You know what Matt, that was a very clever idea there. Thank you for sharing this novel solution. A couple of minor points though for those viewing: 1) It's not called lead free glass it's low-iron glass that is clear as the glasses natural iron content has a greenish-blue tint. The thicker the glass the more noticeable this tint would be. Low iron glass has a ferric oxide of only 0.01% compared to normal glass. 2) Make sure you use a low modular 'neutral cure' silicone to bond the sheets to the wall. Or a 'mirror silicone' which is the same basically. These have a neutral ph, so don't contain any active acids or alkaline which could react/erode the rear painted surface while curing. Acetic silicone (the vinegar smelling ones) could eat through the paint weakening it so that you could see it or the bond could fail over time. Also 'low modulus' will cure with more elasticity and allow the panels to expand very slightly through natural temp changes. (Low modulus=stays elastic, High modulus=cures hard) 3) Finish the joints to the worktop using proper profiled silicone tools such as those made by FUGI. See this brilliant video on how to apply _kzfaq.info/get/bejne/lap5Z8uXrbPDeJs.html IMHO I think you would also have saved yourself a lot of work and it would have looked better if you had thought about the internal corner angle boxings before fixing the glass. (a single splay perhaps) but then hindsight is really a wonderful thing. But all in all I will stash this clever idea away ! Thank you

Thanks for your comments mate! All valid points and yes your right it is low iron, not lead. And neutral silicone through it’s the way to go as you said ;)

Just got quoted $800 - 1100 AUD, Including installation in Adelaide 700x2900 mm (one piece) which is about 320 £, a 3x1m slab tile worked out to be too risky and pricey $2-4k. Or $330 plus $250 for wooden box, if I bought it , moved it, cut it, and installed, but notoriously hard to cut and move.

I love your idea. My kitchen is ancient. It has tiles on And i hate it as grout is gungy. How do I camouflage the tile?. If I remove the tile it makes a hole in the plaster. .. I LL have to use colour glass I suppose. Utterly brilliant. I notice too , you have no trim under your cupboard units . Did you put lights under. I saw led tape light that stick on battery operated rechargable

Its low iron glass not low lead. Very good video tho this what i do for a living. And who ever quoted you for the glass is very reasonable as it would have cost probably £800 in clear and £2400 in painted from my company.

Hi Matt, great video! watched it a couple of times. May I ask why you went with multiple sheets instead of 1 sheet for the back of the hob? Thanks
@MattHutton
@MattHutton 2 жыл бұрын
Because the glass is perfectly straight and the wall isn’t. It also made the glass cheaper because the manufacturer didn’t need to special order an extra large sheet of glass. And I would have paid for the wastage of the glass that was cut away to create the t shape on the back wall.

Hi Matt Great job. Did you add silicon to the gaps in the glass behind the hob? And does that gap need to be 3mm on both sides? So that gap would be 6mm? Cheers

Not sure why they would charge so much for painting 🤣 advice to anyone trying don't use any paint needs to be a specialist paint to adhere to glass ! It will peel and delaminate after a while ! I've seen it happen so many times ! And make sure it's toughened or heat pans or pushing in plugs will crack it

@@MattHutton yes they can last year's ! I work with glass day in day out and have seen hundreds of DIY jobs that have failed years later ! The specialist paint is nearly £100 with the etching additive etc but is guaranteed for 10+ years not sure why any company would charge so much for paint ! Wouldn't at my company !

Low iron toughened glass. No such thing as led glass. That paint will also fall off with time. Also safety glass wont crack

Why can't you just paint the wall ther color of your choice, and then put the glass on versus painting the glass? Love the look of plain glass splashback. 1st saw it in Architectural Digest Magazine for a London Kitchen but no description of glass type etc. I'm in U.S. Thanks for the video.
@MattHutton
@MattHutton 2 жыл бұрын
Yes you can do that too if you used screws to hold the glass against the wall. Otherwise you would see the silicone used to stick the glass to the wall. Also you will be able to see the texture of the wall through the glass, which is no bog deal if you like that, it could be nicer. If you spray the back of the glass directly, it becomes one flat block colour.
