Just a small tip for hanging plastic around your outside windows/structure. I cut small strips of cardboard to use to staple into on top of the plastic around the edges. This keeps the wind from ripping the plastic off the staple and coming down. You can buy a roll of foam tape to do the same, but empty Amazon boxes cut in strips works the same. Your plastic will not get ripped off from the wind this way.

@@giterdone9013 I have lattice around the bottom of my 2 story deck and have to store my car, tools, etc under it. And there's also lattice on the ends of my porch where I keep furniture on it. I always have to cover the lattice with plastic to keep the snow and rain from blowing through them. I learned real quick about the wind blowing the plastic off one year. Plus I hated to spend money on a roll of that tape.....especially when I had tons of cardboard boxes from getting some modular cubes for my craft room renovation. I'm all about repurposing as much as possible and the cardboard strips are not that visible and your staples hold so much better. I never have the plastic blow off with the strips on it.

Howdy! Soooo don't want to cause you too much stress but your "mistake" of not "removing the vapour barrier / paper backing before putting up is not the mistake. The mistake was that you put it in backwards! The paper stays on and faces inside (warmer part of) the house not outside. Removing the paper / vapour barrier makes it less efficient. Didn't see if you put the plastic back up which will help a bit. At least for the rest of the walls you won't have as much work - well ... - as all you have to do is turn it around. I hope you read this / see this before your next session dealing with it / that room! Always enjoy your videos, seeing your adventures and watching all your projects.

She was avoiding having to remove all of the interior paneling. By pulling out each bat of insulation and removing the paper she could simply tuck the bat in behind the plastic then fasten the plastic back in place. Lastly nailing boards up again. Plastic is perfectly fine as vapor barrier.

A single girl, alone, ironically at the same time as my favourite Nomad so it has been a real treat. I’m 5’4” rounded off, 125lb, ball of can and will do because girl, when you HAVE to, you’d be surprised at what you’re capable of. It was always on my bucket list, a retirement plan. But I’m glad I took the plunge now cause at 48, there’s days I wish I had Hannah’s, “younger,” energy, lol. With Google, a little bit of balls and no fear, anything is possible. Start small and with things you’re comfortable with. ❤️ And the way this poor crazy world is going, we should try not to leave any bucket list items unchecked now. The insulation only needed to be turned around. It was backward. Because you live in a cold, northern climate where the most humidity will generally be inside the house, you want the vapor barrier facing the interior. The brown paper was the vapor barrier. For future reference - with this kind of insulation you can completely skip the plastic vapor barrier you put on top. What you did works, it’s just not the most efficient way to use insulation.

I use clear plastic shower curtain liners to cover my screen porch in the winter. I look for them on-line or in TJ Max etc. and they are thick and clear. You can get then in different lengths also. As for the insulation, you shouldn't remove the paper. You should turn it around and staple the paper to the studs. Do not put the plastic back up! It will cause sweating. The paper breaths and the plastic does not. In the long run that plastic will cause moisture problems big time!

Hi Hannah, this is a very fun video, you have such a fun time even when you have to do things over. The crowbar you mentioned is actually called a prybar. When you move the new stove in, don't use doublewall pipe all the way down use stainless single wall pipe to where the pipe goes through the roof or the wall, it will produce more heat in the cabin, this is how it's done here in Alaska and I have been doing it for years. The whole purpose of a vapor barrier is to keep moisture in the form of vapor from getting into the wall cavity, so mold can't grow. The correct way to install a plastic vapor barrier is to bring the ceiling plastic down over the wall plastic and taping all the seams. Also, where the plastic is stapled to the stud creating 2 holes should be taped along with any hole in the plastic that vapor can pass through. But if the space is not heated in the winter that should not be a problem.

If you want to keep your heat going put split logs in there during the day and whole logs at night the key is to not let it go out during the night then when you get up in the morning all you need to do is add paper or the split logs in eventually you will get a nice fire going also remember to get those ashes out and keep your vent area clean :) The glowing embers is what helps keep the fires going :) Wanted to give you a few tips so you weren't having to do that every morning you can just stoke the fire.
@imagrasshopper9510
@imagrasshopper9510 2 жыл бұрын
My preference with a fireplace is to cover hot embers at night with ashes (not too deep). They stay hot all night. In the morning add some small wood to start it up and you've got a roaring fire in about 2 minutes. Is that practical with a wood stove?
@PeaceLoveAndHope
@PeaceLoveAndHope 2 жыл бұрын
@@imagrasshopper9510 The amount of ash left in the stove after burning wood is dependent on the type of wood you use. Temperature is also another factor that plays into this. The higher the temperature you require, the more likely you will have to clean out the ash. During the winter seasons, you must clean out excess ash from the woodstove. As it gets warmer, you will most likely not pay much attention to the heating in your home. It is easy to leave behind a layer of ash in the stove. After all, it is beneficial for lighting fires quickly and for efficiency reasons. Unfortunately, ash does come with its downsides. Ash is an acidic residue. It is efficient in drawing out moisture too. If we combine these two pieces, it can wreak havoc on the inside of your wood stove. If you have too much ash that hits the bottom of your grate, it can cause premature burnouts. Hot embers can burn for several days. At worst, you can have an unwanted fire. To leave a wood-burning stove burning overnight, you have to take several safety precautions. You first have to ensure that there is adequate maintenance on your chimney. The chimney must be swept at least once a year. Additionally, make sure there are not any flammable objects near the stove. So truely it kinda already has itself set up that way in the end with ash that is around it . :)

No it doesn't hurt to have the paper and plastic on the same side that's the way they did it when we built our house 31 yrs ago. The paper is part of the r factor for the insulation so if you take the paper off it reduces the r factor of the insulation.

@skyem5574 2 жыл бұрын
@@chrishoskins7677 Yes, but having done something rather similar myself after asking an old mate who was an insulator for help. I dont believe you can just flip it around with both layers of barrier together as moisture would form between the insulations back layer and the plastic sheeting causing mold. To fix it we had to take down and completely re-do the wall, thankfully only one but im assuming that Hannah probably didn’t want to do that for everything as she would have had much more work therefore the insulation as you’ve said could possibly be slightly less efficient than it would have been but made the job more efficient in terms of manual labour. Could be misinformed but either way hopefully it wont make any noticeable different to her heat it would be a right shame!

No, and she actually states this in her last two videos. She KNOWS that she only needs one outer layer and as opposed to tearing EVERYTHING down, she was tripping over it as it was ffs, then she just peeled the one against the wall off, left the interior plastic attached along the bottom, restuffed the now bare insulation back up then the plastic barrier stapled back in, THEN her walls again. It, is done, RIGHT and will do just fine. Wow, sometimes I wonder if we all watch the same videos, lol.

@Peary_Legal I agree. I thought the paper only limited the loose fiberglass fibers from puffing back out at you and into the room as it was smushed into place.(and staple it in place). If she put the plastic against the outer wall and taped ALL the seams then that would be a problem. If anything, she learned how to remove tongue&grove without destroying it
