Great review Kat! I have not heard of this maker before so was nice to see how his paints perform, they look gorgeous!! I like using handmade paints, and I also am a maker of them based in Australia. They are so relaxing to make and is such a joy to see others painting with them too. Great to see what you did here with the ones made by Hunter, he must be proud of what he has created 🙂 handmade paints are definitely different to traditional mass produced brands but have their own qualities that make them special in their own right 🙂

@@MeowMeowKapow I'm pretty certain we could spend the rest of our lives experimenting with our art supplies lol :P A long time ago Copic started making a "opaque white" ink in a jar for dip pens advertised to "not bleed into your base color" after too many people complained to them about having their gel pen highlights turn colors from reactivating their inks. I've got to wonder if it's because some types of dye markers are made to be blended and re-wet/activated, if it matters how much color or which color you put down... oooh or which paper you use. I ran into this recently. Like you with the violet, I kinda liked the mint green highlights I got when going over the dark green colored area of my cactus marker art. I found that slower or repeat strokes (where the gel pen ink was very wet) reactivated the color below the most. Have fun if you decide to experiment :)

I really liked the colors and how you got them to react in your artwork. How do you get your cat to leave you alone while your working mine are a-holes lol. My bf's cat has become my guard who chases the others off but she has to try and steal my supplies and for some odd reason gets triggered to major protective mode when I use my electric pencil sharpener anyone gets close after I've used it she has to attack biting and even spring-loads at them as they come close. Your cat is all chilled out and sweet mine are all psycho obsessed stalkers and thieves lol.

AHAHAHAHA. Well, first of all, Bubba is the best. Sommmmmetimes he tries to steal things, but usually when they’re laying down on the desk, not when I’m using them. Making sure to put his bed next to my desk really helps because then he can supervise and ask for pettins whenever but also be really close. He’s also like......13 or so years old or whatever so he’s technically an old man and likes to spend a lot of his time just sleeping. I do remember when he was a kitten he used to try to attack the pencil in my hand, and I had to be extra paranoid about materials getting spilled like ink and stuff, but that didn’t really last long. He’s honestly just a good boy on his own, and as long as he gets plenty of pat pats and snackums, he stays that way.

It’s AWESOME how many people make their own paints and I totally blame Eve Bolt for that. She convinced me like two years ago or whatever to dabble in doing it and her videos are so accessible that I’m convinced they’re part of what encouraged this sudden handmade paint boom. I’ll always be honest and try to remain objective, regardless of the product and how I obtained it. Something that I think is a pro might be something someone else thinks is a con, and vice versa. Really, as long as you’re aware of the facts you can decide if they matter or not. Y’know?

Yup, hunter found a manufacturer that makes a liquid po49 pigment and uses it to make Quin gold and sap green! It takes him like an hour or more to mull the pigment and make sure it adheres to the binder and he’s done a LOT of tweaking with that pigment in particular.

Ooooh, it’s outside sniffs weather?! Maybe I’ll treat him to that today because Bubba is also a big fan of the outside sniffs. Plus, there are a ton of children outside today and he loves to watch them and make sure they don’t come and try to eat his chom choms. Gotta stay vigilant, y’know? And the dye theory is one that’s been mentioned before, but I’m only half convinced! Mostly because the results thus far are inconclusive, and because I’ve tested enough white pens for the data to be even more confusing. Still, dye keeps coming back up as a possibility so I’m wondering how to really prove it.

@@MeowMeowKapow The protection of the chom choms is the most sacred task that can befall any member of the Meowcracy, second only to the appropriate veneration of a suddenly appearing sun nap spot. *nods solemnly* Also, I have no idea how to prove or disprove the dye theory. very good review, kat! i loved your doodlefinder because the paints, although very pigmented they are very... like, muted? its a palette consisting of earth tones and dark values, so i wouldnt call it vibrant myself, but your mixing choices made your piece stand out! :D so far about handmade paints, ive gotten some from an indian paintmaker, Trupti, from Arkaarcreation. Her paints a re good and affordable for those outside US and while she has some staple colors every other paintmaker does (ie yellow ochre, ult. blue, yellows and so on) she also has some nice colors you dont see too often, like green earth, potter's pink, manganese violet and even genuine indigo! (NB1) i love her paints, they are fairly easy to rewet, albeit the potters pink and green earth a little on the dry side. Green earth is probably a clay? so it has a weaker color payoff, but i suspect that is the propriety of the pigment rather than the paintmaker's doing. it doesnt matter for me because it is charming in the way it is delicate!

I’ve only tried a couple different handmade paints, and even though I haven’t gone back and used them as often as “normal” paints, I always really enjoy getting to play with them. Lots of fun watching you present these colors! I feel bad all the small paint makers out there who are so overshadowed by the big corporate giants of the industry. But how do you measure whether hand-made paints are artist grade, mid grade, or student grade? As you said, each maker has their own character and formula style, but it's tough to know. Some beautiful colors in this set and will definitely have to look more closely at the paint makers on Etsy! Cheers and glad you got to check these out! :)
@MeowMeowKapow
@MeowMeowKapow 5 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, it’s difficult to what “grade” of paints handmade ones are because most of them haven’t been put through rigorous testing, and like I said in this video, one of the paints is made with an unconfirmed pigment. Without knowing the viability of the raw materials just to start with, it’s pretty much impossible to really know what’s up. But it’s a risk worth playing with.

Maybe is a fluorescent pigment? They are the reason some purpled and pinks - and specifically opera- are so bright and maybe this sort of pigment reactivates more easily and that’s why it effects juicier white gel pens? Some fluorescent markers do the same to me. Just a guess though

🤷‍♀️ I have no darn clue. I’ve done tests with other paints that I know have fluro in them and had it not happen, and I’ve had it happen with ones that don’t, and it still happens. It’s a very weird quirk of the uniball signo pen, I guess.
