I spent my formative years in Ludington. It was a magical place and time. We used to call Stearns Park (the beach park) "G-Park" or G for short. It was short for Giraffe park because that's where we went to "neck." The sculpture garden reminds me of my band teacher and I wonder if his memory had some influence in its construction. He was one of the most legendary people I have ever met. He was a frogman in the Pacific Theatre during the Second World War, and heard the most horrible sounds, yet when the war ended, he dedicated the rest of his life making beautiful, uplifting music. He required us to march in the Memorial Day Parade, but we Wanted to march for him! He was all about paying tribute for the Veterans. We met so many heroes at the Ceremony at Stearns, some from the First World War. I've not made it back to Ludington in decades, but if i ever do, a visit to his memorial is first on my list.

🙋‍♀️Hello Russ! Beautiful blue sky. Beautiful blue lake. I loved the bronze picture with the ship wheels on either end. The bronze fish was neat too! So clean looking along the beach with the huge white stones as border. Love the inviting feeling the benches & picnic tables give. Exciting seeing that huge Ferry come in. Loved hearing the horn blow. Even this town omits a peaceful quiet feeling. Enjoy the rest of your evening. Hope you get a good nights rest.

Something you do that I really like is you pause your camera, just for a split second, on 'storyboards' and plaques so we can freeze-frame and read them if we choose. This was how I learned today that salmon were transplanted from the West Coast to Michigan and thrived there, adding a lot to the local economy (and local barbecue grills too, I'm sure). And that horses had to pull barges of lumber into the water to get to big ships that couldn't come closer because of the shallow water. Plus the heroic story of a Medal of Honor recipient (it would make a good movie!) Thanks!

Russ, if you like Michigan just wait until the fall colors on the leaves come in. It happens mid September to late October depending upon what of the state. The earliest it starts is in the UP and the latest it at the state border for Ohio and Indiana. The colors are spectacular. You should come back sometime during the fall season. Everything is less crowded because kids tend to back in school.

If you decide to come back, you missed the bulk of the sculpture park, down by where the Badger docks. And the City Park is at the west end of the downtown district, on the north side of the Avenue just past where the boulevard starts. Be surenalso to take some of the trails at the State Park if you can. There are *MILES* of gorgeous trails and another lighthouse.

The SS Badger is the last of the historic coal fired car ferries still in service. Called car ferries because they were designed to carry railroad cars! I rode it as a young girl to Milwaukee to visit cousins when it was new. The State gave it a special permit to continue burning coal because it would have cost too much to convert to diesel.

My family and I took the badger over to Wisconsin. We drove up to Dorr county. That's a charming place to visit! On our way back to ludington We went down to the theater room and the waves made me feel sick so we went outside on the deck and the smell of that coal kinda made me feel more sick. But it was a nice experience anyway. 🙂

Russ, the ship travels at a top speed and makes the 68-nautical-mile (78 mi; 126 km) trip three times daily from each side of the lake during the peak of its operational schedule. Lake Express is able to cross the lake in two and a half hours.

Russ, the sculpture park is waterfront park , east of the lake Michigan along filer rd at rath/roberts area. About 1/2 mile east of where you saw the ferry come in. Today the park hosted a free Jimmy Buffet tribute band concert, drew about 2800. That's also one of the best spots to watch the ferry come and gol I hope you had a chance to visit the lake Michigan beach house at the state park and climb to the upstairs part.
