Don't quote me on this but I believe it increases air speed but reduce thrust power. Kind of like your water hose when you put your thumb on the end. Same amount of water but higher speed, but increase fuel consumption because of pressure build up.
@aspct.
@aspct. 3 жыл бұрын
If I recall correctly when the throttle is low, the amount of air leaving the nozzle is not a lot so a narrow nozzle is best for performance. When the throttle is high on the other hand a lot more air leaves the nozzle thus to get the peak performance out of the engine the nozzle would need to be wider so the air can exit the engine freely without circulating inside. Low throttle = not much air, narrow nozzle; high throttle = a lot of air, wide nozzle. Sorry for my bed england and thanks for coming to my ted talk.
@AverageNeighbor
@AverageNeighbor 3 жыл бұрын
Just look up "nozzle thermodynamics," that should give the answer, basically it increases velcoity of a fluid(air) at the expense of pressure, and can accelerate subsonic fluid to contribute to thrust.

9:19: Houston we have a problem. What is so very cool about your engine is that you run it and run it and run it. Most DIY jet turbines are run for a few seconds and then shut down (or they break). I have an older model Jaguar and occasionally on nice days when traffic is light in the interstate near my house I run the car at it’s redline. The first time I got up to 132 mph and was so freaked out at how fast the relatively light traffic ahead of me “caught u to me” I slowed down immediately. But now I will let it ride for a several minutes at which my fear of any unseen state patrol takes over and I slow down. But between that first run-up and then immediate slow down and getting up to speed and holding it for a while, the difference is night and day. Your work (and play) is such a joy to watch.

My first reaction is that usually military jets do not have variable nozzles unless the aircraft is supersonic. The idea is to produce a gas flow which matches the speed of the aircraft so that there is effectively zero kinetic energy going into the gas and it all goes into the aircraft. IE if the aircraft is flying at Mach 1.3 the gas needs to leave the nozzle at mach 1.3 so it is realtive to the atmosphere, stationary. The second point is that for a nozzle to be effective there needs to be a gap between the turbine blades and the start of the nozzle. The gap is a function of the diameter of the engine but I don't know the equation for it. My guess would be that at least 10cm would be needed for an engine that size possibly as much as 20cm.
@paulkrimmel6384
@paulkrimmel6384 3 жыл бұрын
Gordon Lawrence the nozzle is also there for protection of the engine if you have an afterburner, the pressure in the nozzle would be to high for the engine to work safly so the nozzle opens up when the afterburner is ignited

it is an adjustable thrust nozzle like in fighter jets - but it is only effective in combination with an afterburner.

@hakapik683
@hakapik683 3 жыл бұрын
Fuel "efficiency" is not a word that you commonly hear haha.. see the size of the fuel jug he is using on the test bench.. tells the tale right there about how much fuel it burns. Also watch the bubbles at the 4:43 mark go through the fuel lines when he is getting it primed and running....
@tylermech66
@tylermech66 3 жыл бұрын
jet engines.... aren't well known for being efficient. There's a reason why the jet industry is on par with the car industry for carbon emissions, despite the ludicrously smaller amount of jets flying around than cars even taking into account the larger size and carrying capacity of most commercial jets.
@srslam1347

Since it isn't doing any work or moving it's fuel efficiency is probably 0

SRS the work it’s doing is moving air through at high speeds, there is literally fire coming out the back and not just straight up
