Hang tough! Science tells us that after 28 days away from a habit/routine, it is broken. I quit smoking cold turkey 38 years ago and haven't looked back since (except in my nightmares, literally!) . So glad I did. Literally can't stand a whiff of that stuff. After 40 days or so?....Congratulations, you have already done it! My next habit will be picking up my guitar after nearly as many years away from smoking, and learn to play guitar like you do. Thanks for your love of teaching, and the inspiration. God bless you!

Guthrie Trapp inspiring on many levels Guthrie. I took the challenge from my son not to drink until his broken toe healed and I have to say I’m bloody enjoying the clear head every day and extra quality time to focus on what is important... like learning some of your awesome licks! Keep up the awesome work man.

Clear headedness really is nice. After radiation therapy for throat cancer, my doc suggested no alcohol and it was just the ticket. Sense of taste eventually came back. After a couple years it was much easier to have two beers/week instead of several more/night.

I've been 2.5 years dry now. Believe me, I never thought I would say that! ;-) . Nor did I ever think I would enjoy it, but it really does simplify life so much and allows you the time, space and attention to really look at and enjoy things. It doesn't bother me ever that others drink-good for them-and I'm no puritan. I just enjoy for now being dry.

@@guthrietrappmusic yeah I get that. I personally drink very occasionally, maybe once a month or so, and very reasonably. After some time partying, it felt good cutting down on excesses. Like when I dropped junk food altogether, I suddenly had a lot more energy... Never really had any addiction but bad habits. Now I'm addicted to good things. Music, motorcycling, cooking, and I'm looking to add more physical exercise to the list as soon as I can. It's crazy how much more focus you can get when you have healthy addictions. Obviously you don't have that problem or you wouldn't be the monster player you are. The kind I aspire to be.

I had to ask for help from the Holy Spirit to quit drinking, because I could NOT do it by myself. Planned to quit on June 30, but drank on July 1st anyways, so I prayed for help that night, and the next day my compulsion to drink was gone completely, and hasn't come back since. Unlike you, I'm not taking a break, because if I drink again, even one, the addiction will be activated again. Flying home to Portland the airline offered free brews. including Lush IPA (Freemont brewing Seattle), one of my favorites, but I asked for green tea instead. Every time I start drinking again by just having ONE. I've never seen alcohol help anybody in any way, it just makes people stupid in most cases. I still use medicinal cannabis, but that's medicine, not poison like alcohol. Not to lecture anybody here, but alcohol changes my personality for the worse every time. After a lifetime of opioid addiction, I can't drink without becoming addicted, because it effects the same part of your brain. Enough about that. I just love the tone, touch, and musical sense Guthrie has, and look forward to watching other videos of his, he being new to me (heard the name many times).......! I'm curious how you would compare the Princeton Reverb with the 12" speaker to the Deluxe Reverb sitting next to it...>? My home amp is a 1959 Gibson GA-18T with a 10" Weber 10F150 (C10N copy), and 1960 GA-20T, since I couldn't afford the Fender tweeds, but I'm planning to acquire a Fender Princeton or Deluxe, which is why I ask the question. Thanks for your informative videos, and wonderful musicianship Maestro Guthrie!

@@pharmerdavid1432 glad you found a way to get better. When things start with opioid addiction they rarely end well. To my European mind it seems insane that these things are not regulated more strictly in the US. Anyway, I'm happy for you. Stay strong.

I for one don't care about how fancy the video is. It's the content that counts. Good information here! I keep toning everything down and sounding better. I want my guitar to be in the mix, not drowning it out. Also less bass could be good in a recording as bass adds up. I used to thing everything had to be turned way up. Thanks for the video!

I’ll email you direct with my story! I can’t believe it’s happened for me, but you, Brett Pappa and Erich Mackie are so inspirational to my playing and music journey. You're so on point regarding how hard you pick. I think Eric Johnson was pointing out in his first video, that a hard attack actually diminishes sustain. I slowly swallowed my pride, and started to change my picking many years ago. I was afraid I would loose energy in expression and the physical sensation. I took some get used to, and I continually monitor my right now, and it sounds much better, there's no going back :-)

So true. It's also helpful in a huge way dynamically. If you're always playing hard, you can't add anything, all you can do is bring things down from there. A dynamic player (Eric Jonson is a great example, I agree), find a good sounding medium like Guthrie says. Then you give yourself the room to be dynamic. Same goes for speed and complexity.

Greetings from Canada Guthrie! Thank you very much for your insights on guitar and tone, so great to have a real pro share with us. I have always used Fender amps on my gigs, just never got into the Marshall/Vox thing plus I am a Strat guy who uses those Jazz III picks. Regarding the booze thing, keep up the good work! It is so easy in this biz to slip into that....one each set to stay loose and don't make a fool of yourself then more just to wind down and sleep after the excitement of the gig. It is so easy to slip into "more"...Joe Bonamassa has stopped drinking FYI. I have gigged for 40 years so I know what you are dealing with. All the best.

Hi Guthrie, I love coffee too! Digging on that Russ Pahl Tele, and last but not least great lesson on tone. The two great take aways for me were not hitting the strings to hard so the instrument chokes out, and pulling the tone out of the instrument. Thanks for all you do, can't wait for the next one.

Your tone is incredible. Thank you so much for this tutorial. I've been playing guitar for more than 30 years & I still struggle with getting the tone that I want. I realize from this video that I've had my bass/mid/treble controls up too high, as I was using my eyes instead of my ears. Great advice & thanks again.

Fantastic. Beautiful playing. I feel like my settings have been justified now by knowing yours. I play low output humbuckers through a 1966 50 watt Fender Bassman with 1x15 Peavey cab. It sounds good with my volume on 3, treble on 6, bass on 3.

It looks Ike you run the front pickup set pretty low on the Tele. It sounds great. I like your comments about volume at home. In addition to my 66 DR and the Concert, I keep a Blues Jr plugged in at home. I like the separate master volume. I like your comments about not setting the volume with pedals. This a great series. I can see myself coming back to this over and over.

One of the many important take-aways that took me years to come to terms with: tune your amp to the room. Location affects your tone. You can spend years dialing it in perfectly at home, but those perfect settings probably won't work for you consistently; our gear simply sounds different in different environments. Adjust knobs accordingly to create the tone you want no matter where you are. Different voltages can also make a big difference in your tone and amp response. Some venues push as much as 128v (not good!) which can make your amp sound harsh, loud, and gritty. You'll have to back off the volume to try to counteract this effect. Some venues have weak power (115v or so) which makes your amp squishy and quieter. Always use your ears and not knob recipes to guide your tone as best you can despite the challenges of different environments.

P1 and 2 were very informative. Great vids! I'm surprised to learn you don't use the volume knob more. Especially when u got the OD pedals engaged but want just a touch less. You can probably grab a zoom q2n for like $100 or something if you wanted to get another angle in the videos. The battery life on em stinks (40min on two AA) but if you plug.em into the wall theyre fine. Frees up your phone for selfies!

Once again, beautiful tone! John Mayer put out a couple of videos on his Iphone and they are similarly informative and inspirational. When you are pro, you don't need high end gear to sound great. It densest hurt mind you, but the benefit you're gonna get from a $3,000 boutique amp and a $4,000 PRS guitar isn't nearly as much as some punter who's all thumbs. These tone lessons are great because you are educating people with such equipment and massive pedal boards to use some restraint, and to focus on their playing instead of their gear. I couldn't agree more. Another tip that helped me get up to speed on electric guitar is to spend the first couple of years playing an ACOUSTIC guitar, and focusing on rhythm playing. In my opinion, that's how you earn the right to plug in to an amplifier with an electric. Nothing develops your ear better than an acoustic instrument. Same goes for timing - which would be an awesome topic for a video series. It doenst matter how good your tone is if your timing sucks, lol....
