Day 2 at Eurobike consisted of some real analysis of Scope's new 3d printed hubs. GCN described these as making incredible wheels. I think an honest person would describe them as utter crap, the holes look like octagons. I also got a first look at some NACA-profiled aero spokes.
And even though you may think it was AI, I got a selfie with my hero, none other than David Arthur ‪@davidarthur‬
We also ran into Chris Miller ‪@ChrisMillerCycling‬

Been in the endurance racing world for a long while now. Should have been designed into the system from the start. Marketing saying they copied the car industry yet didn't bother with this likely as the first to market cost would be extremely high to justify it. Guess now it is reasonable seeing how much people are paying for bikes these days.

Hambini had to end the video there before things got out of hand. Re: hydraulic decouplers. We all use them/ know they exist in other industries just waiting for the wanketeers to market them as a new must have miracle. I've gone to the effort of preemptive product names: so Shimano system will be called Hydrolink and SRAM Rapidhose, LTWOO will be HhRX

As someone into the 3d printing world, one of the main reasons you would replace conventional manufacturing with 3d printing is if there were geometries that were just not possible to manufacture. It doesn't seem like those hubs are solving any problems and adding to complexity by having computer generated structures.

If you're old enough 3D printing seems like the CNC of the day. Back then tons of crap was quickly machined out of aluminum billet instead of forged and most of it quickly failed because it just wasn't strong enough. Cranks, seatposts, hubs...all had gorgeous color anodizing and quickly ended up in a recycling bin and (sometimes) the rider in the hospital. How long before 3D printed stuff is in a recycling bin?

The factory pre-built rim brake wheel market is dumping all its stock i think. I had a hell of a time finding a decent wheelset that was a, available to buy in the UK, b, did not cost a fortune and c, was not either mavic, fulcrum or campag. I rode mavic for the last 35 years because of their SUP tech where they weld the rims together. This weld makes it so you do not get stuttter when braking. Others that use pins to join the rim jionts tend to get a build up of rubber that causes the stuttering. Even if you clean the rubber off there will be most times a metal lip from the pinning process that will still cause the stuttering. Even pinned then milled rims will still get that metal lip over time causing the stuttering when braking. So i like Mavics. Till i got a pair of Mavic Cosmic Elite wheels in 2018 The rim is SUP welded like the Open CD series. Aero spokes. They look the part, feel the part and act the part till you start using them on a regular basis. Unlike fulcrum and others, Mavic do not seem to have a no twisting of the aero spoke tech on most of their wheels. This leaves you at the mercy of having to constantly twist, with a bladed spoke tool, the spokes back into the proper angle. After every ride i would be using the tool to twist the damn spokes back. If you only twist the bladed spoke and not the nipple with it at the same time, you are slowly but surely trueing the wheel into being bent. This is what happened to the rim over time. I bent it out of shape and made it useless due to the daily spoke twisting that i had to corrent. The wheel set was tensioned for me when i first got them. So these were not loose spokes but a crap system that does not hold the spoke into place on the hub. So i am staying away from Mavic as none of their weels have a tech to stop the aaro spokes from twisting. Fulcrum and campag have this tech built into their wheels and their spokes do not twist. Why am i saying all this? I bought a pair of Vision Trimax 30KB's. But instead of a bike shop where you normally buy bike parts, i had to buy it on ebay cos no shops here in the UK had rim brake wheels for sale. They did have some but they were mostly carbon and in the 750+ pound sterling range. I am not in a position to spend 750 or more for a set of wheels. I ended up spending 300 pound on the set. Lets see if their wheels hold up better. They look really well made and i saw how they are made in a yourtube clip. They properly relieve the stress and re-true when buidling the wheels like you should to get a propely built wheel. I was impressed when i saw that. They even had a machine that stressed the wheel for them. It was as if somebody stood with all their weight on top of one side of the hub and did the same on the other side. Rinse and repeat a few times. On my every day bikes that i ride i have 105 hubs on 32 hole Mavic Open CD's. GOod wheels. They use J bent spokes. NO aero spokes. J bent aero spokes also wont bend. Long read....sorry :) BUt i was so impressed with the Vision wheels and the quality that i also did not know what to think of that agricultural description. It made it almost sound bad when then are good wheels. These wheels were not so long ago in the range i could not afford. But people are dumping their rim brake wheels so i could get them.

am I wrong in thinking the t1550 downtube leading edge iss a bit too blunt and the taper towards the trailing edge a bit too aggresive to be ideal? also am waiting to see if farports offer and rims that are 30+ mm wide and 60+ mm deep. Would be great to have a wide tyre at the back for rolling resistance and comfort gains without gimping aerodynamics by putting a way too wide tyre for the rim.

My bet is that within a few years the tech to deflate and possibly inflate tires remotely, will shrink down to the size of a presta valve. Being able to lower the tire pressure when going from a dry enviroment that now changed to a wet one for the rest of the day, no longer has to involve a stop and bike change. Marginal gains and pro teams with huge budgets will not shy away from this. Just look at Dylan Groenewegen's ugly as fudge batman nose piece on his glasses. Funny thing is, he won the stage he wore those and everybody, including myself, was laughing at him for wearing those. I bet after he won the stage wearign those they were not longer laughing. I wasnt.

Its a bunch of blunt hating... I dont get it to be honest. Some people don't accept.. that for others product performance trumps safety and reliability..... sure the hubs may not be the safest, but 500g of weight saving comparing to other top range deep wheel sets?. that a hell of a lot in an Ironman distance. And I don't think performance athletes care about bullet proof safety.. But lets call it cycling hipster arrogance... If people buy pure race products and chose to ride them every day its their problem. hydraulic decouplers would be useful if the frame holes could let them pass through, at least most of the carbon and alloy frame holes only let the hose pass, and it seems that the decoupler is a little bit bigger. i have a pair of formula brakes with its "speedlock" connector (what is more or less the same as a decoupler) and its useless, it let you remove the brake caliper for what? the connector diameter is massive, its impossible to get it through a frame.

3D printing or SLS was developed for rapid prototyping without the need for machining or mould tooling . But it’s fast becoming a marketing managers wet dream. People on the street seem to think it magic or better than a cnc made part , or a part that injection moulded . It’s not in most cases . Saddles custom made that are 3D printed is a benefit , but apart from that it’s just over priced hype

Just because you CAN 3D print something doesn't mean you SHOULD.

With all of these "innovations" in the drive train, I just want one thing to be solved, that is the elimination of the drop chain. It's unbelievable that's still a thing that happens at the highest level every race every year, multiple times, on so-called top "tech", which being maintained by top mechanics. It's a real shame that this is still a thing considering how agricultural the nature of this thing is. We don't see our car or plane dropped a chain that often ain't ya? No matter how companies like L-Twoo or whatever maps their road, if this thing didn't get solved, nah. It's just a shame of the whole cycling industry. Just crashed at 40kph+ because of a dropped chain a month ago, suffered a lot. Ironically what brings me peace is to later what all the videos of pros crashing from the same thing and convincing myself well now you are one more thing similar with the pros! The latest encounter of such thing in the pro peleton is just 2 days ago, at the Stage 5 of this year's TdF when Cavendish got his historical 35th win - just after he made through the finish line and stopped pedaling, that chain dropped! Obviously that day the cycling god is on his side so that all happens after he's done it. This is just so embarasing as a industry. Now knowing even if on a well maintained bike that worth a cheap car, with top "techs", it's still a gamble that there are some not-so-small chances that you'll kiss the ground, just making standing up and do a "sprint" feels so reluctant on me -- well, what for? I just don't trust this thing anymore. How was your engineering view on this stuff?

Its called a 'narrow wide chain ring'. Used in mountain/XC bike drive trains very successfully , for decades. Why roadies dont use it? Not sure, maybe shifting ease or efficiency losses. Check out "berm peak" bike channel for a full demo. easy enough to find.
