It's good that you tested it in cold weather. It means that people might be able to use it in winter. Although it might take a long time to heat food up, it's better than nothing.

This was really impressive. I didn't think you'd get anything done with the wind, the sun angle and freezing temps, but that simple box solar oven really delivered the goods. Really amazing demonstration of what the sun can do.

I like the 2.0 they added the hold downs and it’s adjustable, I’ve used the original Haines solar cooker and it worked ok but the pot stand didn’t work with my cast iron skillet but still managed to cook bacon and eggs in about an hour, it was July about 85°F and partly sunny unfortunately it rained the rest of my camping trip and didn’t get to use it and when I got it out a couple of months later it wasn’t nearly as shiny as when new and took half of a very sunny day to reheat about a quart of chili. I recommend a parabolic made of anodized aluminum it’s much hotter and you can polish it up and make it shiny again but much more expensive. Thanks for sharing 😎✌️

Indeed, I would *LOVE* a parabolic mirror: one meter in diameter could set a pan of bacon on fire in a few seconds. :-) If the sun ever shows up here in summer, I will try baking cornbread in the solar cooker.

G'day Dave, Yay Team ! I mirrored a TV Satellite Dish, and used it to run an old Stovetop Coffee-Percolator - back when New York had no Gridpower from a Storm, a few years ago ; it could take 40 minutes to make Coffee, but after applying Lampblack to the Percolator's Bottom that came down to something like 23 minutes. Later on I had a long hard go at pyrolising Wood with it, to make Synthetic BioGas - Methane, Hydrogen, Carbon Monoxide & Steam... I found that the Showstopper were ANY amount of Cloud, Haze or Smog, and Wind...., for Pyrolisis I made a double-Walled double-Airgap thermo-insulating "Teacosy" to ward off the Cold Air & Convective Losses. Maybe for Cooking the lack of "Efficiency" prevents you from Carbonising the Beans...? So, um..., only Lampblack the Pot when you're boiling Water - maybe ? It's messy as a Bastard to work with. I have a couple of Playlists of the proceedings, "SunPower...." & "SunGas"...; but I'd need a 15 Square metre Parabolic Reflector & a 10,000 Litre Watertank inside a 15,000 Litre Watertank as a Gasometer - to run my 3 Burner Kitchen Stove...(!). Such is life, Have a good one... Stay Safe... ;-p Ciao !
@Desertphile

I bloody *LOVE* the idea! In fact... oh, wait.... I recall that I had a unused sat dish, but I used it to cover the fresh water spring. I wonder if I can get a used sat dish via ebay, and mirrorize it. You are a genius! (In fact, you clearly are.) Yes, on a sunny day my stew would have been "toast" as the Yankees say. I would have to face the solar cooker away from the sun to prevent my lunch from going up in smoke and CO2.

@@Desertphile Thankyou, kind sir. I used Aluminum Foil from the Stupormarked, and Contact Cement..., the Foil goes on in slightly overlapping Segments, I did 8 of them, on a 0.4 Sq Metre Dish. Some of the older Dishes are bigger than others, I have a bigger one which, about 1.2 Sq M., which I never got around to Alumunising - it's a Fibreglass Dish with a "Pebble-Finish" on the inside, probably to defocus it's Solar Reflectivity to prevent it cooking the Reciever as the Seasons move the Sun's Track up & down the Meridian (it's white Fibreglass, too...), and I never got around to sanding all the little 1/2-millimeter Lumps back to match the Parabola. The big one was to buggar around with a Steam Engine, but Photovoltaics meant that the Project was "Back-Burnered". But there's endless hours of fun to be had with Solar Thermal Inventiveness. Have a good one. Stay safe. ;-p Ciao !

The bright side is..., now nobody is calling Preppers, "Doomsday Lunatics" any more ; so, there IS that. Not only Schadenfreude, but "nyahh Nyaaahh NyaNya NYAAAA Nyaaah ! The ideal way to incubate bacteria before reaching a high enough temperature to kill them. Yum!
@Desertphile

Fortunately 71c temperature can be achieved in the solar oven to kill "almost all" bacteria. It's the hearrty survivors I worry about. :-)
@bdf2718
@bdf2718 4 жыл бұрын
@@Desertphile Yeah, but it's the slow ramp-up that's the problem. The lower temperatures allow them to reproduce faster. Some of them produce toxins, and you consume those toxins whether they're alive or dead. So it's not whether or not it reaches 71 C but how fast it does so.

I Love this cat video so hate to give a serious response. But it should be noted that at minute 4 of the video, Desertphile says the soup had been heating for only 40 minutes before it was too hot to eat. Surely not enough time to worry about bacteria.

I know the earth is flat because they tried to brainwash us in school with a globe, but in the stores they sell paper maps and they are always flat. Sea captain navigation charts.......flat. For practical purposes it's flat. I just don't know how they get all that flat paper to end up in a ball called earth. I have no problem with the county maps in a book. Strictly a topo guy.

The Earth is indeed flat, or so says: NIKOLA TESLA: "Earth is a realm, it is not a planet. It is not an object, therefore, it has no edge. Earth would be more easily defined as a system environment. Earth is also a machine, it is a Tesla coil. The sun and moon are powered wirelessly with the electromagnetic field (the Aether). This field also suspends the celestial spheres with electro-magnetic levitation. Electromagnetic levitation disproves gravity because the only force you need to counter is the electromagnetic force, not gravity. The stars are attached to the FIRMAMENT."

AngryNotSoOldHippy Hmm... the reflective transparent shroud that surrounds it is clearly returning a lot of light. On aggregate with the plastic it is clearly in not black in the visible spectrum even if the pot is dark. In fact it returns so much light that it’s difficult to see the pot. It would be a lot more effective on a small cooking stand.
