We take a look at the VCC/H.266 Video Codec which claims to be the future for how we stream and process video, but is it the perfect video codec or might is have to over come some hurdles before we start to see it being widely adopted? Well let's discuss it in today's video!

H264 is weak, use x264 compress and 16Mbps 1080p60, quality increase and actual hardware cost is little low... Use VP9 + hardware encoder.... 😂😂😂 🤢🤮

they recommend h264 because its the fastest to process, you're most likely not watching h264 streams tho, they're transcoded to av1,vp9,h264 etc.

@@FlamespeedyAMV Outdated compare to what? Compared to other video platforms they are the leader. When it comes to newer features like HDR, 8K and AV1 streaming for example youtube was the first to implement these afaik. Also while they recommend x264 as it is the simplest and easiest for most people or upload. KZfaq in fact offers the widest range of upload formats including near lossy codecs like Prores and DNxHD.

honestly i find it faster to upload my videos in AV1 i don't believe youtube has updated their recommended uploads in literal years and yes i realize it gets re encoded anyway but the file size goes from 15GB to 3.8GB on my end to upload for lossless

Hopefully, we get 12-bit colour and 4:4:4 chroma sampling with H.266 as well

@@McDudesthat is mainly for video production not for delivery. Codecs like prores 444 exist and are quite popular. Not needed by everyone, but for some people it's very helpful 😊

Why on earth would anyone need 12-bit 4:4:4 chroma on something like youtube? They don't even deliver movies to that standard in theaters. That's only required for video acquisition and VFX shots.

VVC will be a big player soon enough. One of the advantages with licensing groups is that to an extent they indemnify large corporations again't patent lawsuits. This is one reason why Apple has never supported FLAC as an audio codec. VC1 is here to stay because this video doesn't fully encapsulated how the MPEGLA hindered the transition to HEVC because of onerous increases in licensing costs. VC1 will keep them honest about VVC licensing. For consumers Decode performance is key. I suspect we'll see hardware decode support for VVC in the media players from 2024 and on as Mediatek is already shipping the Pentonic 2000 with VVC decoding in this years HDTV sets. Good compression is vital, the ability to distribute more high quality streams is crucial in not only commercial but residential applications. Dante already supports h.264 and h.265 with Dante AV-H adding VVC is only going to improve the reach.

Why can't the makers of h265 just simplify the licensing model? I think a lot of people would prefer h265 due to it's bit efficiency and it's simplicity compared to AV1 and VVC/h266 (i.e. it's a lot less computationally expensive to encode and decode making it easier to run on old hardware)

@@akhilleusuggo I'm pretty sure that's how it always has been when new codecs come out in the H.26X line. For example, H.265 came out all the way back in 2013, and it took forever for that to get browser support. Edge and Safari added HEVC support in 2017, and Chrome and Opera added it late 2022, 9 whole years after the codec came out. I feel like H.266 will be more supported eventually, it will just take time.
@akhilleusuggo

@@BonW You are very positive about something that is heavily licensed, that nobody uses today (no real open source provided, only personal projects etc.) I've tested it myself, and all major companies have already invested on AV1. AV1 already is supported on basically all browsers, open source, active development, license free. It is still a question on why would anyone use VVC (H.266). The time consumed to encode, the hardware required and electricity, maybe just better buy a new drive (specially how cheap they getting these days). The only answer is for streaming platform to save on bandwidth, but browsers are not supported, and it doesn't seem to be any soon.

Well. Looks like the internet picked the codec. Which is Av1. As royalties for 20% more compression just isn't worth it for companies. Av1 is now widely adopted, and all newer GPU's now have hardware accelerated decode, and encode (For the latest gen)
7 ай бұрын
H266 is ages away from getting hardware decoders, both phones and laptops, because of the complexity to decode you can not even use it like AV1 right now, imagine hardware encoding, imposible for consumers, at least in a couple of years, by then most of the devices will have AV1 decoders and decents CPU and GPU to encode. I'm already transitioning to AV1. AV1 is already adopted by KZfaq (not completely), OBS and most video editors, Android 14 requires hardware decoding, and SoC this year will have AV1 encoding support (not all of them). My laptop can handle up to 2k 60FPS editing, encoding in my laptop is slow, no hardware encosing but the CPU can encode 2K and even 4K.

Once upon a time long ago there was BETA. Along came VHS and Sony lost the battle. It's all about the money$. H.266 may win if MC-IF can get their transparent licensing working. Sony failed and the industry went VHS. Will history repeat itself?

@@squishy-tomato Totally disagree. H.266 will be the dominate format. If it provides better quality and image overall. No different than Nvidia DLSS. @@NBWDOUGHBOYtxaa solutions really aren’t a good analogy here due to the complexities and costs of going with one codec over another. Nvidia doesn’t charge devs to implement DLSS, Nvidia is also the market leader substantially so the majority of hardware can run DLSS.
