I didn't expect to have an earthquake hit in the middle of my video, but we had one here on Japan on January 1st. I talk a little about my channel content, popular videos of 2023, and what I'm thinking about in 2024. (Quake epicenter was the Noto Peninsula in Japan, 205 miles from my area. Our area in Aichi prefecture sustained no damage.)
Check out the KZfaq channel of Thomas Andrews ‪@AmigaofRochester‬

Michael Mullett who sold me the Portable is also selling of part of his vintage Mac collection because of financial hardship. You can find his recapped Color Classic MYSTIC and CD-ROM drive sale on TinkerDifferent here: tinkerdifferent.com/threads/m...

QUAKE INFO: The Noto Peninsula (Japan) quake (能登半島地震) hit at about 4:10pm on Jan. 1st (Japan time), and you can see the quaking start at about 15:44 in my video. No damage in my area in Aichi prefecture because we are just over 200 miles / 329 km from the epicenter. But the length of the shaking was rather unsettling. I've been in Japan since 1994 and experienced everything from the 1995 Kobe quake (thankfully, from Aichi prefecture) and the 2011 Fukushima quake (also from Aichi). No major quake catastrophe in our area during those years. A big quake has been predicted for our area in Aichi for many decades; but thankfully, we have been richly blessed in that a major one has not hit Aichi in all the years I've been here. Even so, we must adequately take precautions because we do not know what tomorrow may bring.

😮 Wow, what a professional! If an earthquake happened to me I'd have to take the rest of the day off. "I'm just going to lie down here under the desk and take a little nap."

We are located 200 miles from the epicenter. Had it been more intense, I no doubt would have done just that. There was no damage in our area, which is why, after confirming everyone in the household was okay, I continued filming the rest of the video.

I subscribed because you are "REAL". By that I mean I like your easygoing style and that makes your videos fun to watch. I also watch because you are so thorough in your videos, and careful to cover things in detail. I hope these comments help, and I'm sure like me, all your followers are glad you were not hurt in the earthquake. It was another example of you keeping your cool and being "REAL" to give live reporting on an unplanned event. Oh, I almost forgot, ... I state on my ComputerHobbyShop website motto that the reason I post Vintage and Modern Tech Videos myself is, ... "for Computer Enthusiasts who love to use a computer for anything they can". I find it helps when people know your motives so thanks for your great creative spirit that inspires us to learn and share even more ourselves!

Thank you for making time to kindly offer me feedback. It was indeed a rich blessing that we are more than 200 miles from the earthquake epicenter. Even so, you could tell by the movement of my camera that it was impossible not to have felt that quake. Quakes are unfortunately rather common here in Japan. However, you never know if the next one will be “the big one.“

A huge thank you to you for sharing your enthusiasm with everyone. Your passion comes through and it is contagious. I hope you have another excellent year. I will look forward to more videos and your unique way of doing them that is excellent. Keep up the good work and thanks again for all you do in the community. Even though I started life as a Commodore 64 fan and then an Amiga, Mac was the next logical step in my computing history (circa 1995 with a 7200) and I still use them to this day, (As well as PCs as there was never anything wrong with having both in my view!)

Happy New Year !, yeah I heard about the earthquake while doing my morning walk here in the states, hope everyone is OK. I did hear there was damage. I bought a used HP-67 back in the late 70's and used it for a long time. RPN was different at first but then really got to liking it and you know no one would ask to borrow my calculator after their first encounter with it. Now with the whole IOS vs Android thing I guess I'm just a hard core Android type. Maybe someone can come up with a day camp to ease an Android user over to IOS. 😅👍

If you decide to do a video on your oscilloscope, I think it would be fantastic if it focus more on how to use it, rather than showing off the features of that particular device. So many of the videos on KZfaq focus on product marketing and not on pointers for people just getting starting their electronics journey. I first stumbled upon your videos when seeking out videos to help me repair my SE/30. However, your thoroughness captivated me so that I have probably watched most if not all your videos. Your humbleness is infectious. Your lack of motivation by greed or fame is refreshing. I wouldn’t have you change a thing.

Thank you for your very kind words! Showing the Rigol scope in a practical situation when testing a vintage Mac would probably be best. I need to give thought to that. For now, here is one of the more comprehensive videos covering the feature set of the DHO800 and 900 series scopes: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iZ6apdN01MDdqGw.html (Again, I have the model 804, which is really the one to get, for a number of reasons.)

I initially came to your channel to watch Vintage Mac content around the time I got my first Macintosh - The Plus. I have stayed for your in-depth reviews and technical knowledge, but most of all, your unwavering honesty, which I admire most about anyone, not just KZfaqrs. I am one who has asked multiple questions on your channel and I do so instinctively, not just because I know you'll likely know more on the subject than I who's fairly new to Vintage Computing on a technical level, but because I know you'll always give a detailed, honest reply, quickly. Earthquakes notwithstanding, I hope the best for you, your family and I wish you Happy New Year and here's to a successful 2024. 2024 feels so strange to say.

Often it is so easy to look at numbers and consider views “low” but remember… If you were to meet each viewer of a video (say 2,000 viewers) and had to talk to each that would be a huge amount! Normally DJ's & the crowd like Music wishes. But because of no voices in the songs, music wishes were obsolete. The DJ's played their Set & the Party People did theirs. ... (Young People are our best performd answer about coming challanges.) - Came to your Channel because of your HP 12C Video. Since I like as in good old Songs (with voices) both levels. The attraction of the content (music) and the told brain Level. Both together create hope at a meta Level. (Can't describe it better & sorry for my english.)

There's also repeat business too-I've seen the the "Choosing Caps" video at least three times myself. I found your channel in March 2023 when I was researching SD/SCSI adapters. I found your review of MacSD on their site and was hooked immediately! Your content is fantastic and informative! Happy New Year to you, James! Your channel is a gem of step by step videos. I don't how many times I've just linked to one of your videos when someone is asking something mac related on facebook. Just solid great stuff! Half of the enjoyment of watching your videos is your cheerfulness, honesty and enthusiasm. Also, that accent of yours is very pleasing to listen to. I think that I found out about your channel thanks to the Cursed SE/30 videos ActionRetro did where he mentioned you. I remember I got hooked when I watch a video where you recapped an old harddrive (the Hyperdrive?) PS I think it might be wise to do a video that's SEO friendly every now and then, so it'll drive new eyes to the channel. Maybe 2 or 3 per year? Well, it's your channel and your time to spend. PS2 Please bring back the 80's checkered shirts! PS3 Cool that you not only captured the earthquake but also kept it in. I'm glad it wasn't stronger

@vaelenorg 6 ай бұрын
あけましておめでとうございます! Happy New Year! Love your channel. I found your channel through the vintage mac mastadon community and the videos that brought me in were the SE/30 recapping videos. I'm in Machida and it's been awesome to find vintage mac people in Japan that I can learn from and talk to. I had Apple IIs in my elementary school and Macs in my middle school growing up. In high school (late 90s) I got more into Windows and Linux but I bought a G4 iMac in 2002 and used that as my primary household computer until I was forced to upgrade to something newer. I've also exclusively used Mac (and Linux) at work for the past 10 years at least. I recently got into vintage computing and bought an LCIII and I'm now recapping an SE/30. For videos, I would say just keep doing what you're doing! Just having the energy and interest to actually make videos is so important in my experience. When it starts to feel like you're only doing it because your subscribers expect you to, then you're in trouble. Better to make things you want to make and let folks in that niche community find you. I found your review of the Hakko desoldering iron very helpful. I bought one and it is a real game changer for desoldering through hole components. (I also found that it works pretty well for reflowing bad solder joints if you don't turn on the vacuum.) I'm also curious about your calculator videos now. I was a TI guy back in the 90s. I still have my TI-86 in a box in the storage somewhere. I'm really curious to see what features that TI-Nspire has over my nearly 30 year old calculator and whether or not it is worth the money. (Although to be fair, I only use a basic scientific / programmer calculator on a daily basis, I don't really need a graphing calculator these days.) We felt the earthquake here in Machida too. It was long and rolling and my pendant lights were swaying quite a bit despite nothing moving around on the shelves or anything. Hopefully everyone is ok on west coast where the epicenter and tsunami warnings were.
@JDW-
@JDW- 6 ай бұрын
Thank you for your kind words and suggestions. If you are based in Machida Tokyo, then you probably felt the quake too, and you would be far enough from the epicenter, like me, to not have had any damage, thankfully. These quakes are pretty scary though, especially because "the big one" has been predicted to happen in our Nagoya area for many decades now. As to my channel content, as I said in the video, I am not driven by Analytics. If I was, I'd been doing calculator and "how to choose capacitors" videos more often. But I don't do those kind of videos often despite the vastly larger number of views because (1) that's not where my passion lies, and (2) there is much more diverse and interesting content that comes from vintage computing, especially vintage Macs. And now that I have an Apple IIc, I am exploring upgrades, which is why I am waiting for all of those to arrive so I can do a follow-up video about that. Reflowing solder joints with the FR-301 "desoldering" gun really does work surprisingly well. Glad to hear you bought one. Expensive, but a great investment if you do these kind of jobs at least once a month. As to calculators, nothing compares to the HP Prime when it comes to raw speed. Indeed, the only thing faster would be an emulated calculator on an iPhone, but they don't allow those to be used on standardized tests like the SAT. That doesn't matter to folks like you and I, but is a consideration for students who may be watching. I purchased a Prime for my two children, and my son was allowed to use his on his SAT earlier in 2023. But other than speed, it really boils down to the way you use the calculators, with "RPN" being the key difference, if you choose to use it. HP calculators can be set to use "Algebraic mode" instead, if the user prefers it, which is what the TI uses. Even so, the menu system is different too when comparing a modern TI to a modern HP like the Prime. I wish you a wonderful winter break. I get all of this week off!

Belated Happy New Year James! I was overseas on an extended family vacation so only catching up now. Looking forward to more amazing content from you this year, and hopefully less earthquake interruptions for you! I think you already have a fair idea why I'm interested in your content, but the reason I keep coming back is beyond my own interest - and it's simply the way you present your material. It comes across in a very self-deprecating fashion, and you don't pretend to know everything about everything, and you openly admit when you don't know something. This makes your videos (to me anyway) far more relatable than many other content producers out there. 👍

I really appreciate the variety of your videos and the "not a typical youtuber" feeling your videos have. No fancy green-screen effects, just someone making videos on topics that interest them. Really, I wish more channels were like yours rather than the other way around. With your reviews, in particular with the 121GW review, you present content in an informative way that gets to the point quickly while still conveying a complete representation of the product you're reviewing. You really do a good job of that. I think I first stumbled on your channel via a video you did covering a set of axial component lead benders from Probe Master, which I ended up buying and use quite frequently. I also ended up buying an HP-12c Platinum based on your review video and then later the HP-15c Collector's Edition when I found one on sale on ebay just because I like the 12c so much. I can't wait for the Rigol review, as I haven't given thought to purchasing a scope, but I'm happy to find out about a brand that's okay with users making modifications to their products. Also, I had no idea that you lived in Japan. I wouldn't mind some vlog from Japan style videos if that was something you ever considered.
@JDW-
@JDW- 6 ай бұрын
A VLOG showing Japan would be something rather new and interesting for me. Basically, that means I take a camera around while shooting some interesting sights and talking. I do a little of that in my Rode microphone review video here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y7GYrLqAuLi2das.html The aim of that was merely to test the mic outdoors though, so it really isn't focused on showing the sights of Japan. It just happens that I captured some of the area near the home where I live to make that video. Glad to hear you found the ProbeMaster video helpful, and that you purchased a SpeedyBends as well. The HP 15c is a really neat calculator, and the only one I actually prefer more is the 16c because I program code at work in Assembly language and do number conversions a lot. The 16c is great for that. It seems you've never owned an oscilloscope, so I can't really say if you "need" one, but you would need a good multimeter to be in the hobby of vintage computing or working with old electronics. A scope is only really needed when you want to examine noise on voltages you measure, or when you absolutely need to check signals and waveforms, which isn't often the case. You tend to measure DC voltage levels more than anything else, which most multi-meters can do. Some people supplement their multimeter with an LCR meter like the DE-5000, in order to check capacitor ESR. I have a DE-5000 and highly recommend those. So I would say a scope would be a third purchase after one already owns a good multimeter and LCR meter, and then only if you really need to check noise and AC/DC waveforms. However, the price of the Rigol DHO804 is shockingly low for what you get, plus you can hack it to become a 100MHz bandwidth scope with twice the memory it originally had. To me, that's just magical! If you want to see one of the most comprehensive overview videos about the DHO804 scope that I own, check out the one by Dave Jones here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iZ6apdN01MDdqGw.html

Happy New Year, JDW! I am glad you are safe. I certainly watch your channel to learn things that are not covered much elsewhere (your insightful renovation of the 400k and 800k floppy drives were some of the first videos I found, and are excellent!) I subscribe because you continue to show such material. However, if you simply did a recap video for a Mac you own, I would watch that too. Perhaps like many in the vintage computer community, I find simple pleasure in watching old computers being restored, whether that's recapping or retrobrite, SE/30 reloaded, etc. However, you might have one advantage over many KZfaqrs out there covering vintage Macs, which is your electrical engineering background. I would deeply value a walk through the electronics side of the Macs to understand how it all works, e.g. what certain chips do and why, how timing circuits work on the Mac (a great use for your new oscilloscope!), etc. That video you did on recapping the Apple hard drive power supply was the first (if not ONLY) video I've seen that took noise and jitter into account when choosing capacitors for the switch-mode power supply. That was an eye-opener. Maybe I am one of the few who would love to see such a deep dive into the genius of Burrell Smith and other talent at Apple, but I do believe that the 'inside' of the Mac is just as iconic as the 'outside'. There were so many "firsts" with Apple products. Best wishes.

Amiga! Very interesting. I have a number of vintage Macs, and now a real Apple IIc, along with my HP calculators, but I've never owned an Amiga before. I've merely read a lot about them. Very fascinating machines, really. One thing I've discovered about the Apple II is how much more advanced the C64 was in comparison, especially when it came to audio and graphics. I've never owned a C64, but many of my friends did back in the 80's, and I still vividly remember how amazing they were, and of course, I can see KZfaq videos such as from 8-bit Guy about how much better the graphics and audio were on that machine which was significantly cheaper than the Apple IIc. And of course, the Amiga line was even better, rivaling the Macintosh in many ways, and with some models upgradable to a 68060 processor! So I can understand your passion for that computing platform even without having used one. Have a great New Year's!

Regardless of how we personally feel about the people who either founded or shaped Apple though, you and I and everybody else in the vintage Apple community are in the same boat. We are PASSIONATE USERS who never personally interacted with or got to know people like Woz or Jobs or even Tim Cook. We simply know how they either supported or killed off a technology we love. And maybe we know a little about them from books and articles we've read. But at the end of the day, love 'em or hate 'em, these people gave life to Apple. Our believed tech wouldn't exist without them. And while Tim Cook didn't directly coach individual engineers toward a goal like Steve Jobs did (or kill the Newton or bash the Apple II, as Steve did either), Cook kept the company alive, post-Jobs, and also created an incredible amount of shareholder value too. Every AAPL owner knows that quite well. So I try to view "the big picture" when it comes to Apple. That helps me consider how and if the good outweighs the bad. Perhaps I'm more of an optimist than most, but I see more good than bad. And that positive feeling about Apple of old and the Apple of 2024 helps me maintain a passion for what I show in my videos. Because when the passion is gone, it's hard to keep going. Best wishes to you and your family in 2024!

What do you think of Swiss Micros?

I don't mean to be controversial or say anything negative toward those who are Swiss Micros fans, but I personally like the keys of HP calculators better, in terms of the shape and feel. Even among HP calculators, keys differ. Some of the best keys were on the 28S and 48G series. Some people dislike the rubbery flat feel of the 50g keys, but it's such a fantastic calculator you tend to forgive that. All said, if Swiss Micros would create beveled keys akin to what the 48g or 28S has, it would be a ball knocked out of the park. Because in terms of functionality, Swiss Micros has a lot to offer.

Well for what it's worth I'm here for your Apple videos since I'm also a vintage Mac fan. Your videos are always well produced so it's appreciated all the time you put into them. I enjoy them very much.
