To all those complaining that people are playing in a background, well, Guthrie is a guitar teacher at many colleges across the UK (ACM in Guildford for one). This is a class he is teaching to his students ffs, not a concert. The whole point of this lesson is for his students to bring their guitar and learn.

Wow, I've been playing 23 years, and here Guthrie lets on to such a simple concept--bending down instead of up for an easier vibrato--that works brilliantly and that I never thought about before. Amazing!

I've taught classes like this and sometimes (not all the time of course) you want the students too be trying out things in the moment. It can help them to assimilate what you're saying and they'll come up with questions then and there that might not otherwise arise. I'm sure they didn't play the entire time.
@TheRealrocker7411 жыл бұрын
I have one of those! Fixed Bridge ftw

once he notices the class isn't going to be quiet while he's teaching he just starts improvising over them lol

lol, Eleanor Rigby at 2:27, pure awesomeness.
@lewisbirkett44286 жыл бұрын
hm that is interesting I had been bending towards the lower strings on the top 3 and towards the higher strings on the lower because I was told that way was right but this does sound better
@JadeTigerKungFu12 жыл бұрын
He uses it to refer to a guitar with 22 frets as apposed to 24. In the 80's 24 fret guitars were popular with kids (teens) who wanted to shred.

Guthrie is definitely one of the best guitarists out there, he needs more recognition. Plus I wish these guys weren't so rude and stopped playing when he's talking :P

It's just an awesome little joke of his because he's good enough to play the second octave on a 21 fret guitar via bends and harmonics.
@thegreatgarry14 жыл бұрын
i wish i could be there....
@fishstik14 жыл бұрын
cuz it makes it easy to reach that octave. it takes a grownup to bend the string from the 22nd or 21st fret to the 24th

@crankycactus Oddly enough, I always thought the Ferrari and its permutations reflected an intelligent design.... Anyhoo, Guthrie's obviously a wonderful teacher, in addition to being the most insanely gifted guitarist to whom I've ever been exposed. I'd love to pick (as it were) his brain for an hour or so.

He is amazing in all he does. He bends so well. At times he sounds like he could save the Allman Brothers by replacing Warren, and Derek. He would be the whole show, and carry them onto greater horizons. Dickey Bettes..where the Hell are ya!!!

i'd give my right arm to be able to play like guthrie. if i did, i would'nt be though (ha ha...). still... left arm would go towards robben ford just for sheer tastyness. and i'd split up both of my legs between pat metheny and john scofield. well, that didn't sound right, but you know what i mean. sigh... so many great players out there, closing in on the millions it seems , a pity cou can't listen to 'em all right at the same time (even THOSE guys couldn't make THAT sound like music, i guess).

@gatluva I was in Guthrie's '07 Guitar Breaks class. All I can say is that he's a good lecturer and a great demonstrator, but he throws so much stuff at you so fast that it leaves you baffled. While great at showing you what is *possible*, you need something like a 1 hour session with Neville to unpack 5min Gurthrie demo. Neville encourages his students to try things out along with him (unplugged). Guthrie's a guru, but Neville's a real teacher.

For some players they get too good. The technique is amazing and he's one of the world's best technical guitarists but making a song everyone loves? You have to keep it simple to a certain extent, for me it's all about the music.
@Aervil8 жыл бұрын
I dont have any doubts its all about the music for Guthrie Govan either., I think when you've studied and listened to all the different genres, and know them quite well, if not mastered them, your own musical taste starts to break out and become something very unique and very odd for most people., Since most people only hear mainstream music that everybody else listens to, thats what they're ears are used to listening to, thats what they can relate too. A person who's listened through decades of music aswell as studied it isn't really in the same ballpark as a person who's listened to the radio his/her whole life.. They're really in separate dimensions of the artform.. not better or worse than eachother, just very different. Its not that they get too good at playing guitar, its they're musical taste that evolves really. With that said, I dont really care much for guthries music either, i just find him kind of fascinating from a guitarist point of view!
