I decided it was time to compare GW Shades to Army Painter Washes. Both ranges have been revamped in the last couple of years and I hope this serves as a useful guide to what the differences are. I tested Agrax Earthshade, Seraphim Sepia, Nuln Oil and Targor Rageshade, along with diluted versions using Lahmian Medium mixed 1:1. You can see how they line up against Army Painter Strong Tone, Sepia Tone, Light Tone, Soft Tone, Dark Tone, as well as Rust Tone, in both neat and diluted forms (using Army Painter Wash Medium 1:1).
Overall, I think GW Shades make the recesses darker but also tint the original base colours more than Army Painter washes. Let me know what you think!

I'd go for Strong Tone with or without medium as the overall winner there.

Strong Tone is a great all-rounder. Adding some medium is my preference.

Though I am a confirmed tight-wad and just use brown ink and Flash floor polish (which comes out the same for a fraction of the price) 🙂

Thanks very much. I'm glad I'm not the only one who wanted to see the difference between the ranges.

Strong tone's old formula used to be very viscous and had the pigment levels of a tint more than a wash. Strange change, Ill have to make some changed to my painting recipes. Great video.

Yeah, there's definitely a difference between old and new AP Washes. I did a video on them recently to show the changes. Overall a change for the best!

Would be great to see a comparison like that of AK and Vallejo washes. Thank you for sharing.

Maybe Vallejo one day. AK Interactive are not going to appear though. Using imagery from the Holocaust in an advertising campaign for a book was unconscionable.

This is a great video, when I have time I need to give it a proper watch. I’ve been experimenting with citadels new vs old formula verse Duncan Rhodes washes. I have a bottle of strong tone I’ve never really tried and didn’t realize they also changed their formula ? Lots to sift through, and it’s hard to pick a ‘best’ because they can be applied for different reasons to get different desired results. But some are better than others for each task! Thanks

Glad you like the video. There are loads of applications for the shades or washes, and while there probably is a "best" product for each job it's a lot of work to find it. I think that the filter effect that the GW shades gives could be very appropriate for dirtier finishes for example. I haven't handled any of the Two Thin Coats range yet so may need to look out for them myself.

@@CullodenPaintingStudio the Duncan washes are very nice imo, they’re most comparable to the original citadel washes in that they tint extremely well so give great bits of shadows to work with. Battle Mud Wash for example is the agrax earth shade equivalent and I prefer it to old citadel currently. It looks a bit murky on the palette, but I think is because it has a drop of matte medium in it because it dries so matte.

@@CullodenPaintingStudio I am keen to compare them to the army painter versions now haha. They were so much stronger than the new citadel washes that it made my new formula citadel washes seem like they had no pigmentation… they do flow nicely into recesses but when you need to stain or tint something the new citadels aren’t great at all for me, though I hear applying two coats gets a similar effect. I have the “old” dark tone I believe …so I guess I need to grab a bottle of the new one now.

Isn't the tiny bottle of "Wash Medium" really just a flow improver? I buy large bottles of artist flow improver for allot less than those tiny bottles.

A big bottle of flow improver probably does the job just as well. Thought testing the branded stuff was the most fair way of doing the test.
