I worked SRT for DOE/LLNL in the late '90's. We used HK 33s in 5.56 and carried S&W 9mm pistols; never heard of anyone at DOE using a 9mm SMG. Maybe at another lab or at a power plant. Let me address something, some keyboard warriors in the comments are suggesting 9mm is safer to use than a rifle round at DOE because it might shoot something explosive like a nuke. The only people who have to worry about shooting an actual nuke are Air Force Security Forces, who patrol silos. At a DOE lab, the worst thing you could shoot was a glove box that contained SNM (special nuclear material) or other chemicals that were flammable or O2 reactive. We would practice shooting targets near glove boxes in the shoot house because accuracy was paramount. Even a 9mm could penetrate a glovebox, so we'd say we don't miss the bad guy, or we are all dead...from a chemical release, not a nuclear explosion.
@Cthippo16 ай бұрын
I believe these were used by the transport guards moving nuclear weapons around. They had a special muzzle device that was designed to interface with a firing port on the Semis and APCs.
@mistermonkey58426 ай бұрын
The only places I've seen these weebeasties are video of hanford and rocky flats where things were being transported about to places like pantex etc. Never seen them with regard to commercial nuclear or full up systems, as pointed out that would Air Force Security forces and they found the M16/M4 just fine.
@negativeimpact23816 ай бұрын
Also the DOE feds lol
@bobdeslob87684 ай бұрын
There are other DOE sites that aren’t labs m8. You definitely don’t want a negligent round flying around pantex for example. I will say based on the form factor and such this was more likely for OST not badge checkers.
@mistermonkey58423 ай бұрын
@bobdeslob8768 Actually, Pantex would probably be the best place given the highly insensative nature of the implosion lenses. If they can survive a B52 taking a nap because it got eppy and the resulting weenie roast, chances are a 5.56 or 9 isn't going to make that moment last forever.

I feel like what we really need is a whole long form 20 minutes on the fruits of the H&R booth as they seem to have the full run of weird Colt from the CMG down to this little screamer. If you watch enough old DOE video you'll see these, likely for the same reasons the Germans found for the wealth standardized H&K furniture: AR platform for muscle memory and prior service skills retention, 9mm so you aren't poking holes whwre you shouldn't while still poking holes where you should, small and ergonomic enough for cars, suvs, pickups, big trucks, small hallways, lab coats, field coats etc. DOE transported a lot of things a lot of places using public roads and discreetly labled trucks; sometimes you need enough response to keep the situation "under control" until the suburban with the M134 arrives.
