This week I go Wobo on the Hammer and Needle and see if it makes any real difference and if it is something that you should pay attention to in DayZ.

Where the needle and hammer really come to being noticeably important is if you have the builder buff you can unlock code dials faster. You'll cycle through the dials MUCH quicker

You used to be able to repair damaged and badly damaged items back to pristine with a maxed left side skill.... I've been told it no longer works.... the skill has been broken for years in different ways it seems, used to reset if you left the server and came back, now it just doesn't repair anymore, garbage 😅

@@rucifail what I do know is your right about the cycling locks thing but when you try max the needle and thread it makes nearly everything you craft pristine

Maxed out needle increase all repairings speed by 50% (twice faster). Default repair speed is 4s for clothes and 6s for weapons, with max out needle it's 2s and 3s repair time. For those who asking "can you repair items to pristine with max needle" - No you can't.

I cleaned several hundred guns today and not one went back to pristine, even with full needle buff.

From my old research, the further towards the hammer, the more tree logs you'd get from chopping and if I can recall (it was forever ago), you'd get more planks from sawn trees. The further towards the needle, well, maxed out, once there it would be the only way in vanilla to repair your items to pristine instead of just worn like usual. Problem is, and I've had people say it's now "fixed", is that if you left the server, or the server went down for restart, when you came back in on the same character, all that work getting the skill maxed out either way would completely reset to the center, making it completely useless..... I've been told it actually works now, I have zero gumption to check though 😅 I've also been told you can't get items to pristine anymore with a maxed needle skill(precision vs blunt or something IDK lol), so if that's true, just like it resetting, if it doesn't work who cares, the devs refuse to actually improve the game besides changing can opening sounds anymore it seems 🤷‍♂️ Edit: I commented before you left the server and came back in.... well it seems at least the resetting of the skills from logging or server reset has been fixed, finally.... now can you still repair to pristine if maxed out to the left is the question 🤔 Oh, you could also open up dial locks faster if to the left, which actually sucked because it went too fast, the devs implementing either 9V Code Locks or at least a way to set the dial lock once and have it automatically open without having to scroll through every single dial would be a start....dial locks absolutely are ridiculously stupid and the worst implementation in base locking game history 🙄😅

also from some reading but not doing, the hammer and needle icon indicates also your repair skill, so sharpening an axe will repair to pristine condition if your skill or soft skill is at the hammer end and this is the same for repairing clothes when your skill is at the needle end. but who lives that long in DayZ

I believe this test should have been done by measuring how many circles are completed and not how many swings. The swings are just a visual representation and can sometimes change depending on the tree. Circles completed (1 log per circle) is what damages the axe.

The timing I used was based on the circles. I just also counted the swings. The trees in that area are all almost identical, which is why I did the test there. I think you're right about completed circles damaging the item, I tried seeing if I could cut a tree down by hitting it with only one swing, I must have hit one tree about 20 times before I got bored 😄

as soon as the circle is full you can right click and cancel the animation, saves a lot of time chopping trees or bandaging rather than waiting for the animation to finish

Great Idea for a video 😁. I feel bad now but someone had to talk about that ridiculous icon. However. Now that you have done that I want to see if your stamina will deplete quicker and regenerate slower now that you have largely deforested the map and there has to be less oxygen available.

The hammer = strength (Melee, working and higher HP) Needle = Dexterity Lower HP, more speed/Stamina

I ended up testing a full hammer and then a full needle in the next video. There is no difference in stamina at either end.

I've had a character who was so close to the needle and thread. and the only thing I've notice while being there was you repair items and skin animals quicker and use less of whatever you're repairing with, I was never able to see if I can repair things to pristine. and also more meat when you skin and quarter animals.

I didn't test more meat, but full needle doesn't repair to pristine in my testing.

I ended up doing a follow up where gut the full buff. The only advantage was for cracking codelocks. I went full needle too but that was pointless.

Good tip! I did think about fishing but I didn't end up testing everything. I ended up making a follow up video to this one where I get a full hammer or builder buff, I then manage to get a full needle or crafting buff and test out a heap more things.

Guys easiest way to get the “hammer” skill full is to build things or saw planks, cutting down trees is the slowest way to increase the skill.. Also if you do too much repairing or bandaging between building/ sawing planks it resets your skill.. Learnt this through trial and error on my private server over a couple years. The soft skills are so slept on by the devs they could do so much with it and make it so much better but they don’t as with most great things in this game.

@@rucifail If I remember correctly it was hunting and skinning animals - wolves were my goto but never managed to get it all the way full to test the pristine repair that everyone goes on about as it’s so easy to reset the bar.. I wish the Devs worked more on soft skills and your character could level everything up rather than just one aspect… As it would definitely make people more cautious to Kill/ Be killed..

I agree, it's almost pointless even if you put the effort in. The only thing I would use the builder/hammer buff for would be cracking code locks on official servers. Otherwise I plan on ignoring it from here on in.

In the next vid I put on drenched clothing and keep the buff, but I didn't go swimming or get cold... hmm not sure if I want to test again or not...

@@rucifail I did multiple times, i am pretty sure its the coldness then. I often simply forgot to check the meter, but even whilst continued crafting and building it just resets then. 😒

You could have gone full on and got the bar all the way to the end to test it out then but it's going to be a massive waste of time. It would have been about 20 hours of work to knock a few chops off in the long run.

It's actually 1sec, not 20 hours. You literally have diag menu in game that allow you test everything

From what I know yes you get one extra log once you've reach half way to builder buff and I think 2 logs once your full builder buff

@@NickMemphis136yeah you used to get an extra log, then an extra 2 logs (depending on tree obviously, talking about the best possible tree chopped), and then subsequently, the further to the left used to be the only way to repair items to pristine in vanilla, I've been told that doesn't work anymore, and I'll be damned if I test it again 😅 It took me building an entire double stacked fence around the entire front of Novodmitrovsk City Hall courtyard, along with every door covered in the Hall and surrounding entrance points, watchtowers on either side of each of the 6 gates we had in the courtyard, and 4 watchtowers on the top of the building, plus an entire watchtower collection on the first floor of the roof with each touching each other for a double floor type deal around the perimeter of the roof.....it took me and one friend hours and days and hours.... and nobody ever came up there afterwards except me, him, and our other buddy on a server that always had at least 30 players on it.... I seen someone once looting like shops down the street from the roof where i was growing my bud for profit, but they never even seen our base 😅
