Half kiln shelves

I feel like a lot of people don't know about half shells when they first by their kiln. this is just an overview of what a half shelf can do for you.

Thanks for the reminder. I just made something bigger and I have a half shelf I forgot about. That's my answer to how it's going to fit!

Potter tip lol if you run a yard stick across the top of the kiln and it doesn’t touch the top of your pot it will fit

I got 2 15" half moon shelves and 1x 15" round shelf. The half-moon go into the aura prozone (it's a rack for my grill) and act as a heat deflector for low n slow. I did a pork shoulder for 14 hours with them and they performed as well or better than my original smoke stone (which cracked, piece of $h!+) . The 15" round is my pizza stone. I got that to 550 last night in under an hour.

When did you take out the brick? Also, how did you decide where to place the half shelf posts in relationship to the 3 posts you stack over when you layer regular full size shelves?

How often do you have to re apply kiln wash. I have my kiln one year. Should I put a new coat of kiln wash on.

I have 1 full shelf and 4 half shelves. I would like to glaze fire 2 large plates. Can I place a plate to glaze fire in the center of 2 half shelves ? Will the narrow space between the shelves affect the plate even if the shelves are abutted ? Thank you

When using a half shelve I put a cone 6 in and it did not bend very much.

The usage of a half shelf has nothing to do with how hot the kiln gets. I would check your kiln and its elements or the way that you put the sitter. Especially if you have an older kiln.

I’ve just started loading kilns for my studio and we were taught to stack as many things as possible, is there a reason why you don’t? Or was this just a weird load because it was for a video

Stacking Greenway and you're kiln is usually for experienced Potters who understand where and how to stack things so that you don't get pressure cracks. we will address stacking at a later time but I think for new people who have just discovered their kilns or are still learning how to work them should wait a little while longer. I very much don't expect a beginner who's looking up videos on how to operate their kiln to know how to load efficiently so that no green ware cracks. I stack mine but I don't want to give people too much information at once.

Earth Nation Ceramics okay that makes a lot of sense. I’ve never been really taught the proper way to load, it’s all been trial and error. I guess I will patiently wait for said video. By the way I really enjoyed this video because my studio only has half shelves and they were talking about buying full shelves but now watching this I don’t think we will.
