I just wanna clarify for any new watchers that this may be your first video of: the supplement he's peddling isn't some secret magical supplement mix he's claiming is the key to fixing your aquariums that he alone can sell you, he actually has several videos outline exactly what he puts in it. The concept is literally just the walstad system (soil under sand) and then adding extra plant nutrients (iron, calcium, magnesium, etc etc) to bolster the tank's growth so it can bridge the limbo stage at about a year mark where the tank can fully start supporting itself through its own natural decomposition and nutrient recycling. You don't need to buy his supplement, but it's waaaay cheaper than buying all those supplements individually if you're on a small scale like I am, and it's a way to support fatherfish as well :)

Well…I have been trying to look for all the ingredients one by one and if I would to get them individually, it costs roughly close to or over 150 bucks, and each bag is tiny 5 lb under and some not even a pound. I mean with all the information Father Fish have giving us, I think it’s worth a try to get his fertilizer soil mix for 30$ +10$ shipping, and see if it’s worth it up to 100 g tank use like said. Or if you can share the better way to get them cheaper than that…

Cost is $20 + 10 for shipping for 100 gallons. At least a dozen ingredients to stabilize and make nutrients available long term. We are setting up a Father Fish center in Germany to provide product for the EU and GB.

Father fish method brought me back to fish keeping. I love it. I didn't have money for the suppliments. I just used potting soil and sand. So far its going well. Its been about 1.5 months and everything its growing very well and the fish are doing great. Hopefully it will last until the tank can provide the nutrients to make the plants flourish.

In Britain there is a garden culture. Often people will install ponds with fish and plants, etc. We had same in the 70's. Ask most people at some point had a garden pond. Other than a bit of food and once month daphnia treat, fish looked after themselves. The fairground fish grew to several inches. Many don't have that space now or no garden. So bring it into the home in a fish tank.

Hi Father Fish. Great video. I want to share a story. About a month ago I noted whitespot on one of my koi. Almost paniced. All my chemicals are always on standby to treat most conditions. At that time we entered the hottest time of the year in South Africa. My wife and I decided not to even catch the koi to do a scrape. We closely monitored the fish to see if the whitespot would spread. Well, it did not spread and dissapeared on the infected fish. Once again,, thanks for your great videos and I strongly agree to keep the chemicals away from your fish. Nature will provide.

As a side point, I once had self-sufficient a 5 gallon dedicated to gammarus and assellus which crashed in part to a timer failing and staying on all vacation. So if you have a crustacean heavy tank, I'd recommend having at least 8 hours of dark.

Dear Father Fish, I have been following you for a long time and I share most of your ideas and concepts with you, and I highly respect your work. However, I must tell you that I disagree when you say that you leave the lights on 24/7, since plants need periods of darkness to complete their photosynthesis-respiration cycle. Fish also need periods of darkness in their lives. All this is called "Circadian Rhythm", and it is very important for the well-being of the fish, since it influences the pineal gland and the secretion of melatonin. I hope you will study these concepts. I wish you the best and send you a big hug!!

@Fatherfish I can confirm that fish sleep. If you have guppies, turn off the light to the point where you can still see what goes on inside the tank. You will see some guppies park on the substrate to rest, other pick the middle and stay stationary. It may not be what we are used to as "sleeping" but it does visibly look like the fish equivalent of sleeping. You advocate for natural tanks but in nature where the sun sets and not allow for your tank to at least go dark for about 4-6 hours is a little disappointing to hear (Disclaimer: I do realize how weak tank lights are compared to the sun. Which is why I'd keep the lights on for about 16-18 hours per day

There is no alpha wave brain activity in fish. They stop moving when they cannot see where they are going. Fish are at rest most of the time so they are not resting any differently than during light. Shine a light at them in the dark and they will instantly dart, or will be attracted to the light. They do not have eyelids. They do not have variable brain activity. There is no sense in which fish can be said to sleep.
@EuroGupper

@@FatherFish This is how I filmed them in the dark. I turned on the flash light function of my mobile phone to record them in the dark. They just stayed right where they are. Some rest on the substrate and other just stay on top or midwater. They have these round glowing orange eyes in the dark But if you say they don't sleep I guess I believe you. Could just be that their definition of rest and sleep is different from our with higher brain activity. Because up until a few years ago science was also convinced that fish did not feel pain, which is very peculiar since whenever i used to cut into them or remove a fish hook I clearly saw hem struggling against the pain and not just finger or knife contact

@@FatherFish I humbly disagree. I have seen fish sleep both fresh water and salt water. I do know that some dont sleep at all and some are nocturnal. Don't you think that the light cycle is natural? Isn't it nature for there to be total darkness for some hours of the day? I agree with your stance on sunlight but just like sunlight, it can't be there 24 hours a day.
