Haegeum is actually part of trilogy. First is Daechwita, then Haegeum, and last Amygdala. Suga plays both protagonist and antagonist is the first 2 MV's. He's basically dealing/battling with his different personas. The Last song, Amygdala, explains the scar and everything in Amygdala is the past trauma he has been through in his life. It's extremely raw and he is open about his struggles. Amygdala is the one that had me bawling my eyes out, because most ARMY know his past struggles. 💜

This song was written, composed, and produced entirely by himself! And yes, rhyming between English and Korean is very normal in their songs, you'll hear that a lot. Also, the 6 masked guys accompanying him in the beginning represent the 6 other BTS members. He also did a very cool hip-hop style dance choreography video for this song, lots of krumping moves. Plz react to that as well! Haegeum has a double meaning - it's the name for a traditional Korean stringed instrument, which he uses in the production of the beat. The word also means "to lift/free what is prohibited, banned or restricted". You should definitely react to the Rise of Bangtan docu-series, it documents their journey in chronological order. First chapter starts from their trainee years. You can go through their discography in chronological order too then. Watch their first music vid No More Dream, and then watch the first chapter of Rise of Bangtan

@@NathanWalters watch all three in order and prepare to have your mind blown. It's Daechwita, Haegum and finally Amygdala. The lyrics are very deep. Yoongi (Min Yoongi, aka SUGA) is really tranparent about his mental health, and he encourages other to not hide their mental health issues, but rather to recognize and heal/overcome/learn to cope. It is not surprising that Suga has won awards as a producer for other artist. There is no doubt Suga and RM are both lyrical and musical geniuses. The amount of respect they command from other artists never seems to be mentioned. BTS are the artists and musicians artists. With Jack in The Box and his solo headlining at Lollapalooza J Hope at last stepped up to join them. He was always an oustanding performer. His complete command and control of this immense project, demonstrated not only his own unique artistic voice but also the strength of his fully matured artistic vision. BTS has been both hot house and pressure cooker for the creation of some of the most interesting musical 'voices' since the 80s and 90s.

I'm not sure how much you know about Min YoonGi aka Suga/AugstD.... I hope the following info might be of interest to you. He began writing music lyrics and working with MIDI at age 11 and held a part-time job composing and arranging music at a recording studio at age 16. Active under the name "Gloss" (wordplay on his name YoonGi, which means "to shine") as an underground rapper in his hometown Daegu, He originally entered Big Hit Entertainment as a producer at age 17 and became the second member to join BTS..... At BTS debut in 2013 he was 20 y.o.... he is one of BTSs main producers/songwriters/composers and has over 150 song copyrights.... he also produces for other artists and has won awards for his work. Suga (SHU-GA.... from Shooting Guard - the position he played in basketball) ...... AgustD = SUGA + DT (Daegu Town - his hometown) Spelt Backwards Between his commitments as a member of BTS, Suga/Agust D took advantage of time on the plane and in hotel rooms after concerts to continuously produce and compose music. In an interview for Grazia Korea, Suga/Agust D expressed a desire to release the music he wanted to do without having to consider popular appeal or music ranking. He intended to release his music for free in the form of a mixtape to avoid such considerations, commenting that an album "has a feeling of being trapped in some sort of framework" due to the need for company involvement in promotion and advertising. He has released 2 mixtapes - this is his first official album (of which he continues to maintain full creative control) Developing Agust D musically on the base of hip hop, much of Agust D's inspiration for the lyrics came from his own stories of dream, youth, and reality. In order to differentiate his work from that of his work as Suga, he developed the alter ego "Agust D". Haegeum has 2 meanings...1. it is a Korean traditional musical instrument with 2 strings and.... 2. to lift a ban/to free what was restricted. This is the middle song in a trilogy..... He is a master storyteller.... a fellow army best explained the trilogy as - Daechwita... ridding himself of the need to prove his worth to others Haegeum... ridding himself of the confines of modern society Amygdala... he investigates the inner demons and trauma that started his confinement in the first place. Suga/AgustD was involved in all aspects of this song and music video and had great input into how the music video was designed/produced (working as usual with Director Lumpens (Choi YongSeok) who does most BTS MVs) - Yoongi wrote, composed and produced the song, he conceptualised the MV and had creative control.... he is a true genius. Hope you have a great day💜💜Sending Greetings from Australia

@@Frayed7 fascinating! Yeah I'm thinking English loan word, but I'm gonna check Doolset's trans to see if she mentions it. Sounds essentially the same though with identical meaning. From: The Sounds of Korean (p. 220), by J. Shin, J. Kiaer, & J. Cha, 2012, Cambridge: Cambridge University Press. If you liked this, you could watch the predecessor MV, Daechwita, which is also a great song and MV. The word ‘haegum’ has a double meaning, it is the name of a traditional Korean stringed instrument he uses in the track, but it also means the lifting of a ban/prohibition. If you watch this live performance you will see the actual instruments: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oqiCqKWCv8mRZ2Q.html Since you were asking, I think they often do rhyme Korean and English words in their lyrics. One line might be English, the next Korean, or even a Korean line they’ll drop in an English word. In the case of rhythm/haegum which you were talking about, he is rhyming the two, but he’s actually saying rhythm with a Korean accent. For translations Doolset is good, because they explain things (like what haegum means) , and they have both the Korean script and English translation.

3:35 the line you were talking about he is rhyming the English work 'rhythm" with "haegeum." He's just using it in a Korean sentence with a Korean accent. Nice catch! You've obviously noticed Kpop mixes Korean and English. Part of this is to appeal to an international audience, part of it is because Koreans think it sounds cool, and part is because most Koreans know enough English for it to make sense. This is because English is mandatory throughout all of high school often starting even earlier. But this line you caught from Agust D is actually an example of a loan word. Like English has tons of loan words from other languages so does Korean. Although Korea's main loan words come from Japanese, Chinese, and English.

3:31 He did say rhythm but in his language the r and l are interchangeable. Yes they are constantly rhyming English words with Korean words. Fun Fact: People usually look up the definition of haegum and stop at it's first definition which is a stringed instrument found in Korea. If you know what it sounds like you can hear it in this song. However the meaning of haegum in this song also means a lifting of bans. Within BTS, there many things they were not allowed to do but as the guys get older and they renegotiated their recent contract, we are seeing those restrictions lifted.

Suga introduced his new album, D-Day, on Palette, a talk show hosted by IU, a Korean female solo artist who collaborated with him on People pt.2, and on the Disney+ channel's SUGA: Road to D-DAY. [IU's Palette🎨] IU X SUGA Palette (With SUGA) Ep.19 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hbZpfJWonLuxdJc.html And if you're interested in what kind of person he is, I recommend every episode of the talk show he hosts, Suchwita (meaning time to get drunk with Suga). Especially, I highly recommend EP.9, in which RM hosts instead of Suga, and Suga attended as a guest to promote his album. :) You can watch all of these videos on BTS' official channel, BANGTANTV. :) This MV is the second part of a trilogy of music videos, 1st one is "Daechwita", then "Haegeum", the next is "AMYGDALA". Watching these music videos in order will help you understand. :) The trilogy represents the process of Suga facing his trauma head-on and being freed from it. He recently sold out all of his world tours and ended successfully. Here I would highly recommend his live clips. :) Agust D '대취타' Live Clip (full ver.) | SUGA: Road to D-DAY kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d9Ngg5eSldemY3k.html Agust D '해금 (Haegeum)' Live Clip (full ver.) | SUGA: Road to D-DAY kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oqiCqKWCv8mRZ2Q.html And... SUGA: Haegeum | The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon kzfaq.info/get/bejne/araFZ9KXx7m-iok.html Oh, Haegeum has a choreography too. He can't dance this choreography while singing because the dance is too difficult, but Suga said he practiced it hoping fans would enjoy it. :) [CHOREOGRAPHY] Agust D ‘해금 (Haegeum)’ Dance Practice kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ZuB-Zbyp1LbSdGw.html

As other Armies have said this is part of a trilogy.. Daechwita, Haegeum, Amygdala.. Which is his own story about his struggles, even within himself.. Haegeum is a double play on words, a Haegeum is a 2 string traditional Korean instrument(you can hear it playing in the background) It also means to free that which is forbidden. Yoongi does so many things in this video like smoking which is extremely looked down upon especially for an Idol.. Yoongi and RM are a master at wordplay in between languages..,💜💜💜

He’s really that good, they all are. They rhyme in English and Korean, and both translation’s either match or mean two different but related things so you can have double meanings. They can use sound alike words so you think you are hearing English but it’s Korean and both meanings work.

Yes, they (BTS and members) have some rhyme schemes that both rhyme Korean with English words in the verse, as well as verses that rhyme in both translations as well. They are geniuses. Also, translations often lose a lot of the depth of meaning, which is why sites like doolset exist, to give more cultural context to translations. Some songs also benefit from viewing a video breakdown of the song to help get the depth of the lyricism (DKDKTV and xCeleste are good sources.) There is a reason why these guys are being studied in colleges all over the world in part because of their multilingual wordplay, poetry and meaningful lyricism. Some of their songs go very deep and layered indeed, with one word or phrase having 2, 3, 5, or even 7 meanings, in multiple languages. They use English, Korean, Konglish (the combo of the two) Japanese and even Spanish in their songs.

Exactly. To appreciate BTS artistry you need to do lots of reserch. Subtitles look like they are enough but trust me they aren't showing more than half of the meanings. Also music videos have their own details. I don't know this person care enough to do that. We ARMY continuously find so much genius details about their work all the time. If these works are not looked deep into they miss out a main part of what BTS are. And why they are admired.
@NanciBK

@@lakshi9276 I don't agree that you need to do a lot of research to appreciate their art. Art needs to be, above all, accessible, and BTS has worked hard to make sure that their art can be appreciated on so many levels, depending on how deep you want to dive. It's not exclusionary to the casual listener, but I agree that you can get more out of the experience with a little extra work. That's true of most things in life. It's also true that many people will not do the extra work to understand the depth and layers and complexity of their art, but that's ok too. That means those layers are not for them. You get out of it what you want. BTS are geniuses and their art shows this for exactly the fact that it is both layered, nuanced and deep, **and** accessible to the casual listener at the same time.

Suga, genius. These are the only words needed to describe him. He is an amazing producer so it is nice to watch a reactor who can appreciate the production. You said this is a movie, well it is the 2nd part of his trilogy. Part 1 - Daechwita Part 2 - Haegeum Part 3 - Amygdala It would be great if you could watch the other 2 and then we can help you to understand them. Amygdala is like a prequel explaing the trauma he really went through that caused him to create his Agust D persona and the metaphorical scar across his eye. Daechwita and Haegeum then describe his personal cyclical journey. Can't think of any other way to describe them without giving away too much. The first instrument you hear in the song Haegeum is a Korean 2 stringed instrument called a haegeum. It's other translation is freeing something that was once forbidden. Great reaction. Can't wait for the next one. Just a note for you. ARMY will watch any length of video you put out. Feel free to watch an MV through and then go back and watch with the lyrics if you want. We will watch. That way you can concentrate on the music and visual without trying to read lyrics at the same time.

Good job Nathan, for researching and reviewing. The songs he and RM write have deep meaning and connect all the songs together on a storyline. Did you look up what a Haegeum is? Can you hear it at the beginning and in the video? This was taped in Thailand, we have never seen him this violent although the classic Daechwita is pretty amazing too. This one is his latest and last of the Triad albums, because he has worked through all the hate, depression, and killing off his old self... in real life. Amygdala... look it up, and Snooze are great stories of truth. Again this is the last of 3 major videos the final over with it all process. They all speak of what is expected in Korean society, and the strain it puts on young people, he is the voice of change to himself and others. He does a lot of things in this video that the Kpop idols are not allowed to do and is going against the tradition of being successful. No kpop idols should not be seen smoking they get a bad rap... he defies it all. He doesn't really smoke, just here. RM actually rhymes a lot of Korean words with English and it seems to amaze rappers here in the west. Army gets a lot of the props and what he is saying from past videos we put it together. D-DAy by AgustD album shows how he became scar faced and AgustD begain.

Suga is an absolutly genius in writing and producing. Most of his song are a reflection of his life and what he went through. He has had a very hard life growing up til recently. Both him and RM are lyric genius' the just have different delivery methods. Suga is my bias so i love his type of rap. He wrote and produced this all himself. This a 3 part trilogy. 1st is Daewita, the haegam the Amydgala the last is technically a prequel that brought out his August D persona. He is my bias because i relate the most to him. My heart goes out to him even through my own pain. Im trying to find my closure at 46 still where he found and closed that door. And is very happy now. Agust D is put to rest as he says. Agust D was his sad angry rebellious persona and now he put it to rest and he is happy. He says he foregave everyone and it wasnt worth living i. THe past it just drags you down. Once he did that he wasnt angry anymore and could close that door on Agust D. My fav song is Amydgala and snooze. But i love all 3 of his albums. You need to check them out. He sings very raw and vulnerable lyrics that nobody else dare to do in Korea. Im glad you enjoyed him. Listen to more of his solo work and of the others they are fascinating and awe worthy. They are on top for a reason and its not just for lyric and choreo its what they do outside of the business and what they mean to Army and Army to them. No other fandom is like Army same to BTS. They try to be but they wont reach that level. Breaking records winning awards yes yes they will but thats not what im taking about other group wants what BTS has and tried but never achieved. Sorry i kinda got of topic but im so into BTS i want to shout it out lol. Great reation.

This song is the middle song of a trilogy (Deachwita, Heageum, Amygdala) which tell the story of Yoongi's mental health journey through his traumas and towards love, for himself and others. Many of his songs talk about his mental health journey, but those three in particular are a set which tell a story in order. There are reasons why he is fighting himself in this video. Also, since you are a producer (and so is Yoongi) a Heageum is a two stringed traditional instrument, and you can hear it in the mix as well. It's played with a bow and has a high-pitched tone. He produces his own music for the most part. Here Haegeum means the breaking of a ban or taboo, breaking of a pattern. Also, the Haegeum has two strings - the two red chopsticks represent his music. That's why we focus on them at both the beginning and the end of the video. He both slays his enemies and feeds himself with his music.

I highly recommend an explanation video for Deachwita, as there is a lot of historical and cultural refernces you will miss in the lyrics and visuals. DKDKTV's explained vid for Deachwita is a good one, though he doesn't mention everything. It's also set in a historical park which a lot of dramas and period films and stuff also use.
