Dave Liebman's groundbreaking book has been a staple of Jazz education since it was first published in the 1980's, but what is it about and is it right for you?
Responding to a comment requesting an overview of this outstanding body of work, I discuss the section within the book and loosely outline some of the concepts. We also talk about its relevance to different ability levels from beginner to outside chromatic monster!

¡Muchas gracias!

I suspect that the saxophone and piano leaves a little more room for certain sounds that are more “outside” than the guitar might be. The guitar (because of its the sound) can be notoriously unforgiving to certain kinds of superimposed possibilities sonically than the sax and piano. The guitar sounds great with Tritone related and back-door dominant sounds in particular. It’s also conducive to diminished type sounds as well. Personally my ear struggles a bit with whole-tone and augmented type sounds on the guitar but that’s just me though. I do think the guitar has a good tonality for outlining poly-chordal possibilities as well where you might start with an E Maj. type sound that climbs up to a D min. type sound and drops back to E Maj. which is a more non-functional harmonic approach.

Thanks very much for your thoughts! I would however argue that the guitar has the potential to create so many different tones and timbres compared to the sax and keys that we can always dial something more suitable in. Such a versatile instrument!! 🎸🎸🎸 Cheers for your time and for sharing

@@CharlesHarrisonMusicTuition Thanks a lot Charles. It’s been a while since I’ve left this comment and here lately I’ve been working a lot with the concept of composing around a freestanding melody rather than crafting melodies over a set of arranged chord changes. The possibilities for a harmonization a really astonishing with this motive composition. I really just begun to scratch the surface though… I really need to put together a quick video on my other channel going over some of the things I’ve been messing around with. It’s really strong stuff and someone that’s a much better player than I could could really do something with it I think.

@@CharlesHarrisonMusicTuition thanks a lot Charles but in all honesty there isn’t really anything to catch up on. I had actually deleted all of my prior content and I’m still a bit uncertain as to whether or not to keep producing more videos. I do think doing something along the lines of what we are discussing here might be worthwhile though.

I struggle so much with these superimpositions... I get the first progression, the tritone substitution, but then it gets crazy. I mean he doesn't explain enough what side-slip is for example... It's just not clear enough. I know my scales, arpeggios, altered, diminished, whatever... Anything. I can even play out by feel. But I want clearer explanations on why these specific chords, and also am I supposed to hear both keys at the same time, is it like a mix of 2 keys that has ONE specific color? If so do all different key superimposition have a specific color? A degree of "out sounding"?... Lots of question.

I completely appreciate your frustration!! Personally I've studied all of the outside approaches which I've encountered and my conclusion is that any note is justifiable over any chord. The method you apply is not really relevant, it's more about adding direction and 'forward motion' to the phrase. Since playing completely freely and using the natural shapes and patterns of the guitar as my structure I've become really 'free' and happy with my outside playing, compared to beforehand where I was mentally distracted by trying to apply a particular and often challenging concept. These methods are great for training the ear in the practice room but I've concluded that they're not for me for the time being and I can scratch the itch using more comfortable approaches. Cheers!
