I've waited 8 years for the Hamilton Murph watch (ref. H70405730) to finally be available, and not just in the screen-accurate size, but also in a more palatable and modest, 38mm diameter. But is this release too little, too late? Or has Hamilton finally created the ultimate, do-it-all, any situation, automatic field watch under $1000? In this video, I review the Hamilton Murph watch, and share my firsthand experience with a true movie icon that boasts a surprising heritage and design, and a link to a unique and fascinating military history. Prepare to blast off for another independent and in-depth review where I discuss the positives, negatives, specs, and performance of this true strap monster watch, and its meaning both on screen and in real life. What do you think of the Hamilton Murph watch? Please share in the comments!

Way more. Interstellar is one of my favorite movies of all time and it’s no surprise i absolutely fell in love with this watch when i first saw it. As a guy who prefers 40-42mm exclusively, i definitely think the 38mm is absolutely perfect for the Murph and would love to be able to buy one.

“One for you and one for me.” That scene endeared the practice of gifting a watch or “time” to me and Ive since given my Dad a Speedmaster and my sister a Cartier Tank. It’s a lovely sentiment and it makes me happy knowing that once in awhile when they glance at the time they may think of me. Just a perfect gift for someone you love 🙏

Interstellar is my favorite movie and after rewatching it at the end of 2022 I decided to purchase this watch. My first and favorite Swiss watch. For me it’s a symbol of the same year as a lot of positive (some negative) life events had occurred. I highly recommend this watch…great review!

I own the original 42mm release and it's one of my favorite pieces. Excellent move by Hamilton to pay attention to the feedback and make the smaller version available however.. I do agree with your suggestion regarding the case back. I don't mind the display but a nod to Hugo's iconic scene would make this watch God tier! 😁❤

Theres no doubt that a Khaki should adorn every watch collection. They are just so classy in their simplicity and I have always adored the fine pointed ends to the cathederal hands in the same way the Alpinist does. Hamilton are such a great brand and have something in their catalogue for every taste. I personally own and love both Interstellar watches and am pleased that in releasing the Murph in a smaller size more people get to enjoy it. Makes you wonder why they didn't release it at 40 or 39mm in the first place. Even though it would not have been strictly movie accurate it would likely have suited everyone. Great review as always.

I like every change they've made. I think with the original one 42mm would have been okaaaaay, but the real problem was the 50+mm lug to lug, which is a chronic issue for Hamilton's case designs. They gotta take a leaf out of Seiko's book there I think.

I own the Cooper watch (first swiss watch I ever owned) and I bought the original Murph for my daughter when she went away to college - this watch is just striking, every time she sends me a watch-check pic (it's also her way of letting me know the watch reminds her we are connected across space and time) I wish I owned it. I do think there is a market for the 38mm Murph. My only complaint is that there is no ARC on this watch, and for the money and for how attractive this dial is, it really deserves one. I'm happy they have corrected this with the release of the 38mm, wish it was also on the 42. this watch indeed looks better on the wrist than in any photos

I have been so interested in this release from Hamilton. Thank you for the review, TGV! I agree entirely with your observation regarding the case back. Given the special connection to the movie and the utilitarian movement finishing, engraved steel would have done quite nicely. With respect to the movement, while it doesn't retain the romance of having been handled by a watchmaker, it seems to be, like the movie itself, a bridge between past and future, It retains most of the original architecture of the base ETA while being robotically assembled with non traditional materials where possible. Finally, I had to laugh and call my wife to watch the intro for both, our dear Hugo, and because I just ordered a Fluco from Holben's for my vintage Benrus Series #3031, albeit a different strap! Thank you for continuing to produce this wonderful content.

Fantastic video, TGV! Had no idea Hugo received his astronaut qualifications! My son is quite impressed. Bringing the Jurassic and modern eras full circle!😂 Love that Seamaster! Went to the Omega AD recently and, to say they have evolved is an understatement. Hamilton has always intrigued me with their position on cinematic timepieces. I have always appreciated how they are very honest and open with how their pieces are used in film so that fans can have pieces of their favorite cinematic adventures. The Murph looks quite attractive. I think the new size really give the largest audience a great chance at enjoying the piece. I can already see how the new passion and trend to smaller pieces is already cycling through the process. Trend is introduced, trend gains steam and becomes newest fad, becomes de rigueur, looses trendiness, and then will fade. 36mm is simply too small for me, I am not a huge guy. 7” wrist. I think 38 or 39 mm fits the largest group of people, regardless of gender. It seems to be universal. I can’t stand trendiness and chasing fads like skinny jeans, high waisted to low cut pants, holes in your pants, and hairstyles that are worn intentionally to shock or point out how different or unique one is (which since it is a fad, shows simply that one is trying to join a crowd - “look I am different! Just like you”). I am really tired of every watch being criticized for not being small. Some are larger and some are smaller, but I don’t think that a watch should be criticized anymore regarding size. Of course one can go to extremes either way, but finding the perfect sized watch is part of the thrill of the hunt and part of the journey. Let the watches be what they are size wise and enjoy hunting the ones that YOU love. Excellent video, as always, TGV! Thank you as always for such an entertaining and enjoyable episode. Hope you and yours are well! Onward and upward, my friend!

Thank you TGV for such a great and interesting Hamilton review!! I personally own the Hamilton Spirit of Liberty which is the more expensive version of this h-10 movement that can be regulated and is decorated to a higher level. The only negative I see with mine is the Hamilton watch is definitely slightly big. Mine is unfortunately 42mm. I would definitely prefer it in 40mm to even 38mm to have a more classic look. Another very high quality video..thanks. I have the 38MM Khaki Field with the H10 movement. Mine is extremely accurate. When worn daily it hold somewhere around 1.5 seconds a day slow. Not sure what parts are plastic in it. My experience with regulating a watch is mixed. I've been successful with two Vostok watches, getting them very accurate. Not so much with the newer Seiko Alpinist....the reguating level was so tight I slipped off it and banged into the hairspring, causing the watch to become "bipolar". sent it back to Seiko and they fixed with full confession (was only about 3 weeks old direct from Seiko) and whatever they did didn't take long but cost me about 300 bucks total. So I'm a little gun shy about regulating anything more expensive than a Vostok these days, with or without a laser. This Murph looks a lot like the Khaki Field with a new dial and hands. Is the date still there under the dial?

About the movement, one thing you can’t ignore is that it is very, very accurate, on the timegrapher, my murph is at 0s/day, the cooper at -2s/day, being worn, both watches deviated less than 2s on a 4 day period, I don’t have any mechanical watches as accurate as these ones. So yes you can’t adjust them yourself, by you also don’t really need to.

Already have one in the wrist and it has become one of the most worn pieces in my collection. As far as the movement goes, I think at this price point is completely OK. Mine is running -3s per day but your regulation remark is of course, correct. To be fair however, there are versions of this movement which uses plastic/synthetic parts (ETA C07.111 I think) and Hamilton does not use those. So thumbs up for Hamilton. I also agree with you on the solid case back. We should probably keep in mind this watch was meant to appeal to masses, perhaps first time watch buyers, who love to see the movement through case, even as utalitarian visually as it is.

Again a great video and review from The Gentry. Thanks. I’ve really considered this watch because of its origins and size but decided against it after seeing the used lume and especially the color. As Gentry I prefer a more clearer dial and would have preferred white on black. But then again, the beige color probably fits the dust of the film Interstellar better. But I’m still very interested and may still step in with further versions.

Interstellar is a very special movie for me. One of my favourites. It reminds me of my dad. He loved it. I will buy, someday, the pilot day date Hamilton watch Cooper used. Thanks for the review TGV. Best watch reviewer on KZfaq

Hi Hugo, big fan of the channel. Quick question. Have you ever made a video about your first watch(es)? I would love to learn how it all began for you. Love your work, best wishes from Mexico.

It's interesting hearing about how big the original 42mm was; I've heard people describe it as a "movie prop" to show up easily on camera. Meanwhile it's based on the Pioneer which was 45mm. Aviator watches can be big! 42mm is probably the perfect size, but the trend is to go smaller, so the 38mm makes sense. It's great that there are options for people with smaller wrists.

Everyone and their dog has reviewed this watch by this point, but you are the master. Great job as always. Although a nice watch, I’d rather have the 38mm Oris Big Crown Pointer Date.

The aesthetics are similar to the Murph though the Big Crown Pointer is several thousand more!

A really great walk though of the watch TGV. The 'Murph' as per the film was an old watch, the lume had gone yellow, the hands looked old and possibly a tad corroded and it was a bit scratched up. The original release (I have that one) produced as a 1:1 had as some might say 'quirks'. It's big by todays standards but the one in the film is big. The lugs are long, yes they are but they taper down a lot so don't take all measurements as how the watch will wear on the wrist. There was no AR coating on the original release, there was no AR coating on the film version, remember it's an old watch. Anyway on my wrist it fitted OK and I loved the old watch vibe made with modern tech and assembly. Having seen the new 38 at the AD in the flesh I think Hamilton did a great job, it looks just like mine but has been on a hotter spin cycle than ideal. The strap does take a bit to break in but once it has it's fine. Should Hamilton make one with white markers and lume? Definitely yes. Should they add more or better AR? Yes. Should they do an 'option' for a 2824? It would be nice but probably cost more. The thing is that once all these changes have been done is the watch still a 'Murph'? Probably not but I would consider getting one if I could justify it.

Great review. I like the khaki colour more than white. I think calling it “faux patina” isn’t accurate though…. it’s just a colour, not pretending to be distressed/aged as if it were an older watch. But, we all have our different tastes, which is what makes Watch design so interesting! Thank you for the content!
