My experience with stone grinders of the substantial kind is that they take a lot of energy (mine) to operate. They not only move tables around the floor but they flex surfaces and glued joints. You might consider bolting your table to the floor so your mate will not have to be a counterweight (I thought that was a great pun!) Bits of basalt grit will always get in your grindings; the stones wear against themselves as well as against the grain. I switched to steel burrs to avoid that issue, even if the flour was not quite so fine. My baking still came out well.

I have an ancient Back to Basics grain mill that I bought maybe 30 years ago. In don't eat wheat anymore but I do have things I need to grind. I hung onto it in case I am without electricity. I love your grain mill but I will wait to see if I need it. Again, I love your videos and the off grid series. You never know when the zombies are going to strike.

I remember my mom making a sweet bread that required rice flour, what She did is soak the rice for some time (don't remember how long), then put it ouside in flat sheets like cookie sheets to air dry a bit then process in the hand crank grinder like yours, the flour was so fine like from a commercial meal.

Anywhooooo...GREAT video as always. I REALLY want this grinder and it WILL be my next bigger purchase. Seeing the accessories really helped as well. Especially for someone like me who has some disabilities (that I refuse to let get in my way!! 😉). Very helpful. The "counter weight" lol issue was especially helpful. Thanks for sharing. Every time it started getting difficult to crank, it was my job to sit on the cold towels he had placed on top. Brrr.... it was cold but the homemade ice cream sure was delicious! That is very cool. I used to see the adds for the grain mills in Mother Earth News. Always thought it would be cool to do that, but wow $$$!!! I watched vids on YT about growing your own wheat and threshing and winnowing. It's so cool to learn how they used to do those things that most of us take for granted. I have also been thinking a lot lately about manual powered accessories. I think lots of people buy food processing equiptment only to realize that with no electricity, you are dead in the water. Cool vid. The bloopers are always funny. LOL

I use my Magic Bullet to grind my wheat berries, I can control the graininess by allowing the wheat to be ground repeatedly but usually I can get the right consistancy on the first try. I bought it for 70$. I have begun using einkorn flour for everything and I have even successfully adapted my recicipes for high altitude which helps so much.

That's a nice grinder. As far as grinders go, you can definately do a lot worse than the WM Jr. As for the table moving around while you grind, you could try mounting 4 strong hooks in the underside of the table at the corners and sling a large bag, like an old army duffle bag, from the hooks. Pack the bag with something heavy, or use it for some 'out of the way' storage space, and hopefully that will keep the table weighted down and free up Jeremy for things more important than being a counterweight :) . If you want to go back to using the table as a table again, just unhook the bag and you are set. Hope that helps.

Just curious - why gluten free ? In my experience, only a small fraction of the people who buy/make gluten free products actually have do have confirmed celiac disease (which my nephew has) ... most people just blindly finger gluten as the cause of their gastric issues because theyre either unable or unmotivated to invest the time and legwork to pin down and identify the precise cause of their issues ... which can involve keeping a detailed food diary, going to an allergist and getting several prick tests done, and possibly a swab for genetic testing. I helped my wife thru the process, and pinned her issues down to 3 triggers: kelp, olive oil, and uncooked dairy products made from milk with type A1 caesin. After eliminating those triggers, and switching to A2 milk, we were able to resume wheat with zero issues, and im happily making sourdough with organic non-gmo flour.

Research something called 'molecular mimicry'. I do not have celiac disease but I do have Hashimoto's autoimmune disease and had to go gluten-free due to molecular mimicry. The protein in gluten is almost identical to and mimics the protein in thyroid tissue, so when I eat gluten, my body attacks my thyroid. Celiac disease is only one of MANY diseases gluten effects.

@@kimwilliams6674 Ah, interesting. I'd heard of hashimotos, but was unaware of the specifics. Thx for taking the time to elaborate. FWIW, I had a total thyroidectomy in 2008 (cancer), followed by RAI Ablation.

@@RovingPunster You're welcome! Since my DX 2 years ago I have learned a lot about the damage gluten can do by causing a leaky gut. If you do some research on zonulin (a protein that regulates intestinal permeability) you will see how gluten can be quite harmful. I'm so sorry to hear about your cancer. Three months after my Hashi's DX 2 years ago I was DX with stage one breast cancer (the 2 often go hand in hand), so I have walked/am walking that road myself. I am choosing to heal holistically after a simple lumpectomy and diet/nutrition is a huge part of that. I assume since it has been 14 years since your thyroidectomy that you are doing well? I certainly hope so and wish you well!

@@kimwilliams6674 Yeah, doin good. The few cancer cells that survived I keep imprisoned in a small mole on my elbow, using the power of my evil eye. I call the mole my "Isle of Elba" (rimshot). Sorry, obligatory pun. I have a handle to maintain. 😋

Great job! I've wanted to get a mill, but am not that far into the whole ordeal yet. Baby steps. For me. This is a lifestyle change I'm doing at a snails pace because there are 4 other people involved who I have to sell it to...
