I contacted Guy by email 7 yrs ago, I had an old ring with an inscription on it that looked Roman. He freely replied after 2 weeks with a two page explanation. What a lovely helpful man. I treasure that email, thanks Guy.

I always loved Guy's quiet and appropriate excitement. When Guy was excited, it was real.

I remember Greenwich when the inscribed Roman stone was discovered. Guy running around shouting 'Who found this' and 'Do you know how rare this is' so that the digger who found it received the proper credit. Top bloke.

Love Guy's impersonations of Mick and Phil. And I also appreciate the fact he realises that he's been free to say and do what he does because he is an independent scholar, unconstrained by the dictates of a university position.

I could listen to this man for hours and hours! I just love Roman sites and his ability to express his excitement making you excited too! Marvelous! Love Time Team and so glad its coming back! Please Please bring Guy along, he is simply fantastic!

My favorite episodes included Guy, Stewart, and/or Helen. They loved to share their knowledge and they were so articulate. They still are!

I always enjoyed Guy’s appearances on TT because he had such a calm, natural and lucid manner about him. Indeed, not everyone is cut out for TV work and the show did occasionally feature guest experts who betrayed a certain awkwardness in front of the camera! Helen Geake was another team member who exuded a similar cheery, natural persona. Conveying facts and insight is one thing but doing so in a clear, convivial manner is so important!

Guy used to write expert technical features for a classic motorcycle magazine I used to work for.. I had no idea he was a historian until he popped up on Time Team. A talented and knowledgeable chap.

Really enjoyed this episode with Guy so thank you Tim and Guy. Time Team was such an important part of my week in the 90's and into the 2000's, I remember watching each episode wishing I was part of the digs and many years later I eventually applied to do a history degree at my local university as a 'mature student'. Unfortunately the admissions tutor wasn't as keen on me studying history at his school as I was :-) Never really understood why but he made the excuse that he didn't think I would be up to the minimum required level of intellect etc. I had spent the previous 21 years making my way from semi-employed hod carrier/factory worker barely able to read or write to completing a foundation degree in computer networks the year before our meeting. So I met with the law school admissions tutor as my second option a few weeks later and went on to gain my law degree with honours and a major law school competition win to boot. Now I'm in the middle of my doctorate in sociology, but I still wonder if that admissions tutor would let someone like me in even now as a history undergrad!? :-)

Time Team, with its wonderful crew, was such a great show and brought archaeology into so many peoples' awareness. Guy was always a great addition to any of the shows. I picked up a book recently at our local recycle about the correspondence of Samuel Pepys and what a pleasant surprise to see it was edited by Guy. He is amazingly versatile.

As a Latin and Roman student in university back in the early 1990s, but also as a young man who really wanted to know much more about the earlier humans, I thought when watching the older Time Teams that this guy named Guy seemed so arrogant and all-knowing in regards to the Roman, and the Iron age. But, when you look closely, he is always an attentive listener to anything anyone is saying and taking it all in. Guy is a quick thinker who listens to ideas of others in the context of the situation and very quickly analyzes what is being said and what it means in the accepted context of historical understanding at the time. So, Guy is a great listener, and an excellent analyzer of information if nothing else. He is also a great questioner. He's obviously extremely intelligent and inquisitive and runs with any information he can gather. This is how he is able to discover accurate new meanings in the archaeology with a rapid fastidiousness and express his quick analysis in a terse and accurate examination of the facts.

Consummate broadcaster, thank you Guy

What a marvelous exchange between two people who have enriched our lives immeasurably! I am especially impressed by the winsome and winning humility of Guy de la Bédoyère. The more one learns, it seems, the more painfully aware he becomes that he enjoys an infinitesimally small purchase on the known. Guy, for all his formidable expertise, embodies that academic virtue to perfection.

Guy is so smart! His knowledge of the Roman's is second to none! And that was one of my favorite episodes of Time Team Roman digs! That scripture was rare and funny that the guy who found it put it in the finds tray lol. Guy, I hope to see you in one of the new Time Team episodes! Cheers from Kentucky!

When I first saw him on TT I thought he was a bit toffee nosed, but as the years went by my opinion changed mainly because I could see how excited he would get at times. My DNA has been reported as approximately 50% from the UK. My earliest documented forbearers arrived in America when it was still the colonies, and they in fact fought with General Washington in the American Revolution. My last ancestor arrived from Britain in 1834. I watched all of the Time Team seasons and specials; very interesting and educational, but UK and American archeology were separate in my mind until Mr. de la Bedoyere's last comment about King Edward III. As mid-century American as I am, I suppose I too am descended from the line of King Edward III. I too, am connected to the archeology I'm watching with Time Team. I hope I get to see more and I am enjoying the vlogs with a new appreciation of "our" history. Thank you,

When I researched my family tree I found that I could get nowhere unless I understood exactly what was happening in the history of the time. Not only that but I had to understand the culture and social setup of the people in the area. This was a great eye opener. My ancestors along with the other citizens were making history. Even though kings and queens were an important part of the historical equation our ancestors were just as important. I loved Time Team because as my paternal ancestors were in England and traceable for at least 900 years the series opened up locked knowledge of how the cultures operated through various era's. It gave me a heightened sense of identity.

Bravo!! Guy is wonderful to hear expound on everything historical.

My fav of Guy is the scene at the end of one episode where he scolds everyone about being pompous, and posits future archeologists cursing them for technology they can’t use and aligning everything to a satellite that has since burnt up. Please feel free, anyone, to add which episode that is--I’ve got a wicked headache today, and I’m listening to this as I knit, to take my mind off the headache. I had to comment, though. I’m not a fan of much that is Roman, really, but Guy always included architecture, public water management, and things that help me articulate how behind, even Roman times, US infrastructure currently is. (They had better pothole management than most 21st century cities.)

Guy's comment on Edward III reminded me of a genealogy book I read many, MANY moons ago, in which the author described Edward III as a 'genealogical Clapham Junction'. i've always loved that analogy.

Guy always is enthusiastic and shows such an excitement for his work that you find it easy to listen to him. I feel like a wide eyes child listening to an amazing story which makes them want to play the historical characters and add your own scenes to the drama.

Like so many I have read in comments of TT I came across TT during Covid. Unlike many I didn't know it existed before that because I live in Canada. Going through all of them over the last 2 years Guy became my favourite expert. I love his passion, his knowledge and his willingness to politely contradict the TT regulars when he saw them wrong. His personality always came out during the shows.

...and if Guy steps out of his house one day and finds his lawn has vanished, he'll know why :D. Excellent interview and reminiscence, thank you both.

I think Guy hit on an important point. Time Team wasn't just about the archeology. A huge part of its popularity was the interection between the team members, and the fact that the team members were interesting people themselves. Great to see Guy again. He was one of my favourite irregulars along with Prof. Mark Horton.

I have ALWAYS loved to hear Guy talk ..i eve follow his Personal channel to listen to w/e it is he has to talk about . Very interesting man .I think my favorite episode was when they dug near a school that Guy's Children started to attend and the teacher was the one that told Guy about the Roman stuff there ,, then they Dug it . Made them all seem more like the Average person and Not some suit , but a real person you Know you could meet in pub and have a great convo with Cheers .

I used to take coins from the time of Marc Antony all the way through to George III into my engineering design high school class to highlight both the similarities and the changes that occurred over 1800 years. I loved the reactions of some of them as I connected certain coins to historical events and talked about the state of technology and manufacturing and society through that time. The coins in their hands made a very real connection to the past for them. I'm two years older than Guy and coincidentally retired from teaching just two years ago. I do miss working with those bright young minds.

This just made my week! I love every thing about Time Team. The idea of another episode or two is delightful. Thank you for all of this

Brilliant conversation with a very realistic attitude towards historical objects and teaching. As a historian myself, I very much recognise the effect on students of using actual historical objects in the classroom. When I was 10 I found a denarius of Antoninus Pius on Tadworth Common. It's in a museum in Ashtead, Surrey now. Wow, that was 62 years ago!

Guy was the beat. I loved his episodes. Considering he's a Roman specialist, it's absolutely fascinating that his most memorable episode had nothing to do with Romans.

Guy has the right idea. The past should never be left in a box hidden from view. Perhaps in these days of internet those millions of objects should be photographed catalogued and put online for the world to see and learn from not just for those few academics with access but for all those interested. But above all the opportunity for those inclined to research the subject for themselves and add to our understanding with fresh eyes and differing perspectives.

Never seen an episode before I ran across it on youtube. What a series, as usual we only have 3 days to...just great stuff. Thank you posting them. I love history.

Always a joy to hear Guy

My best memory of Guy is when he's describing a group of "self satisfied archeologists" talking about a group of finds that might have been all donated to the site where they were found. "When the old gent's popped his clogs and nobody knows where any of this stuff has come from." Good stuff indeed.

Nice to learn some new things about Guy. I re-watch TT regularly, but usually skip the Roman digs. I've never been keen on the Romans. One thing I could relate to is going down the rabbit hole when I want to learn something and pleasantly surprised to learn a whole bunch of somethings. I'm sure if he rang a few TT pals they might be able to help him figure out what's going on with his house or better yet maybe they'll watch this and ring him up.

Looking forward to seeing Guy on the Time Team reboot. His appearances and contributions were always valuable and Sir T’s jealousy of him, so much so that he would mispronounce Guy’s name made me shake my head in disbelief. Thank you Tim for featuring Guy!

I wonder if Time Team and Guy could do a "Special" on the search and recovery of the Short Stirling bomber from the Zuyder Zee in the Netherlands. Always though he was one of the best historians they had on the program.

Total respect for this man, always amazed by his knowledge. I wonder what he would've made of the site I worked on in 1976 at a place called Orsett, in Essex, under the supervision of Hugh Toller.
