Dont know if there is reason to encourage women into science. They are doing remarkably well in medicine so the time when they believed they cant do difficult brain work is clearly over. Well firstly, at the time, Amy and Bernadette were working at separate companies/universities though Amy would later move the university. Second, they never tried to examine the nuance of speaking to boys and girls differently. In all honesty, their attempts probably would have failed no matter what if they had used a gender neutral class but it would have been better to not wait till the end of the episode to consult their two female scientist friends.

Even when they do go into science, they usually go into the "soft sciences" (like Amy and Bernie). The hard sciences like Engineering and physics are dominated by men, even with the rise of programs literally designed to get more women in them. Dr. Jordan Peterson recently referenced a massive study in Scandinavia (where apparently the society is the most "gender egalitarian"). The women actually ended up going into women dominated careers even more, as did the men into male dominated careers. For example, the ratio of men to women engineers was even higher, as was the ratio of women to men nurses. This showed that it's more about interest than "discrimination". Interestingly, in societies where women are more discriminated against- like in the middle east- women tend to go into the STEM careers at an astounding rate, as a way out of those societies. My physics professor who was a female from Turkey told us about this on day 1. As it turns out, when left to their own devices, men and women are more likely to pursue careers based on interest, rather than necessity. James D'Amore also talked about this a few years ago, and unfortunately it got him fired...

But to clarify, it is not directly the fact of going on maternity leave that is the direct problem. What is happening is that many women anticipate that, for them, you can't have a family life whilst in research. Indeed, how can I do those crazy experiments that starts at 7am and finishes at 10pm the same day whilst taking care of a kid? Unfortunately that is the truth, many women are forced to chose family life Vs science. Nobody will quit science in anticipation of a long illness.

I am only aware that in Montreal, a woman ( well a man too but someone has to work) can take up to a year maternity leave up to 60 percent of take home pay. While theoretically it sounds great, the woman (or man) that takes a year break will be behind of all employees that were there for the year.

Personally, I don’t see anyone being “discouraged” from pursuing maths or other sciences. People just have different interests and choose to pursue different things. A person who is bad at math is not going to pursue a career in mathematics, a person who is bad in social interactions is not going to pursue a career in humanities or communication, a person who can’t sing is not going to pursue a career in singing, etc… I don’t understand this obsession where every career has to be 50/50 in gender. Everyone should be free to pursue what they want. Schools should aim to spark interest for all careers in all students, not just science and math
