My experience was similar. Grew up in the 80's with a monthly subscription to MX action magazine, and a complete obsession with dirt bikes. I would beg my dad to take me to the dealer and I would take home those little fold-out Honda model line-up pamphlets and plaster them on my bedroom walls...lol. My parents flat out refused to buy me a dirt bike. When I was 12 I started collecting bottles along our rural road and eventually came up with $200 and purchased a used 1983 Kawi KD80 from a classmate. A couple years later I bought a beat rm80 and yz80 in boxes. Put together a frankenbike with the YZ chassis and the RM motor. Rode that a couple more years. Had a hiatus from riding for many years after that, but never lost the obsession. A career change to a more lucrative job in my late 30's let me pick up the sport again and I bought a used 2007 KTM 300 in 2013. Had a bike for everyone in my family for a time, but the kids never took an interest. Almost 50 now with a grandchild coming in a few months. Had my first gate drop ever in 2019...lol. My son and his wife have talked about putting their kids in moto. My wife of 25 years has taken up riding dirt bikes in the last two years and we ride MX together 2-3 days a week from April through October. Just sold my 2018 Husky 350 and picked up a 2022 KX450. Currently injured but hoping to rip that new Kawi in 11 more weeks...lol. Life is good!

@@chrisjamesbewley7683 funny , a friend of mines father bought him a bike , a nice used cr 80 '83, and I had a xr 80. He couldn't handle the power and I used to always dream of having a race bike but wasn't allowed due to noise and reliability. One day after we left the property riding another buddy told us to switch bikes and then it turned into a habit to the point my friend would leave his bike at my house and I would ride when my step dad was in camp working . Buddy who switched bikes brother signed me up for a local race in '84 and told me not to get hurt casue my mom didn't know I was there haha. I finished last but got the feel for it all. Didn't race again till '88 and did 893 motos over 7 years from Canada but always remember my first two motos .. thanks Dean for the swap 👌

(Skip to the middle of the story for another Racer-X legend name drop.) Jase looked so surprised that Jason didn't grow up riding, but often it's those who were denied that have the most passion!!! Like Jason, I grew up hooked on motocross. For me (being a little older) it was checking out the same five or six 1970s motocross books from my elementary school library for years. Later I saw my first Dirt Bike and Motocross Action magazines. I was hooked but my parents didn't have the time, money, or desire to get me into riding or racing. Eventually, they caved and I got a $300 dirtbike at age 12. I did my first race at age 14 and at 15, I earned enough money to buy a brand new Honda CR125! I continued to race casually as an adult and I eventually owned an AMA sanctioned motocross track for over a decade. But it wasn't my parents who took me to my first races. It was another future Racer-X journalist legend and moto historian, Eric Johnson!! Eric is the older brother of one of my best friends in high school. Like Jason, his parents never let him or his brother ride motocross. But Eric knew everything about motocross racing. At my second ever motocross race he pointed out a fellow 125 schoolboy racer and said, "That's Fred Andrews, he's going to be an AMA pro within a couple of years!" Fred Andrews started his lengthy pro career the next season at Hangtown. He took us to High Point to see our first-ever AMA Pro National and said "I'll see you guys later I want to go talk to Davey Coombs." We didn't know who Davey was. A year later he took us to Buffalo where we saw the supercross race ever at Rich Stadium. The High Point and Steel City Nationals became an annual affair for a group of mostly non-racing kids for the next few years before we all graduated high school and went our separate ways. We did this stuff on our own. None of our parents had anything to do with motocross. It was Eric who got a bunch of us hooked. He made motocross cool for a bunch of stick and ball sports kids. Most of our crew never even had a bike, but Eric made us all motocross fans. True passion is contagious!

I had a similar story- me and my brother weren't allowed to have any kind of motorcycle because my mom worked in Emergency Rooms and "saw all the injuries" so it wasn't until we went to a summer camp that had dirt bikes, and then when my brother was like a junior or senior in high school he bought a 125 off a friend and that's when we were able to just ride dirt bikes. But to this day I've never raced a dirt bike, and as an adult, I just have fun riding. But I've been obsessed with Moto my whole life.

Both my mom and dad grew up riding dirt bikes in the 60s and 70s. When I came along, at age 7, I asked if I could ride. They said no, they will never let me ride, and that I would have to wait until I was an adult and had moved out of the house first. So years later, I finally started riding at 29. The dream never goes away.

Jason I know the feeling. when I was a kid I was obsessed with motorcycles all my older brother's rode and I never had a bike I Used to push a Mini bike up a hill that didn't have a motor so I could ride it down.I watched everyone ride I was obsessed with motocross.saw my first supercross in Anaheim in 81 and many others finally got one when I was 15 it was a 74 husky and rode it until the paper boy had to have it.went about 15 years without a bike but rode some quads and occasionally a friends while camping or hanging out.all the while I followed motocross and outdoor Nationals and other forms or bike racing. So for a long time time from early 90's until 2006 no bike until I picked it up again YZ426, YZ450, WR450, kx500, cr500and now I'm going to Beta 300 RR With a garage full of them.jason dreams do come true.love your insight and connection to the sport.

You are amazing about the sport. You know what you’re talking about and great for the sport. Your commentary before sitting where you are now, was epic. You kept talking about the Florida super-cross coming up. I was listening and watching and smiling. If this guy keeps walking, he will walk all the way to Florida. I even mentioned that to you, and you comment back to me. That was cool. I felt the same for myself but didn’t have the money to have two bikes, so I sold mine so my Son could have one. He is living in Florida now and was playing on the tracks. He did sell his bike to help pay his rent till he gets a better job. But we both are still loving the sport and you guys bring the Canadian vibe (excitement in your voices )to America, listening to your surprises, as there are passes,jumps,turns. Even turn around from someone coming from last to first, I think James Stewart brought that out of the announcers and it stuck with the fans. We like that you guys are as amazed as we are as we sitting at home watching. The Gypsy Tales are cool as well getting updates and industry interviews. Still love listening to RC4 and JS7 excited about the events as well even James show he has a guy that does know exactly what it feels like to be out there. But you both don’t have to be a James Stewart or Ricky Carmichael to be sitting where you are just have to love the sport enough looks like you guys do, keep up the hard work, it seems like it pays off.

I'm 46 years old and owned dirt bikes in the late 80s. Got out of it because most people up here in Canada ride sleds so I did that all my life. As soon as Covid hit in 2020 everything was closed and all my kids sports were cancelled so I decided to get an bike. Picked up an old 07 crf450 , my oldest son an 85 and my younger twins a ktm 50 and KTM 65. Since that summer I'm obsessed. Never followed supercross or motocross ever but did like it. Now I know every rider in every class , most privateers and the mxgp guys. This is the craziest sport in the world and I have so much respect for these guys. I wore all MX gear riding that bike, putting in 82,000 kms over 4 years. I spend every spare moment watching anything I can on moto because I'm interested and I'm trying to fill in the knowledge gaps. I pre ordered the Stark Varg and hoping that bike can ease the transition into keeping up with other 450 dads who regularly invite me to ride. I wasnt exposed to MX at all growing up, but I'm glad I grew up snowboarding, surfing, mountain biking and doing other sports. Pandemic made a lot of kids into screen warriors, which is what lead my wife and I to go down this motocross journey. We camp in a tent at each weekend race and the kids absolutely love it. It's never too late in my opinion, but I do respect the die hard moto heads and scene.

I rode as a teen but my parents wouldn't support racing. They bought me a bike (89 cr125 back in 95) and gear to ride with my friends but I only raced a handful of times. My close friend raced 80s and 125s so I was always at the track with him. A few times his dad wanted to see what I could do and told me to get my stuff ready and they would take me with and cover gate costs. Needless to say it's a rude awakening going from trails to track at 15 years old with 0 previous experience on tracks. That 1st race in 125 beginners I pulled the holeshot and than immediately crashed going over the 1st double. This idea that you have to race to understand the sport and be a part of it is ridiculous.

Crazy Weege, I have a very similar story. Parents were terrified of me riding Moto, wouldn’t support having one etc. But I read about it in all the mags, knew all the riders and their history, dreamed of having an Mc Bell helmet or spitfire Kawi bike. I raced BMX and loved it, but it wasn’t moto. Bought my first dirt bike at 38. And have had 3 in 3 years, up grading as money allowed. If you have Moto in your blood, you will do whatever it takes to fulfill that dream. My fiancé has never ridden, doesn’t want to and will never understand. As for me, I’ll ride until I can’t. One of my friends has a son (in my videos on my page) he is a great dad we all wish we had. Gives his son killer advice on the track that gets him wins constantly, he works at a motorcycle shop but has never raced or jumped a day in his life, yet somehow talks the benefits of body position better than all the dads out there, and most of the racers. The truth is he probably didnt know at first, but when his son started doing well he started talking to Jimmy Lamastus (iykyk) and others OGs around here and found the best advice to give and his son is one of the fastest in our area. You dont have to be a racer, you have to know what information helps our sport and be able to communicate it.

In my opinión, Jason is one of the BEST things to happen to modern MX . His enthusiasum for the sport and knowledge is refreshing and in a world that is constant doom and Gloom accordding to the media, that optimistic attitude and love of the sport is first class. He even visited a local MX race in Maine during the Maine state championship or Vurb moto classic and went around the pit área interveiwing regular dudes that although are not profesionales might actually put more effort in a vet 40 B moto than say a guy like........( fill in the blank!) But a couple pro riders who have put in lack luster rides come to mind. We need more people involved in the sport like JW.

I hate that saying honestly, you can know alot about the sport without racing. Not to mention it is a very expensive hobby alone just as a weekend rider, not to mention the expenses to travel and race on a regular basis, the average person cant afford it. I've been riding since I was 3 years old and I'm 28 now and I've only had the privilege of racing once when I was 12. I would have given anything to continue racing and do it as a job because it's my passion, but some people just aren't as fortunate and after I left the military, now even close to my 30s I'm still working toward being able to afford to go racing again and even ride again. But I've idolized and been addicted to this sport for over 25 years and you can be a fan without racing. It's in my blood now matter whether I race or don't. Jason is a very respectable guy and he's been in this sport for a very long time and he's seen it all, he knows what he's talking about whether he races or not. Awesome interview as always 👌

3:04... I am a bit older than you Jason - so for me (No VCR's when I was pre-teen - no taping) - so I had to wait (and wait and wait and wait), for ABC's Wide World of Sports to broadcast the rare Moto-X race on TV... and Then I would be glued to it! ...grew up watching Roger D, Heikki M, Brad L, Joel R, Pierre K, Tony D, Bob H, Jimmy E, Marty T....... (on and on)...... on all the European bikes (CZ's, Husky's, Maico's, Bultaco's... and the early Suzuki's, Yamaha's, Honda Elsinore's, Can Am's)... What a great time to get into MX!!!... My parents would not let me race either...so I would go watch my friends race - (mostly at Southwick - close to my home) - So I started racing when I was in my 30's - in the Vet Novice class!!! Altho I did start riding dirt bikes at 12 - in the woods - with friends - WAY more dangerous than sanctioned racing!!...LOL...

My dad had the same inspiring advice as Weege's dad, nothing but negative. I didn't start racing till 21 when I got a decent job and i found a new family in moto. Still ride (occasionally race) at 50, parents never came to a race or even asked how I did on the weekend, back in the day. Oh well, not a big deal I guess.

My story is similar. My friends had bikes but my parents wouldn't let me ride. When I was 16 my Dad said I could buy a Street-legal Dualsport when I turned 18--to ride to school. Cars were not allowed because my Dad didn't want to be sued. In 1975 I bought a Honda MT250, which looked like the CR250--but was an underpowered, over geared slug. I rode that thing on Trails and raced guys on MX bikes trying to go Fast. It got all smashed up and I traded it in for a 1975 KX250 a year later. Been buying Bikes (lost count) ever since. I'm 65 and still race some MX and Cross-country events. I'll stop when I can't load the bike into the PU truck anymore! I never feel old when I'm riding a Dirt bike.

I was born in Hollywood and lived in” the valley” until I was 4. We then moved to Canyon Country. It was a one horse town back in the early 70’s. At 5 I got my first dirt bike. A Honda Z-50. When I mastered that and outgrew it I got a brand new XR-75 my dad hated 2 strokes. He said they were too loud. So I tore around on my XR and then outgrew it and then got a brand new XR-100 and rode the shit out it! When that bike finally was on its last leg I had a brand new Kenwood CD player and I traded it for a KX 80 and a YZ 80. Rode those for a while and then raced BMX. Dad wouldn’t let me race. In high school I met Willie Surratt. I’d go to his house and was amazed at how many bikes he had! He had like 4 race bikes and 2 practice bikes. All brand new Honda CR 125’s. I’d don a set of his gear, we were both the same size, grab one of his practice bikes and we’d go ride for hours! He used to make me jump some crazy step-up road jumps. If I said no he would say “ ok, we are going home” I didn’t wanna stop riding so I’d say ok. He would just tell me to put it in 4th gear and pin it and you will clear it no problem. He was always right. How many kids in high school ever got a chance to ride a Factory Honda CR-125? We ride by my house and go out in the hills and there would be Mike Keidrowski who I also went to school and graduated with riding, Mouse McCoy who was also one of my best friends out there riding as well. Larry Brooks would be out there. Mercedes Gonzalez who was the fastest woman out there riding. Bones would be out there dialing in guys suspension and he would ride as well. I stopped riding after high school for a few years, I’d gotten in some trouble and got locked up for a year, moved to San Diego and lived on the beach for a few years, moved to Hawaii, then Santa Cruz, Vegas for a little while, then ended up in NorCal. Seen how many tracks were up here and immediately got a YZ 250 two stroke. Had fun on that for years. I was the guy who refused to touch a four stroke! I thought two strokes were the shit! Then I had a friend who still raced in the A class, let me ride his YZ 450! Sold my 250 and bought a 2010 YZ 450F with fuel injection and that bike was the shit! So fast and handled like a dream. I loved riding tracks, and there were plenty up here. Now in almost 55 and have had a few off the bike injuries that pretty much ended my riding for fun career. Sold the bike and now I’m just a spectator. I’ve followed this sport since I was a kid. My first posters on the wall were of Brad Lackey and Chuck Sun. Went to my first SX when I was probably 8 or 9 so 1977 or 78. My dads best friend was vice president of Miller Beer and we always got vip tickets to all the SX and MX races. I also think Weege is one of the best commentators and knows more about SX and MX than just about anyone. RC is horrible in the booth! Weege and GL should be calling the outdoors and Weege and Blair should be calling SX. Just my opinion.

One problem, and it's huge, is the health care system in the USA. As a parent, it's stressful knowing that injuries can really hit a family financially, even bankrupt a family. That said, no need to live in a plastic bubble. Ride, but ride smart, with realistic expectations. Realize that being the local weekend hero is not worth getting seriously injured over. Unless you're the .05% of riders who actually have the skill, and MONEY to make it, ride with tomorrow in mind.
@Thefailcycle
@Thefailcycle 2 жыл бұрын
Just work somewhere with health care. Not that hard lol. Only problem is people getting free shit crowding up hospitals and surgery’s. There’s actually a lot of great riders at local tracks. Even older guys that are fast. You’re probably slow af and have that as a built excuse why you suck.
@Nanerdeath
@Nanerdeath 2 жыл бұрын
injuries are a part of literally any sport, if you're taking it seriously or not shit happens. If you're not racing to win or at least give it your all then what the fuck are you doing out there racing imo.
@KeganVanSickle
@KeganVanSickle 2 жыл бұрын
@@Nanerdeath I agree, give it 100%. We play ball sports and give it 100%. However, mx is a totally different beast. The consequences are much higher. You have to ride smart and not over your head. Give it 100% but in control. If that means taking a 2nd or 3rd, then so be it. It's better than riding over your head attempting to get 1st. Getting hurt and not being able to race the next weekend, or worse yet, getting seriously injured, the risk of losing your job/career and huge medical bills, etc. is simply not worth it. If you think it is, more power to you. Giving 100%, AND being smart can coincide.
