One behavior that is often misunderstood in children is hand flapping. Many people do not understand hand flapping, why hand flapping occurs, if hand flapping should be stopped and even more commonly, if hand flapping is a sign of autism.
In this video, I will be discussing and answering some very common questions related to hand flapping as well as the link between hand flapping and autism.
If after watching this video, you feel like your child may be showing signs of autism or you feel their hand flapping is atypical, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your pediatrician for further assistance.

Ya know the behaviours of autistic people aren’t the autism, they’re signals of distress or efforts to calm down because their senses are overwhelmed. Everyone behaves this way when in extreme overwhelm, the difference is it’s extremely rare for most people to feel this level of heightened emotion.

Thank you very much I have been wondering about this with my 2 year old. He doesn’t do it much at all, but when he’s excited sometimes. He has wonderful eye contact, responds to his name and doesn’t do the typical autistic things that are present with autism. He has a lot of sensory issues and I’ve recently been told that he has AFRID because his eating is so bad.

I just want to say I enjoy your channel. I’m still waiting on my sons appointment which is next month and I’m still confused on what he have . He was born at 30 weeks pregnant, he talks , he laughs , he points he’s extremely smart with words, colors, sounding out letters but, he doesn’t respond to his name, he doesn’t understand when you say hi to say it back, he eats really good but won’t use a spoon. His hearing has been checked so he has tubes now and still won’t respond to his name unless I snap my fingers and have the television off. He is very fixated on whatever he’s doing watching tv, playing with toys etc . I pray I get answers soon he’s starting to have meltdowns . His main thing is having a hard time communicating he can’t tell me what he wants so he cries. That’s how he communicates. Mom help me he says I feel so bad 😢

Your audio quality is suffering a lot because of the stone acoustics in the space where you recorded this video. You may want to change location or place some blankets on the floor and cardboard on the walls to the left right and rear of the microphone. I’m assuming your mic was far away from you. If you modify your microphone to a lapel mic you will likely be able to dramatically reduce the high frequency noise from the background which is actually kind of painful for a lot of people to listen to. Thank you for your content please take this in the spirit inwhich it was givin which one of support and interest in your success.

My three year old does a lot of finger movement and it does seem to be when he's excited about something, a movie or acting out a show or something even when we went to the Christmas inn place and saw Santa he'll do it while he acts it out. He's very verbal he uses words in sentences in the right context and everything we worry about his finger movements and some of his actions he seams to like meeting new friends at the new church Sunday school class but again it's his stimming.

It could just be the way his body regulates itself. As long as it is not harming others or interrupting his daily routines it is ok. As his sensory system matures or if provided with other types of sensory input sometimes it will decrease but sounds like he does it as a reaction when excited.

Hi ! I really hope I get an answer from you … I have a 9 month old baby boy , he’s flapping his hands quite often, sometimes is just one hand sometimes he flaps with both and touching his palms together. He does it when he’s happy and if I feed him and sometimes when he wakes up . I’m freaking out. He’s eye contact is really good , looking for people, when we are outside he’s paying attention to everything around him, cars , birds , he even smiles back at people and kids but he’s a bit reluctant and shy .When walking with the stroller he like to pick up leaves and flowers. He’s looking at us when we are calling his name , if I say look for the dog he does it . We play peak a boo . But he doesn’t babble yet like dada or mama . He crawls and pulls himself to stand . I didn’t see him focusing playing in a specific way with a toy with anyway he’s too young. He’s teething because he’s chewing everything and drooling so I know he’s irritated but that flapping is worrying me a lot . I can’t sleep anymore

Hello! If this is of serious concern the best thing I can recommend is to see your pediatrician or ask about getting your child's development assessed through Early Intervention (if your state/place of residence offers that service). Flapping alone is not an indicator of anything but a professional can do a full assessment to make sure all is well with other areas of development.

My son is 4 and we've noticed an unusual behavior for the last year or two. When he gets really engaged in something like his iPad, throwing sticks in a campfire, putting small pieces of paper in front of the robo Vacuum, dropping a ball down a lego slide, etc. he puts both hands up in the "stick em up" position and sometimes his body clenches up and he shakes out of excitement. Haven't really noticed him flapping his hands at the wrists but he does seem to strain his hands wide open sometimes when he does this in anticipation of whatever he's engaged in. He's always been a happy, smiling baby and he's very intelligent, especially with mathematics; I call him my little Rainman, LOL. He just got into a heated argument with my wife that she was wrong that 10+2=12 because 6+6=12 and he didn't understand you could get 12 any other way than 6+6. So there is a little stubbornness in him and his way of thinking. He's always been very social and makes friends with everyone. He started talking at a reasonable age but doesn't have very good pronunciation although it has gotten much better easier to comprehend. There is a family history of ADHD and I'm nearly certain his sister and him got it from me because neither can sit still for more than a few seconds. Does this sound potentially like Asperger's or could it just be a heightened hyper-activity disorder associated with ADHD?
@AshtheOT
@AshtheOT Жыл бұрын
Hi there! Thanks for sharing. Based off of the description you told me it could honestly go either way (or maybe even just some sensory processing challenges). The characteristics you described could fall into many categories. The inability to sit still and the clenching when excited could be an underlying sensory processing challenge. Some of his behaviors could also be associated with ADHD, especially since you said it runs in the family. If his behaviors are truly concerning you and are impacting his day to day, your best bet would be to have him officially evaluated. A developmental pediatrician could assist with helping you to get the proper diagnosis if that is what you are seeking. It also could be nothing at all, but the only way to be certain is to get an official evaluation :)

My six year old daughter even noticed it the other day and asked why he did it and she said it's weird. @@nicholassims1947 No problem! Thats great to hear that he is doing so well. Sometimes little ones do engage in those "odd" like behaviors when overly excited. Hi maam. I badly want to ask this. My 19 month old son do also the hand flapping every time he is exretmely happy/excited. But some times he doesnt hand flapped. He started hand flapping when he is 1 yr old. Then about responding his name, sometimes he doesnt respond especially when he is watching. And there are times he respond. Example "Matt, come here i have a snack" i need to show him what im holding. Or "matt, let's go to your room" from where im standing near the stair. I think about 50% responding his name.
@AshtheOT
@AshtheOT Жыл бұрын
Hello. Thanks for sharing. Hand flapping can be typical for this age when a child is excited, however it should be monitored and addressed if it starts to interfere with his daily function. Also, it sounds like he needs verbal and visual assistance to respond to his name. Sometimes if kids are really focused on watching a show or playing they will tune everything out. However, if it seems like you have to typically show him what you are talking about... he may be processing things slower and the visual cue (i.e. showing him a snack, standing by the stairs) may be helping him to make sense of everything. Do you have access to Early Intervention services in your area? They could come out to just make sure he is developing appropriately.

He responds well to his name and he has no other symptoms apart from the hand thing. @AshtheOT Жыл бұрын
Yes it’s not uncommon for young children this age to flap when excited or agitated or in some sense of heightened emotion. Children around this age may engage in this behavior because they don’t have the language skills yet to verbally express themselves or it could even be their body’s way of getting the necessary sensory input. Either way I wouldn’t be too concerned right now especially if you are not seeing any other signs. If you notice it is persistent even as your child nears age one you may bring it to your doctors attention.

Hey so I wanted to ask a question, I have a 2 year old almost 3. He started nursery a few months ago. They said they wanted to refer him to a paediatrician because of his lack of social skills and does not like activities However, he plays very well at home with my siblings who are six and seven. He was born premature had multiple surgeries. He just got off a specific formula when he was almost 2, he eats by himself, preferably his hands. He has been diagnosed with speech delay and is currently in speech therapy which just started not long ago. He was in hospital for months and he was in icu, he was also moved from one hospital to another for his surgery He has not even been at nursery for five months. I have noticed he just likes to play with specific people when he did come home from hospital. We went into lockdown for about a year, when I took him out for the first time he cried, as he sleeps very well when he is excited to play with his cousins, he will jump up and down a little bit move his hands. When he gets upset. He sometimes hits his legs he use to hit his head, but has stopped now when were out in public. He does not cover his ears if there’s a loud noise the only time he will cover his ears is, if he’s in his dad’s car and dads music is too loud. When he want something that’s far from his reach, he would either get me or somebody else to get it for him. My son also loves to play with my little sister who is 7 if he wants her to play he will hold her hands and take her. He started saying mama, he does make noises and says things I just don’t understand When he’s ready to go out he will lead me to the door. apart from that he’s very independent likes to open and close, the door does play with toys when he feels like it is mostly into Cocomelon, sometimes I find that he covers both of his ears for like a few seconds, but does not do it regularly. I just wanted to know if there’s something there that I’m not seeing. He also has excellent eye contact, I have seen he got abit more energy like some kids. I also find he gets very frustrated when he’s trying to tell me something and I don’t understand. I have had some issues with the nursery because they wanted me to sign to get extra funding for the nursery. When he goes toilet in his nappy, he will give me a sign and let me know when it’s shower time he already knows. He met his uncle for the first time and he was crying. It took several months for him to get used to him. He plays with children that he knows what the children at nursery because he hasn’t been there for awhile. He does not really interact with them. Please please I need some advice, it takes up to 1 year to see a paediatrician in the UK. Oh yeah he had a stoma for a few months and it’s not removed. Sorry also he does respond very well to his name when I call him he will run to me. Dad does have a temper I feel like dad passed it on to him 😅😅 My little brother was the same he didn’t play with anyone or speak well. He was very hyper, he started playing with people when he turned 5 and only started speaking well last year. Sorry and also when I do something he don’t like, he will hit me and only me. He will hit my little sister when she does something to him lol when he is watching KZfaq and the is an ad he will bring me the remote to change it or cover his eyes and I will know he wants me to chage it

Hello! Thank you for sharing and for your question. It sounds like your son has some great foundational skills such as good eye contact and being able to let you know his wants and needs through his gestures or taking you to what he wants. It also sounds like he does have interest in being around others but prefers those he is most familiar with. A lot of children over the past couple of years have developed more issues with social skills due to the pandemic and being on lockdown for a while. The frustration sounds like a lot of it is coming from his speech delay and him not being able to verbally express himself yet. Some kids are indeed just slow to warm to new environments and new people. While some kids have some underlying issues (such as sensory challenges) that may be impacting their social skills and emotional regulation/frustration tolerance. I would definitely follow up with your speech therapist to get their insight on this situation as well since they get to see him for therapy. I don’t think it would hurt to bring this to your pediatricians attention. You could also request an OT evaluation to rule out any sensory concerns that may be impacting his social skills. If possible also see if your speech therapist could do a visit to his nursery to observe him in the nursery.

My son use to flap and he currently has odd finger movements that just started but he only does it when he watches something on the iPad. When we went to the doctor she did make the determination that he didn't need to be evaluated for ASD because he answers his name and makes great eye contact. My question is do they ever outgrow it or should I see someone?
@AshtheOT
@AshtheOT Жыл бұрын
Hello! Thanks for sharing and for your question. Sometimes when kids are visually stimulated (such as watching TV , iPad or something fast paced) they will engage in body stimming behaviors (such as flapping, finger movements, rocking, etc). This may be an indicator of stress, anxiety or just excitement. Im not sure how old your son is but yes in some cases they may outgrow it as their bodies and nervous/sensory systems develop and mature, however, if it is impacting your child's function in any way then yes I would see someone.

My son will be a year old on Valentine’s Day and I’ve noticed he flaps his hands (mainly his right) when he gets excited. He’s also obsessed with the vacuum cleaner and chases it around the house when I vacuum. Not sure if that’s indicative of autism or not, but I’m kind of worried.
@AshtheOT
@AshtheOT Жыл бұрын
Hello there! Thanks for sharing. No I wouldn't necessarily say those behaviors are indicative of autism in and of themselves... but if you are noticing additional signs that are worrying you, the best thing is to get him checked out. Since he is still quite young, I would say check with your doctor about getting him evaluated by your state's Early Intervention program. They will at least be able to hear your concerns and assess him in various areas. He may be too young for testing for autism but he is not too young to get his development assessed if thats what you are worried about.

Hello. The only true way to get a definite answer if you are concerned about your child is to get her evaluated. It is best to have a healthcare professional see your daughter in person and assess all of her skills and development. I recommend you bring these concerns to your pediatrician and ask for a referral for an evaluation.

If you have any concerns regarding these behaviors, the best thing to do would be to talk to your pediatrician or health care professional who can assess your child's development and rule out any conditions. Hello maam. Thanks for reaching out. If you are having any concerns please reach out directly to your child's doctor and discuss a referral for an evaluation if necessary. Having a healthcare professional assess your child will give you clearer information and help to point you in the right direction. Remember a single behavior does not necessarily mean anything is "wrong" but if there are multiple areas of concern then it may be worth getting your child looked at.
