner that was pretty weird. Again, nothing major, but there was something there. These days you'd call it a microaggression I guess. But this was back in the mid 90s, I was still a teen. Let me also add that I once considered going to the US in an interchange program, even studying there, and even moving for a while... those never happened, but it was less because of how I thought about the US, and more about my own circumstances. This was more towards the early 2000s. These days? I don't even think of visiting the US anymore. I really don't. Let alone moving. I guess I'd go on a tourism trip if family wanted to go and I was to accompany them, since I do speak English and all, but by my own will... just nope. Over the years my target changed from US to Japan I guess. xD My tastes too, so it's not all on the situation in the US, though it also is. But it's not just about gun violence, though this is a pretty big component part of it. It's about the political divide, the violent rhetoric of portions of the population, the prejudice that used to be a bit more implicit but it's becoming ever more explicit in parts of the country, and then the general thing about nationalism. It also has to do with how the US let late-stage capitalism take over. You know, it makes for a far less interesting place to visit when so much of what is there sums up to corporations and monopolies like Amazon and whatnot... But perhaps it's because I do follow US news a lot, so nowadays I know way more about all the bad news of the nation in general, and there is the amplifying effect that news tends to have. I am aware that like... it's obviously not all that bad, crazy people are still a minority much like in my own nation, I'd likely still have a great time there. But I guess MAGA Republicans and what people like Trump did and do has weight to it, for international tourists I mean. To be clear, I am very much conscious that my own country is worse in all aspects by far, and worse of all, we tend to mirror the worst tendencies that are happening in the US, so I really have no standing as a citizen of another nation to criticize. I'd never recommend anyone in developed nations visiting my country, that's for sure. xD Life in the US is several times better than here, and there are some major cities in my country that I myself would never set foot on. It's just that here in my country, I know the country, I have a better understanding on how things work and what to do, it's familiar to me and all that... as a tourist though, wherever it is, I feel far more vulnerable, so I'm the type of person that if I am to be taking a trip far away and pay a lot for that, I'll always opt for the safest possible places, places I can enjoy things the most, the places where there are the least chances of something going wrong. So the US is not a prime destination anymore. Well, if I'm being honest, I think the only destination I have in mind these days anymore is Japan... so I guess it's less of a US problem, and more on how obsessed I've become with Japan. :P I've also been in a few countries in Europe, and twice to Japan. Never had a bad experience so far, but I also didn't travel all that much, nor have the money to do it. :P
