Leaving behind everything you know for a life of danger, but with true freedom; is this true, or just our romanticized idea crafted to avoid the myth of freedom?
Rei Hiroe’s cult classic Black Lagoon is a wealth of anime philosophy, a great series to watch for deeper meaning, or just entertainment; there aren’t many anime like it. As one of the greatest character pieces of all time, we can look to it for a message about freedom. The story revolves around Rokuro Okajima, nicknamed Rock by Dutch, and his descent from an average life to the criminal underworld. But are these worlds really that different? While starting with Revy “two hands”, Rock grows conflicted against the world of Roanapur because he entered it for freedom; yet he finds no more than what he had in his previous life. What he finds is simply the same ideals in a different package, summed up best by others he conflicts with like Balalaika, Change, and Takenaka, and those he sympathizes with, like Hansel and Gretel, Yukio, and Revy to some extent. But Revy is another point; she entered this world to avoid pain. She becomes power and money because power and money hurt her. But she hates herself for it, she seeks something else; the freedom she lacks in Roanapur. So today we ask, looking at Rei Hiroe’s creation, at those within it like Balalaika, Rebecca Lee, and Okajima; if freedom exists, why do we not feel free?

Balalaika, The twins, and Yukio are characters that make me think how life is often made by chance and they never got to have any freedom in the first place. All of the characters in Black Lagoon are not free but they do have the will to do something. Even existing is a will in my view.

The twins arc wrecks me everytime I see it because it reminds me that there are kids born into horrible lives in this world and they have no chance of redemption. Rock tries but he realizes they were to far gone. That part where he gets pissed after the surviving one flashes him shakes me to my core. Having a stable childhood is important. Without it... well... 😢

I like how Rock is one of the best Main Characters in anime. It's completely different from most main characters where the growth he undergoes isn't framed as a completely good thing. It's necessary evil at best. Also the fact that he has mature personality and is able to see how it views clash with those around him isn't something we get from the more immature main characters. Furthermore, the fact that Rock growth's is all emotional without him gaining any physical power to change is surroundings is a definite breath of fresh air. Finally, I think that the thing that makes Rock such a good main character is what Cheng says at 0:12. He actually doesn't *feel* like a main character, just another pawn in a much larger scheme. I think that's make Black Lagoon different from other anime because it's not just one character or faction controlling all the change. Each faction has their own goal and we can see how they constantly suppress Rock at each turn instead of just being the strong villians that inevitably lose. This makes Rock my second favorite main character after Keima from The World God Only Knows. Curious to see what other traits make a good main character or what other traits Rock has that makes him a good MC.
@ProfessorViral
@ProfessorViral Жыл бұрын
I think what you mentioned about him not feeling like a main character is one of the shows biggest strengths. He's essentially attempting to become what a main character is, someone who affects the world, not reacts to it, as he always had. He got a hint of it in the first episodes, but failed every other time. It makes the world he's fighting against feel powerful and true
@flameking2178
@flameking2178 Жыл бұрын
@@ProfessorViral It makes the world he's fighting against feel powerful and true I think this point absolutely nails what makes a great main character. It actually feels like he's a part of the world instead the world being made for him where the story is driven by them achieving their goals. Seeing how the world pushes against the main character and how he responds to that makes him feel more like a *character* instead of the living embodiment of the plot. Of course, I can't really blame most fiction for how the main character be the plot since unlike most stories, Black Lagoon is more of an emotional adventure than a physical one. Rock isn't really traveling to different places or discovering the secrets of Roanpur, but it is living as a person in a much larger world. In a sense, Black Lagoon is similar to an episodic series although there is definitely progression in between arcs. Finally, you nailed it when you called Black Lagoon a character piece because it's more about the exploring the characters than exploring the plot or the setting. Ultimately, that's what makes make Rock feel more like a main *character* because it focuses on more on the world changes Rock instead of how Rock changes the world.

you can be a badass while still hating yourself. If you want another great character for that would be tealc from stargate. Nothing I have done since turning against the goa'uld will make up for the atrocities I once committed in their name. Somewhere deep inside you you knew it was wrong, a voice you did not recognize screamed for you to stop. You saw no way out, it was the way things were, they could not be changed. You're trying to convince yourself the people you're hurting deserved it. You became numb to their pain and suffering, you learned to shut out the voice speaking against it. There's always a choice. Indeed there is. I chose to ignore it Yet you sit here now. I sit here, and I cannot imagine the day when I will forgive myself. Because it will never come. One day others may try to convince you they have forgiven you, that is more about them than you. For them, imparting forgiveness is a blessing. How do you go on? It is simple. You will never forgive yourself. Accept it. You hurt others, many others, that cannot be undone. You will never find personal retribution, but your life does not have to end. That which is right, just and true can still prevail. If you do not fight for what you believe in all may be lost for everyone else. But do not fight for yourself, fight for others, others that may be saved through your effort. That is the least you can do.

Man, Takenaka is so interesting. By the end of his arc, he realizes he plays a role in society as well. Governments have always had and will always need enemies and rebels just as much as they need politicians and bureaucrats. Takenaka isn’t chasing a dream, but rather, is a pawn in the system like everyone else.

Drifters said it's best "A man can endure the loss of dignity so long as his hunger is met. And on the other hand, hunger is nothing to a man who has dignity. When you take away both, when they're scared and have nothing to lose, that's when they rise up." In this video you're mainly conflating freedom with power, specifically power over other people. Not only is there also power of nature as well as power over yourself, but there's also a massive "you get what tolerate" aspect when it comes to exerting power over others. Ultimately, while Freedom and Power coexist however, one functions best as a means to an end and the other functions best as an end. Although they can serve both purposes. That being said power over nature creates the most freedom for people in general because it lowers the overall manpower required to achieve the same result. Of course, automation brings it's own issues with Power and Freedom. Control and Power over oneself grants the highest degree freedom, although it does require the bare minimum power of being able to make choices.

I think it is real, but limited to the moments where you can choose of your options. And yeah, e are doomed to make our own meaning and discover, or let it be pushed on us. I think thats the free will, that within conditions we have times of choicesand what we can do within limitations, which is not limitless but far more that most pople think and the effects bigger than people expect too. Not everything can e reached alone , but a fair bit can, especially with help and it still can make meaning and change in th world.

Here's a thought I had: The feeling of freedom is dangerous. The experience of feeling free can occur separate from living in conditions of freedom. For example: A person who gives into a vice or addiction often feels free while giving into that addiction. It seems like many characters in BL had the same issue. Obviously Rock, when he felt free after seemingly escaping his corporate and mundane life or Takenaka when he thought for some idealized kind of change by revolution and last but not least Revy when she is being... Revy. The intoxicating feeling sells the Lie of Freedom to those people, ultimately trapping them in new systems and constrains. That feeling makes it hard to differentiate between freedom of choice/freedom from limitations and caprice. The leaf in the wind might feel free, but it is ultimately controlled and constrained by the wind. It seems like examining ones circumstances and actions is not only a prerequisite to gaining and maintaining freedom but also to avoid getting trapped. Well atleast that's what I concluded for myself right now. On a lighter note: I have to congratulate you on that summer drip. And as a dude who had long hair for many years, it is my obligation to encourage others to grow a lion mane.

No joke, as soon as this video ended, I got an ad for Huntington bank that said: "Freedom from surprise fees - Huntington." The amount of meta in that one sentence, considering your final summary on the topic of Freedom, is palpable. The very fact that I need to worry about surprise fees from someone on high, who controls all the money, means it is not true freedom. It is freedom that is given - Given by someone who holds the true idea of freedom. It is the illusion of Freedom, and we are not free.

It's honestly what leads up to how Rock is in Roberta's Bloodhunt. Rock is a smart dude he's dense in some ways yet when he allows himself to adapt is when he shines. Like nobody would talk back to Balalaika but he did since he had been around her enough. Then with Revy earlier on he called her out on her BS. He failed with Yukio because he tried to save her this was him being dense and not adapting. Revy was a hardass that intimidated most people around her the same as Balalaika. It's just that Revy was always hiding her insecurities and Balalaika he called out her leadership. He was somebody that Revy once thought would save her from all that she feared, yet he became it. He's a monster that drew a gun.

I remember watching Black Lagoon for the first time and thinking "Damn, I really like all this action. I already liked quentin tarantino, but this is mixed with the good parts of Micheal Bay." Now, thanks to you and thanks to a rewatch... I now understand why this show is such a masterpiece: You can watch it completely drunk and enjoy all the action But holy s#it, there's so much more behind all that action And sidenote: I really enjoy your clothing choices in your last video's. I have booted up "existing to exist", but forgot I still had this one tabbed. So watch this one first. Now, the thing Rock hated? And tshirt about growing up when you are talking about meaning? I like it!

@@ProfessorViral I'm not religious but I do like to look into a part of Christianity to answer that. Something that the Bible teaches (I can't remember the verse or if it was from the actual Bible or a modified American Bible) is that you should not be tempted because God does not tempt, He only guides. It is said that to fall to temptation only leads to desire, and then to sin. What I take from it is, we already have a natural progression in place, obviously a boring progression that only exists because a part of nature and life is sustainability and multiplication, however it's actually temptation and desire that makes our natural progression boring because we expect more out of life than what we should. Finding a meaning to an otherwise unmeaningful, coincidental existence is what bounds us. We want life to be more than what it actually is. It's the curse that our intelligence provided us. So really what I consider true freedom is simply to be unburdened. We can still progress towards having money and nice things, but it should only be on the premise that we can have it and not that we desire it, and to be ok without it. The moment you desire something it can potentially lead you onto a path of desiring more (kind of like people being addicts). If we keep our lifestyles I think there's only 2 acts of freedom we posses: to fall in love and to die.

You say towards the end of the video that Black Lagoon is unfinished and while that is true, it should be noted that the manga does continue past the point where the anime leaves off. While it is true that you may never have absolute freedom as there will always be circumstances outside your control, you do always have a choice. While the anime was short lived, Rock straddles the line between being a criminal who is willing to assist in illegal or illicit activities, but still retains his morality in always trying to do whatever will results in the greater good. Revy, Balalaika, Roberta, Yukio...they all could have turned away at any moment. It may not have made their lives better or happier, but the choice was always there and theirs to take.

I appreciate you not just saying the surface level answer of capitalism, when discusing the issue of freedom and power in relation to society and hierarchy. These issues have been round long before Capitalism and will exist even after, a as of now hypothetical better system is found and implemented. Although I personally believe you only skimmed a bit below the surface as to how freedom and power relate to society and hierarchy. And then the questions of what happens to humans, if we where to actually be unbound from those constraints.

How is the manga for Black Lagoon? It keeps the quality after what the anime adapted, or it starts getting worse? I want to know what happened to the main cast past the anime. It might be just me, but I feel like the Bloodhound OVA was very confusing and convoluted in comparison with the first 2 seasons. It has some nice character progression and themes, but the storyline was all over the place and the action scenes even more over the top than before. Did they change the source material massively, or it's just a more complicated arc overall that wasn't paced well?
@subparsentient2653

Late response, but the manga is incredible and an easy top ten of all time for me. Reading the manga made me realize that this anime is actually a nearly perfect adaptation and it covers nearly all of the core story in the manga while skipping over only mostly negligible information. Read the manga, dude. It's fucking amazing.

I'm unsure. I believe there is, but I have no answer myself. Nature is cruel and harsh, we and everything we created emerged from such a thing, and thus it seems our default state is one of equal harshness. My bet would be that across different times and societies, we have found what has and hasn't worked. By isolating the true cases of despair in those cases, we could try and create something better. For example, despite being communist in name, the Soviet Union experienced the same greed as an capitalist society. It's something which helps make Roanapur as awful as it is. As such, we could argue greed is something which ruins societies, not necessarily the overarching principles we may commonly point to. From there, we have to work to exhaust the list. But this is long, hard work which requires at it's heart the destabilization of long held beliefs and systems. It's something a single humans life can never fully know, and as such, is exceptionally hard to dedicate oneself too. So, I think the first step is to be aware of such things, to learn and teach others so the resistance to change can be dropped. That is all I can say, without stretching to presumption in my youth. I hope to one day have a more complete answer
