With strong influences from foreign powers and huge contingents of tourists, traditionally in Malta the role of women has been to stay at home and take care of children or the elderly, and live supported by their husbands. It is still unusual for a woman to be financially independent in much of Maltese society.

In the images that you will probably see, many of the women that appear are tourists or foreigners who come for a period to work or study in Malta, who occupy the leisure and socialization spaces to a greater extent than the local ones.
But the reality is that Maltese women live a different life than her visitors. The labor gap between the sexes is the largest in the European Union: around 60% of women are unemployed. The government has tried to address the issue, introducing numerous work incentives for women, such as tax breaks for married women over 40 who return to work and free childcare centers.
