In this vid I shallow dive into the world of gyro stabilisation (stabilization?) on the Sony FX6 and shoot some test footage along the beach front in order to see what can be achieved by utilising the gyroscopic data recorded by the camera (which sadly, requires the use of Catalyst Browse...)
Once again, enormous thanks for the comically large team that came together at short notice to help make this video. For a one-man-band, I sure do have a big crew!
Apologies for:

Very good JP 👍🏻 i am testing the fx6 and the Crane 3s 🥴 this is sooo heavy and i think the solution without gimbal would be better for me, but i am not sure at this moment. What do you mean with 90 degrees? i have my settings on 180 😉👌 my bigest problem with the fx6 is that i am not sure that the sequence is perfect in setting, maybe this is the problem with the monitor 😔 but i am sure to solve this 💪🏼 the fx6 is good 👌 best cinematic greetings from germany

The smaller shutter angle is basically a faster shutter speed - I think it kind of freezes each frame a bit more which helps Catalyst Browse's stabilising algorithm. It's an imperfect solution to getting stable footage out of the camera, but it does kind of work. I expect in three years time there will be a camera with built in VND and IBIS!

@@schoeferfilm I have the fx6 and had the crane s3 delivered yesterday. like you say It does all add up to a hefty unit but you can fly it with the top handle, monitor and microphone with room for more. but that said I am in 2 minds wether to keep it or not due to the weight, I can also just about get the fly on a ronin -s with the 16-35f4. bu ti have have to put the monitor at the back to counter balance it!

@@CoastalImaging I have the Ronin SC2, but I haven't tried it with the FX6. I think if the FX6 were stripped back, it might just about work. Possibly,

You should! Its definitely worth taking an hour or so just to play around with it. It would be SO much better though if FCPX or Premier could use the gyro data though!

@@JPWilliamsTV For motion blur Reelsmart Motion Blur is expensive but really good! A cheaper option is the Pixel Motion Blur effect in After Effects. If you end up trying this out let me know how it goes :)

Thanks a lot for your video. I have two questions : you didn’t stabilise it in post production ? (It’s the steady shot system of the cam). Secondly, have A7siii and Fx6 exactly the same results in terms of quality of stabilisation ?

Hey brother, how usable is this on a gimbal for hand holding vlog and stuff? I'm using my a7ii but the videos look dated on a 4k screen TV. Thinking of upgrading and not sure if I should get this or an FX3, I truly love electronic ND filter though.

I don't seem to have the option to use the gyro stabilisation when I bring my stuff into CB from my FX-6, I'm using the the Sony FE 24-105mm F4 G OSS that came with my FX-6 not sure if I'm missing something or not. Haven't be able to find much on google about it.

I mean that wouldn't be a fair assessment because of the slow-motion, would it? I've been meaning to ask, since you have both the A7S III and the FX6, how do you feel about shooting video with both? Which one is easier for working on small projects? Is the FX6 a bit bulky and heavy to carry around, which discourages you from taking it with you in travel and such?
@JPWilliamsTV
@JPWilliamsTV 3 жыл бұрын
When I first got the FX6 - apart from finding it a bit tricky to use - I imagined that I probably wouldn't get much use out of the A7SIII going forward. However, now some time has passed I actually think it might be more like 50/50 in terms of which I use. One (of many) things I haven't quite got the hang of yet is matching the exposure in SLOG3 on both cameras. I can match at the start of the shot, but for run and gun the FX6 ND keeps the exposure stable, but on the A7SIII it's hard to run, gun AND manually adjust the VND. I do a lot of hiking to locations though, so often I'll just take the 'SIII. That said, I've got a Peak Designs strap for the FX6 now too, so maybe I can lug that around a bit easier.

Nice footage! Wouldn't the shutter angle produce natural motion blur when slowed by 50 percent like the footage shown?
@JPWilliamsTV
@JPWilliamsTV 3 жыл бұрын
Mayyyybe? But the angle is relative to the frame rate, which in this case was 50fps... so perhaps not.
@lachlanstamp4203
@lachlanstamp4203 3 жыл бұрын
@@JPWilliamsTV Ahh I see what you mean, but isn't shouldn't what's considered natural motion blur also relative to the slowed footage? Also, I'm glad to hear shutter angle is an option on the fx6 because I heard it's not on theFx3. I defiantly want to save up for one.

I used cb yesterday and was very impressed with it. although unfortunately I can't use it with my 16-35 f4 as it says there isn't enough metadata. other lenses I own work fine. (I did drop the 16-35 up scafell pike and dented it which probably didn't help. It's a bit battered 😳
