There ARE no wrong notes,the key is when playing a phrase listen to the note you END on.If you're on a note that would sound sour,if you just go up or down a half step you'll be on a harmonically pleasing note.Try it,it works.

@Johaneeeek i saw this video from vitor wooten saying "you're never gonna be more than 1/2 step from the right note"... I feel thats just what Guthrie does.... but the techniques that he apply + creativity makes those "outside" notes sound so good :P

@creation23 If you are referring to Neville, that is funny, because he is a very respected teacher of music, and the guitar... He may not be able to play as well, but he knows his shit... Its just like a coach not being able to actually play the sport, but can make a team do amazing things. Both are needed.
@DanielGodoy913 жыл бұрын
@Johaneeeek He plays since he was 3 years old. His ears, his brain and his fingers function at the same level.

@tastefulphrasing who has written better, more musical and impactful melodies? Who is an iconic figure with more appeal than just to guitar nerds? Who understands how to better tug at people's souls?

How does he know to go from major to minor while soloing. how does he know that one note makes it a minor. is it just one fret less
@MCalla-jw8vh6 жыл бұрын
That's dorian... to go from major to natural minor, you also have to flatten the 6th. To go from major to harmonic minor, you flatten the 6th and the 3rd, but keep the 7th major. To go from major to melodic minor, just flatten the 3rd (if you're in a classical context, you do the natural minor scale when you descend in melodic minor)

@tastefulphrasing That's probably because they don't like jazz, it's your opinion that you don't like him. That doesn't take away the fact that what he did with GNR was huge.. they conquered the fucking world. You say he's horrible yet he's collectively sold over 100 million albums and your bashing him?? What have you done with your guitar playing career?
@Johaneeeek14 жыл бұрын
how does guthrie always land on the right notes!
@JohnLloydDavis2 жыл бұрын
He doesn't, the notes move themselves so they are underneath his fingers.
@smashingpoop13 жыл бұрын
does he just use the notes in the major/ minor scales? or is he doing chromatic stuff? because it sounds so special

@tastefulphrasing You're not seeing the truth. Whilst learning music theory helps people explore their instrument, it is not the only way to attain musical greatness. At the end of the day, music is about what we hear, you don't have to know music theory to appreciate sound, you just have to use your ears. Music theory is a tool to get you where you want to be, it is not the end goal in itself.

That guy talking about if you don't know this, talking about theory.. that's funny seeing as some of the greatest guitar players ever to walk this earth knew nothing about theory. Hendrix, SRV, Slash, Jeff Beck, Keith Richards..
@sasgayable3 жыл бұрын
they understood it implicitly, through grace. for mere mortals we need to try and consciously understand it.
@RohannvanRensburg Жыл бұрын
I don't buy that. When people like SRV or Beck say they "don't understand theory" they mean they don't understand complex jazz harmony, memorize a boatload of scales, etc. They still play pentatonic and other scales, they still know the difference between major and minor, and they likely know how different modes and scales feel and what notes you land on to emphasize that. The difference is directionality. Theory is descriptive, not prescriptive.

He's like all true guitarists... put a guitar in his hands and he plays, he just can't help himself, hahaha

@morkus26 Cool story bro. I'm sure studying jazz is an excellent thing for creativity. But if someone says " somehow Gurhtie knows how to hit the right note :) " and you answer " that is because he studied jazz". It's not that simple, he started in blues rock, went through times of shredding on an RG, and then jazz. Its not just jazz you narrow minded, stubborn person.

If you were a musician you'd stop bashing other musicians and get on with the music/practice.
@freaknbigpanda13 жыл бұрын
@tastefulphrasing Well what the hell do you even mean away from GNR, you mean the biggest part of someones career you just dismiss that? That was fucking way better then just watching any guitar virtuoso play. You base guitar players just on how technical they play? You really need to broaden your taste for what makes music not just how much someone knows about music theory and how they can apply it to the guitar. Making music has nothing to do with how much you know, it's what you feel.
@FSMusic8612 жыл бұрын
Yes, but many jazz/fusion players including Guthrie didn't learn theory as well. It's all about developing a good ear. Many great players learned the sound of scales and chords by transcribing and improvising. My problem with Slash is, that (for a musicians ear) he always sounds the same... the same pentatonic stuff and the sloppy playing. He obviously don't like the guitar as much as chicks, alcohol and drugs. You know, TASTE CHANGES WITH YOUR EARS.
@freaknbigpanda12 жыл бұрын
No I don't consider you a musician, because you are clearly not even on the same realm of playing as any of those guys so the fact that you say Slash sucks and he has millions of followers shows your ignorance. But you go ahead and keep bashing players and see how far it gets you.
@FSMusic8612 жыл бұрын
You can't be a musician and at the same time don't like jazz. You know, as I said before: Taste changes with the development of your ear. And a good ear always leads you to more sophisticated stuff like jazz. A real musician never wants to quit learning his ears are always curious about new sounds. Slash didn't dedicate his life to music, therefor he is not a musician to me. And I don't talk about knowing theory and bla bla bla. I talk about the music that is in someones head
@tastefulphrasing13 жыл бұрын
I would like to see him play anything from Guthrie, Dream Theater, Gambale, Bach, Emmanuel etc. He cant because he is not skilled enough.... He alone with the guitar, WITHOUT HIS BAND, there is not much talent there...
@FSMusic8612 жыл бұрын
Because theory alone doesn't make you a good musician. You first need to know the sound of an the emotional character of scales/notes/chords...
@FSMusic8612 жыл бұрын
Popularity NEVER was a reason of being a good musician.
@creation2313 жыл бұрын
Bahahaha how would you feel, Guthrie is sitting next to you just lazily playing amazingly, and you're the other instructor whois made to just play chords.. which Guthrie doesn't even need. Demorilizing.
@FSMusic8612 жыл бұрын
And yes I listen to a lot of blues, too. I have no problem woth playing pentatonic stuff. It just have to be creative like for example Robben Ford or SRV etc... But Slash's solos always sound the same and his sound is shit and he plays woth soo much gain that he never develop a sense of dynamic and so on. I couls list 20 more arguments why he is overrated but I think you get my point
@Chris74111313 жыл бұрын
@tastefulphrasing Neville is a pretty ok guitarist, pretty average. The reason he made a name for himself is he used his Editorship at Guitarist Magazine to further himself.."Respeceted" by the likes of you who probably cant play very well maybe, but not by real guitarists that has put in the practise and reached a decent level. By the way, playing guitar is not a team based effort, but a really personal and individualistic pursuit. Your "coach" bla bla bla just seems ridiculous.
@tastefulphrasing13 жыл бұрын
@freaknbigpanda Im sorry, but PLEASE dont say that Slash, and Keith Richards are among the greats. Slash as a guitarist, away from guns n roses, is HORRIBLE, same with Keith. They could not improvise a jazz progression to save their life.... Hendrix , SRV, Jeff Beck, actually have a unique style.....
@FSMusic8612 жыл бұрын
I tried to be argumentative... but you are obviously a 14 year old.... I don't need to prove myself. You know I'm a musician and a real musician is aware of his abilities and is humble enough to NOT show off. But your comment is a cliche one... if you can't come up with some arguments then this conversation is pointless.... And yes i watched the video you wanted me to see... and my opinion stays the same. On the other side I can show you a lot of Slash videos where his playing is shit.
