Ride the King Alfred's Way, Time Travel Gravel bike route with Guy Kesteven - writer of the official Cycling UK guidebook - as your expert narrator and animator. Part 1 runs from Winchester to the Ridgeway through 10,000 years of English history including the iconic sites of Stonehenge and Avebury. Part of a 3 day recce ride ahead of the launch of this the fantastically varied and stunningly beautiful 350km route.
shop.cyclinguk.org/king-alfre...
Thanks to Kieran Foster and the team at Cycling UK for creating this fantastic route and involving me in the project, SRAM for the loan of the bike, Zyro Fisher for Altura and Gore as well as Wahoo, Red Bull Spect and 7 Mesh for gear.
Any questions fire away or head for the Cycling UK managed King Alfred's Way group on Facebook.
Cheers
Guy

Unsure if the UK Eurovelo route is in your neck of the woods as there is very little info for the UK route (typical ). Hopefully there is a bit of history on there.

Completed the entire route this last June weekend. 3 nights camping in pre-booked campsites. Did on a Vitus Gravel bike with full bike packing bags (Ortleib). 22 hours of ride time. Very hard work. A lot of overgrown tracks where stinging nettles were the main challenge (wore arm warmers for protection!). The ruts were a nightmare. Came off at slow speed a few times as wheel came out of the rut. Gravel military road on Salisbury Plain was amazing - flat wide, not rutted and very fast. Awesome. Overall a very hard but thoroughly enjoyable trip.

We did it last year, the weather had been very wet in the previous weeks so the going was really tough and very slippery interspersed with deep water filled ruts, some areas were like full on MTB sections, As we were traveling with our luggage for a week it was tough going. So the going is very dependent on rain, if it's raining give it a miss unless you're only doing small sections

Well for those who can't do impressions of Naval hardware, don't own zipp wheels and may not have as much experience of riding off road as you and I, If there's one way to upset a walker is to go past without warning or yelling at them. I have a bell on all my mountain bikes except my Bronson and at least 90 % of people (not wearing head phones) I warn of my near presence (50 metres away) thank me or say hello as I ride past at a sedate pace. Hi Mick, I used a Wahoo Roam. The breadcrumb directions work great. The only bit it struggled was in Reading where there are some weird superimposed loops on a really small scale where the bike path goes under a bridge and then loops back over the top and it can't quite zoom in far enough. I had the OS maps app on my phone as a back up which was handy to get the overview for those sections but barely used it otherwise apart from checking I hadn't missed too many landmarks etc.

Russ had a 625Whr battery on his Cannondale too and he got about 80km out of it in Eco I think. He'd ridden out from Heytesbury from Salisbury to meet me and then came all the way across Salisbury Plain and then turned back. I normally get around 50-60km on an EMTB if I'm being reasonably careful with power usage so I'd expect to have to recharge at lunchtime if you're running a 3 day schedule similar to mine. It obviously depends on the time of year but definitely something with a bit more tread and toughness than normal. I rode it on Zipp G40 but Specialized Rhombus, Pirelli Cinturato Gravel M, Schwalbe G-One bite, Halo gravel and WTB Nano are all good 'fit and forget' all weather all rounders. rather more road than I was expecting. I was under the impression that this was an off-road route. I guess that some road is unavoidable to join everything up.

tree267 have you looked at the GPX file on the Cycling UK site? It’s very definitely an off road route - particularly on the 1st and 3rd days if you split it like I did. Some joining sections on road are like you say inevitable, but Kieran the route planner/negotiator has kept them to a minimum.

The best place to find up to date advice on stops, current trail conditions etc, is the official King Alfreds Way Facebook page 👍The community there has created some excellent maps of stopovers and services too.

If only people would please remember we use Miles not Km, for roads and routers in the UK just like the USA does.

I appreciate the effort to make a video... but what a lot of hot hair commentary. Shouting over noise and all you see is this guy knees popping up and his arms framing same, same shots!? Seems unedited, mindless... like going for a ride with a boring mat that never shits up LOL.
