Very cool. Thanks. I’ve a project in the works to create an AllStarLink node. At first I thought a hotspot would be like that but in reality they are different animals. The hotspot is a truly personal node and does digital conversion. The AllStarLink node can be a local access point or even something of a repeater, but is analog based. The price is right.

Please do more of these videos that are succinct and to the point! I don't have time to sit through 1.5 hours of streaming to find a small nugget of info most times. I’ve had mine for a few days. Here are my observations thus far: The touch screen is pointless, there’s nothing programmed to use it except a button to dim the screen, which doesn’t actually do anything. You can’t set it on it’s end so that the screen is facing forward due to where the usb ports are located. I uploaded a modified TFT file to rotate the screen. (hint: the display has a SD card reader to update it’s firmware) The time server doesn’t run, thus when you power it on the time is wrong, even after updating to the latest firmware. I added a command to set the clock at boot time. I’m still satisfied with my purchase, though the next one I buy will be one without a screen, or with just a simple OLED display. Smaller and cheaper.

Josh, nice vid... Pi-star is Pi-star. In my opinion, paying $239 for this hotspot, compared to $95 for a Pi-star jumbospot, seems like a steep price to pay for the enhanced display.

I had two Zumspots. My only problem with them was that the power cable is on the bottom of the unit. So they are hard to stand up. The manufacturers should allow one to flip the screen orientation without having to open the case to get to an internal SD card that controls the screen.
@banihex
@banihex 3 жыл бұрын
The power cable placement is utterly idiotic with no way to rotate the display. HRO told me hundreds of people are satisfied without "my issue." Sorry, that is a lame response. Have you found a solution to display the device and actually use the screen? I may mount it on a wall. I have only bought my equipment from HRO over the years, I think that will change now.

did they mount the display inside the case with the protective wrap still on? Also, doesn't the ZUM do a default WI-FI service like most of the MMDVM HS Hats? Kind of a bummer you have to pull the SD-Card and "write" your Wi-Fi data, Those 'resistive' displays are not all the touch sensitive (Nextion). You'd have to code up the 'hot spots' on the displays landscape to mach the events funciton (typical touch method). Nice having the larger display and the data it presents. Lots of "custom" topologies available (github & FB group)

I am a bit surprised that it’s running on a Pi Zero. The previous version was running on a Pi 3 so you could plug into Ethernet directly. Don’t forget that you will need to update the nextion firmware to get those beta features to work. It’s not part of the Zum or Pi-star firmware packages.

Since you seem to have a relationship with more than one hotspot that uses a RasPi Zero W, which is currently unavailable, I was wondering if you could ask the manufacturers of these kits if they can be made to work with the Banana Pi BPI M2 Zero, which has the same form factor and header as the Pi W, but slightly different SoC. I am pretty terrible with Linux, so I am not a good candidate to try to make things work. From what I gather, forums are saying the RasPi has a somewhat unique way of loading the kernel, which may affect how (formfactor) "clone" boards may work as direct substitutes, and a Raspian image will probably not just work on one of these boards. If they can be made to work, then some of these hotspots can be put together for $50-70 bucks which would be great, especially when the availability of the Pi W keeps sliding further away.
