NEIN NEIN NEIN ! HEAT round do not MELT the copper liner. The copper liner is plastically deformed due to the intense pressure of the shockwave caused by detonating the explosive. That means a very high speed liner ( Tip and rear move at different velocities ). 7 km/s is a decent figure for the main body of the liner. Any metal armor it meets is plastically deformed due to intense pressure caused by the impacting liner. Yes, both get hot, but not hot enough to melt the armor.
@H1MIN3 жыл бұрын
You are correct that the copper liner does not melt but follows behind the high pressure jet. What is fascinating is at these speeds and temperatures, matter behaves differently. I found a good article that gets into more detail about the "jet" and "efp". defensepoliticsasia.com/heat-and-efp/ Thanks for the comment.

Its weird how HESH rounds work, just looking at the impact you'd think it hardly did anything, just a little mushed in dimple, but the shock wave formed throughout the armor shoots a little puck of steel from the inside at hypervelocity throughout the inside of the tank, with lots of extra little shotgun bits to boot. Works on the principle of those ball bearing kinetic sculpture things, where the ball bearings in a line pass the energy from the swing of one bearing through several others without moving them, and on to the last bearing in the line. Just this time the ball bearings are 6" of steel armor and the dropped bearing is several pounds of very brisant high explosive.🤣

@9thbloodandfire5084 жыл бұрын
@@patrylec1510 HESH rounds are not practically anymore these days. They pretty much lose their effect against modern armor with layers of different materials. On top a lot modern tanks have spall liner plates inside, means if a HESH hits you and the effect penetrates the armor, all spalls/splinters are absorbed by these plates.
@qasimmir71173 жыл бұрын
9th Blood and Fire HESH is used mainly these days as a general purpose round by the British Army Challenger 2s. If something is that heavily armoured as you describe, then simply fire a APFSDS round instead.
@alganhar13 жыл бұрын
@@9thbloodandfire508 The only thing HESH is not effective against these days is an MBT with modern armour. HESH is still perfectly effective against less well armoured vehicles, such as APC's and IFV's, Buildings, fortifications, legacy MBT's with homogenous rolled steel armour, and pretty much anything else either the tank crew or the infantry it is supporting want dealt with. Stating HESH is not practical anymore is idiocy, other tanks are the least common targets of tanks. Tanks mostly shoot at things the infantry they are supporting want killed, not other tanks. HESH is still perfectly good at killing those kinds of targets, so much so that the High Explosive rounds carried by Challenger II's are HESH. For a modern tank the crew would select APFSDS over HESH. They DO carry some you know, Challenger II has an 82 round ammunition capacity....

basically the shell is made of 2 parts: the core and the casing the casing is usually a softer metal like alluminum meanwhile the core is made of somethin like tungsten the casing acts like a sabot since the core is too small to fit in the barrel on its own. casing hits tank, deforms and the core goes through main issue is that apcr barely creates any shrapnel; post pen effects are pretty much none apart from the core itself. also they were very expensive to make so they just gave up on them if i missed something/misinformed ill love to hear it in a response to this comment

V - repeats a common inaccuracy about HEAT ammo.
@MaxRavenclaw5 жыл бұрын
Contrary to a widespread misconception (possibly resulting from the acronym HEAT) the shaped charge does not depend in any way on heating or melting for its effectiveness; that is, the jet from a shaped charge does not melt its way through armor, as its effect is purely kinetic in nature. And slat armour doesn't rely on causing premature detonation, but on deforming the fuse. Premature detonation would actually improve the penetration of the shaped charge in many situations.

When the tow missile detonates directly over a target (tank), it will be destroyed. How? I love your work and the animation is wonderful. @@ali012alshair Not sure what is confusing, it allows gas pressure to vent backwards so you get equal forces moving backwards and forwards, cancelling eachother out. All AT4s are recoilless rifles, they do not fire a rocket. However the grenade can be equipped with a rocket booster to increase range and accuracy. Modern TOWs and other weapons like the NLAW simply has a (or multiple, like the Bofors BILL 2) HEAT warheads directed downwards. They use proximity fuses to detonate rather than impact.

Oh those plucky "Brits" using silly little rounds while the rest of the NATO were poisoning their troops from DUP. The problem with armchair engineers is that most don't research the subject enough.... Yes, it is said that HESH hits the target and bits of metal go whizzing around the inside of the tank. Spall liners stop this, ceramic Armour (ours) stops this, thicker Armour stops this... Challengers have all this... but the only blue on blue that wasn't Abrams bouncing DUP's off Challengers, saw a single HESH take out another Challenger. Ask a British Gunner why they like HESH, you will only get a knowing smile. Remember this little Isle helped to test US Air Defenses in the 70's with it's V-Force, shutting down Military Radar/Command & Control/Communications... Then simulated bombing Norad, Cities and a number of US Airbases devoid of fighters that were frantically trying to find the V-Force. Still unchallenged the Victors, Viscounts and Vulcan's flew over the White House in "V" formation just to give US Generals a hint to their position.
