In this week’s episode we’re kicking the tires on an Ironman Foam Cell Pro Lift kit. We’ll cover how the GX460’s suspension works, take a look at options for lifting it and talk about why we chose the Ironman 4x4 Foam Cell Pro lift kit for Rossie.

Enjoy the rig and thanks for the shout, Mate! Upper Control Arms will certainly help with the alignment and ensure you're back to proper suspension geometry.

This is my kind of humor. There were some gems delivered with the usual dead pan style. Good choice on the lift kit and the decision to do it yourself. This is what separates men and, er, men with less money than ambition! Looking forward to the part II.

Looking forward to the next part. I’ve got the front FCPs with HD springs sitting in my shop waiting to be installed on my 17 GX. I’ve got a Expedition One front bumper coming which is why i went heavy and why I’m waiting to install. Im not going to delete my rear bags though. I’m going to try the sensor spacer cheat first.

Great points! I pulled out my Radflo 2.5 adjustable coilovers on my GX470 a year ago to have Radflo rebuild them (drove there on a Disneyland trip). I definitely went way over 15k for rebuilds... I had Radflo rebuild them at 59,923 mi at a cost of $478.03 (with new shafts and shipping back) in September 2022. Nobody talks about how often you have to rebuild these... and the time it takes to take them out, put them back plus the downtime if it is a wife mobile (which was in my case). So my wife end up driving my old 4Runner for a couple of weeks. On the other hand, my 1999 4Runner also have 2.5" Radflo coilovers with over 105,000mi on them without rebuild. It was a much lighter vehicle (over 1000# lighter than the GX and 2000# lighter than the LX) and the 2.5" coilovers were way overbuilt for the 3rd gen 4Runner platform. I reinstalled the rebuild Radflo back on the GX and set the lift back to 0" because I wanted to get back more downtravel. Previously I had these set to 1.5". Either way, my 32" KO2 still clear the fenders but now I have more downtravel. I also own a LX570 which has hydraulic suspension and the reasons I chose it over the Land Cruiser 200 was because I didn't have to buy any aftermarket coilovers nor do I have to rebuild the coilovers every couple of years. I just change out the AHC fluid every 60,000 mi and the shocks/suspension get refreshed. Much easier than rebuilding the coilovers. I also don't rock crawl as much with the LX and leave that stuff for the old 4Runner. I do my own maintenance and actually prefer to work on the AHC than work on the KDSS (especially with the lean issue) since it is very easy to work on as long as you don't have rusted out hydraulic lines (that goes for both KDSS and AHC). Plus with AHC you get on demand flip of a switch +2" lift when you want it (+2.5" if you are really stuck) and automatic -1" lift on the highway for better fuel economy.

CJ in Socal… how is the height in the back since you used the 3 inch? Do you have an installed roof top tent and or another heavy add-ons? Is it a lot higher in the rear? Also did you have to do any additional mods such as a diff drop? Hope you can help
@CJinSoCal
@CJinSoCal Жыл бұрын
@@dannycruz2022 hi! no diff drop. the height in the back is not significantly higher than the front. the front and back rose equally higher. we don’t have a rough top tent but we have a metal tech rear bumper with swing out which is very heavy and brought the back down a tad. i would say we probably still have like a 1-2 inch rake with the back bumper. we just have a prinsu roof rack on top which is light. we’re planning on getting an ironman front bumper and winch soon so that will even out all the weight distribution. right now this lift is working great for us. we’ve taken it on quite a few trips, and with the back and top fully loaded its still even, no sagging. but in the future i think ill want to switch to the heaviest springs.. would’ve done that in the beginning but the heavy springs only go up to a 2.5 inch lift.. if you plan on getting a rtt, i would for sure recommend getting the heavy springs.

Rocked it factory for a couple years. Just cheaper to replace with a lift than replaced my cracked airbags that would just have to be replaced again in 5 years. If I had springs in the rear I wouldn’t have messed with it until they were sagged out.

Congrats on less scraping and more fuel consumption. Looking forward to part II. Wondering how you prevented dash lights and error codes with air spring delete. I did Bilsteins 6112s in front with 1.5” lift and tricked the rear air into another 1” lift with washers but haven’t dared to swap to coil springs yet for that reason.

I was worried too. Had a 5ohm resistor and wires ready to go. Anticlimactic. Did nothing. No warning lights errors, nothing. Didn’t even use washers. Im planning on removing the compressor at some point just to use the space but right now Im leaving sleeping dogs to lay.

Love your video! Looking forward to part 2. Btw, is you GX a base or a premium? If it is a premium, did you delete the rear air bag to install the lift? Cause I am thinking about buying a 2010-2013 GX premium but I am afraid the air suspension would not work with any lifts.

Love your videos bro. Lemme tell you about ma rig. I drive a Prado 2013 V6 which is exactly the same built as GX 460. Maybe GX is a V8. Recently i have installed a 2 inch suspension liftkit from Dobinsons. Now am planning to change my stock wheels to beadgrips. And stock tires 265/65/r17 to 265/70 all terrains. I mostly drive in soft sands so have to air down to 10 psi. Let's see how it would look and perform with Method beadgrips

Just on your point about spring technology at 7:23. There is a newer material for springs that some suspension spring manufacturers are now using called German X5K steel. X5K steel allows the coil to be lighter for the same spring rate as conventional SUP9 steel with the theoretical same durability but being lighter and has proven to be more responsive in the motocross/supercross field. I could be wrong but I don’t believe Ironman has switched to X5K steel yet as can probably be seen by the amount of coils and size of wire in their coils. Despite this, X5K springs probably have no real benefit in 4x4 vehicles (due to the many rubber mounts in chassis and suspension joints) other than being able to create a spring that is approx 30% lighter than SUP9. Just my 2cents

Sigh……good choice, I love and hate my king shocks for what you’ve mentioned. Especially in WA no one rebuilds them so I have to send them to CA smh. But I have kept my stock suspension so I can put them on when the kings are off, l like the iron man suspension that they are easier to rebuild than my king shocks.

Been a couple years. Around 25K miles. Still love it. No issues. Soaks up washboards, firm enough on the big hits but soft enough around town. Would do the same kit again. I’m even over the rake, I might have gone with the 3” instead of the 2.5” in front but it handles really well and I’d hate to have front end float on the freeway, so….🤷‍♂️

I enjoyed your video, however I’ve got to point out that springs are actually very complicated and there’s an awful lot of engineering going into them. This depends on the use cases of course - car suspension springs are of the lesser high-tech sort.

They ride great! I've had it all installed for two years now and have no complaints other than wishing I had gone with the 3" springs in front. On the trail, they're not as stiff as the 5100s I put in my wife's 3rd gen. On the street, they're firmer than stock, so the dive goes away, but when I sail over speed humps at 40 miles an hour, it's like they just disappear. I haven't noticed any shock fade on the trail. Probably 500-1000 trail miles on them now and 25K street miles, and no complaints. Would pick the same setup again except for taller springs in the front. Hope that helps!
