Nothing would have been avoided, the Forerunners were ridding the high horse and thought the Mantle of Responsibility was theirs alone. Of course, they grossly underestimated how powerful the Flood was and even if the Humans would try to explain, they wouldn't listen. Then they punished humans by devolving them to the bronze age and this sealed their fate, they would stand alone against an impeccable enemy that was made by their creators (The precursors) to punish the Forerunners for killing/betraying them. This was their punishment.

Even if they did (which some of them probably did), the Forerunners have hated humanity ever since humanity was advanced enough for the Precursors to want to test us for the Mantle after deeming the Forerunners as unworthy, and that was 10 million years before all this happened. Historical prejudice plays a massive part, as no matter what the Humans would have said or shown them, the Forerunners simply had no reason to believe them. I could see several possibilities of a warning being received: 1: The Forerunners believe that the Flood are a fabricated lie for the Human empire to have an official excuse to invade and take Forerunner territory and resources. 2: They believe the Flood is a false-flag operation, either misinformation or a bioweapon specifically engineered by Humanity to be used against the Forerunners, and would put Humanity in a better light when they come to "fix" the Flood problem for the Forerunners. 3: The Flood were a human bioweapon planned for use against the Forerunners, but it got out of control.breached containment and now Humanity are trying to rein it back in/clean up their mess. These or some combination/variation of these would be how the Forerunners would react to the Humans showing then proof of the Flood, all the while underestimating the effectiveness and adaptiveness of the parasite.

One thing I really like about the second Halo trilogy, particularly Halo 4, are the terminal logs. We are to given insight to the Human-Forerunner conflict, which started because of Humanity “pruning” worlds beset by Flood infection, which at first, the Forerunners did not understand, thus retaliated, & then devolved Humanity as punishment before inquiring as to why Humanity did what it did. I really appreciate how the Librarian gave Humankind the benefit of the doubt, & sowed into our genes, the eventualities that would bring about Man’s great return. Much additional information about earlier Humanity is, of course, gleaned from the canon Halo novels commissioned by 343 Industries.

They saw the humans they stole the mantle from as beneath them and disregarded them as a result. This would become their undoing, just as the precursors indented. Humanity by contrast... a part of their soul would die with each planet they glassed. They also knew they couldn’t fight the flood or the forerunners head on, so they aimed at glassing the flood out of existence as quickly as possible.
