I met Peter Cushing at a book-signing many years ago. They say never meet your heroes, but I’m happy to report he was just as gracious as you’d hope. I didn’t even buy his book, but got him to sign a vhs tape of Dracula I had recorded off the tv, which he did, and called me ‘dear boy’. I get a tear in my eye just thinking of it.

If my English lessons did at least any good it was enabling me to watch Peter Cushing films in the original language. Though we have developed a reasonable dubbing culture with some excellent voice-actors here, there is no proper way to replace a voice like his. So much emotion, so much weight lies within it. Sometimes it seems to add up to sixty percent of the character itself... a feast for ears and heart. The same goes for Sir Christopher, of course, but fortunately the multilingual Lee was able and enjoyed to deliver a lot of his german dubbings himself.

At the risk of sounding redundant, Peter Cushing was SUCH an incredible actor. He could do anything. I think it’s a damn shame he didn’t enjoy a bit more mainstream recognition during his own lifetime. I hope he knew how much he was loved, how beloved his work was. I think my own personal favorite line is his ice cold delivery of; “I’ll get it.” In response to Paul’s question of where he intends to get the brain for his experiment.

@@johnathonhaney8291 What I had read was that he was generally game for his characters' stunts (and in some cases helped choreograph) but was rarely allowed to execute anything more complicated than a spot of running and grappling. You can sometimes see him clutch his side during/after the "spot of running" onscreen, but I don't know whether that's supposed to be in or out of character. Think of a Theodore Roosevelt or a JFK, men with legit health issues who tried to be athletic anyway.

An amazing actor. I was first introduced to him as Tarkin, but came to love him as a child in his two roles as Doctor Who against the Daleks. Now I'm just thankful for the plethora of amazing dedicated performances he gave to so many characters. To me, Tarkin is just a nice footnote to a much larger outstanding career of outstanding roles. More than that, the examples of just how much of a sincere, caring and genuinely compassionate human being he was shines through brighter than his achievements. I remember once reading that after his wife passed, he said he was simply 'killing time'. Those use of words carries so much weight, speaks volumes about his relationship to his soul mate.

This is an excellent upload. I truly feel the hammer frankenstein series was far better than universals, which was great. Big the character developments and motivations in this series I think are under appreciated, not just by horror critics but film critics in general. And Peter Cushing, like Boris Karloff, not just underrated but ctiminally unappreciated. His restraint, sly facial expressions, the conveyance of genius and madness, it’s all brilliant. Seriously, Brando, bogart, Nicholson, anybody, Sean penny if Daniel day lewis, thrr egg y have nothing on Cushing. Same with Boris. Just because it’s horror the quality and depth isn’t appreciated for the brilliance of the performances.

I agree. Even when he was bringing his B-game in some underwritten role like Star Wars or 7 Golden Vampires, he was better than most. When he had a role that actually required something of him, he usually delivered in spades. Shame the mainstream cinema of that era had so little use for a man of that physical type and general style.

I remember watching Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell on the USA Network's Saturday Nightmares, and even then, I noted the change in tone Shane Briant had when he said "Oh my God" when he, I think, finds out Frankenstien plans to have the mute girl mate with the Creature from when he was sentenced to the asylum. Great moments you didn't mention? Elizabeth and Paul denying Frankenstein's story at the end of Curse of Frankenstein. The Baron returning home in The Evil of Frankenstein to find the mayor sleeping in his clothes-in his bed. James Bernard's score for Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed (especially against the credits, appearing uncharacteristically at the end of the film). This video almost tempts to buy a copy of Frankenstein Created Woman, which I haven't seen in years. I do remember thinking it was ambiguous whether the Creature was being guided by her dead friend or she was just imagining him talking to her (kind of like the ambiguity in Hands of the Ripper).

Lee's monster was a work of genius; he moved like patchwork man, made mismatch pieces. Now that you have all the movies together, I can see some of flaws that maybe most people missed. Instead of going back and looking at the earlier films, and progressing the costumes and back ground from 1860 onward, they seemed to jump around all over the 19th century. THE EVIL OF FRANKENSTEIN ( my fav in the series) looks like it takes place around the 1890's. While FRANKENSTEIN AND THE MONSTER FROM HELL looks like it takes place in the 1820's. I also feel that Lovecraft's Herbert West RE-ANIMATOR was a strong influence on Hammer's Baron Frankenstein. The story of a scientist that is consumed by his work and sees his goal through tunnel vision which justify all this acts, no matter how brutal or insane they are.

Peter Cushing is Frankenstein, others have tried but none can come up to the mark. I have watched these films time and time again and never grow tired of them. I have learnt one thing watching this post, why the rape scene of Anna was put in. I feel that was a mistake. Frankenstein was to driven in his objective , that would not have crossed his mind. Check his attitude to his fiancee in Curse of, he's not really interested in the marriage. Yes he could be an evil bastard but only when his work was in jepardy. Off topic I finally finished watching all your reviews from 22 August 2012, it took me 3 weeks.

Both Cushing and Veronica Carlson were against the out-of-character rape scene in "Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed". But the producers were doggedly inflexible. It was the post-1965 era already, the sxual revolution started in '66. & things fell apart, & rot away, & so was too Frankenstein's single-mad-mindedness. & that scene corrupts an otherwise flawless movie. So that the producers could keep up with the spirit of the times. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Good old Thorley Walters played to perfection the ill-tempered flu-plagued policeman in FMBD.

I think one moment that wasn't mentioned is Frankenstein's brain/eyes/arm table from "The Revenge of Frankenstein", which was later copied in "Victor Frankenstein".

Ooh! Patrick Troughton! I love seeing Doctor Who actors elsewhere, especially one of the Doctors themselves! I also see that the actor that played at least 2 Doctor Who stories (The Mutants and The Deadly Assassin) played in Frankenstein must be destroyed!

Dear Peter Cushing really owned the character of Baron Victor Frankenstein, Doctor of Medicine, Law and Physics. So why did they give him a wig that makes him look like Widow Twankey in Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell?

I may be wrong but it seems to me that Hammer was trying to match the new wave of horror movies that relied on more graphic sex and violence than story. Coupled with the fact the classic monsters had been done to death, and seemed old and out of place in the the "modern era", Great job on the video,

I've only seen the first film in this franchise, but from what I've heard, Cushing's Frankenstein seems to be like a horror version of Walter White. Can anyone confirm if this is indeed the case?

I always thought as a whole the Hammer Frankenstein series was better than the Dracula series. I enjoyed The Baron's changing additude with each film. From being so dedicated above anything else to outright skulduggery to concluding pitiful. Peter Cushing not only created monsters. He created Hammer as well. The stories were always entertaining from frightening monstrosities to troubled handsome, beautiful creations. It was sheer genius to focus the attention, adventures on creator rather then the creation. Cushing's emotions changed with each film. From a gentleman excusing himself in a woman's bedroom in Evil to being a womanizer and rapist in Destroyed. Note his distaste growing hatred of women and rightfully so. If u look hard each film, each experiment was conflicted, ruined by a woman. He was right when he said angry out loud in Revenge Confound these interfering women. Naturally I'm dismissing Horror. A one line joke movie to say the least. Long live Hammer in our hearts and memories.

I think you’re seeing Frankenstein through a judgemental eye rather an analytical one. Calling him sadistic would imply he commits these acts out of pure enjoyment for them alone when they are done for a pure scientific reason, however specious it may be. And to judge him on a moral basis would be thinking he shares the same morality as the rest of society. Perhaps a conventional one, but in your analysis this is seen as strictly negative when it might be argued that his experiments may ultimately result in a potential application against human sickness or even mortality. Of course this depends on which side one falls on in regards to the utilitarianism idea of “needs of many/needs of few”, but still this makes his character far more interesting and worthy of a deeper analysis than he is given. I had to add there are a few exceptions to this, but they seem to be thrown in for shock value by filmmakers (like rape), so not really feeling like a part of the character.

A cute attempt to rewrite history that fails rather miserably. Your argument smacks too much of the face-saving excuses spelled out in Dostoevsky's Crime And Punishment. Here's the truth about Baron Frankenstein: he does what he does because he can and because he wants to. With very few (possible) exceptions, the rest of the human race doesn't matter to him, not even in the abstract. Ironically, I think that he would agree with me.

That might work for Evil of Frankenstein which is essentially a reboot and is the only film where he shows anything like concern for ordinary humans (mostly Hans and the mute girl). Maybe Created Woman as well. But in the rest of the series, people are just so much flesh to him to be used in his experiments or to serve him in other ways. There are Cushing quotes (I assume from interviews for one of the Lighter and Softer movies in the franchise) where he makes something like the case you do here for a less evil Baron, but the quotes read to me as kind of tongue in cheek.

Uh in that film, "Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed" he RAPES that woman before he kills her! He was pure evil in that film - and I hated it because of that. I loved the Baron. I've read that Cushing himself hated that particular scene too. Whoops....I should've watched the whole video before making that comment...my mistake.

Hammer franchises had too many reboots they never seemed to bring the story to a satisfying conclusion. Universal had the same issue (with the only exception of The Creature from the Black Lagoon).
