The German composer Gustav Lange (1830-89) was extremely popular in the 19th c for his many salon pieces. Together with 'Edelweiss' this 'Flower Song' is his best-known, and remains very popular even today. I first recorded this piece in September 2007 on my old equipment, but several commentators found my rendition too fast. Here is my new (June 2009) recording of the piece, which I hope is more laid back, and certainly has better sound! My thumbnail uses a beautiful image by Clker-Free-Vector-Images from Pixabay ( tinyurl.com/ybnsjtd2 ).

The harp-like part of this song is really lovely. I played it once, but I couldn't play it as emotionally as you did. I'm glad to hear this after all these years.

I have been searching for this piece for years - My dear Mum used to play this piece to me when i was a child, she played it beautifully! God bless her! and so i have been very selective to try and find someone who can perform it as well as she did and you ate that person - thankyou so much! i can see her playing it when listening ( i hope thats ok with you) Beautifull performance - Thankyou Paul

My mother tried to remember this and play it yesterday on her 94th birthday. She struggled but today I took this in to her Care Home and played it to her. I am so pleased I found it. And it takes me back to my mother playing it when I was a little girl. I probably haven't heard it for about 50 years.

Jacqui Davis Thank you Jacqui! And congratulations to your mother on making 94! I hope she enjoyed the video - and it is great that she can still play a little at that age. I hope I can still find a few notes should I be lucky enough to live that long!

Thank you. That's a really kind comment. I'm sure it's an aberration in the history of music appreciation that today's listeners select a tiny proportion of composers working in any historical period to the exclusion of all the others. Curiously, minor baroque and renaissance composers are more readily accepted than minor 19th century ones!

You just have to listen very carefully to the balance between melody and accompaniment, and keep the latter 'down'. Also watch the shape of the phrases and make sure there are no sudden accents.
