I like the Hapstone system as it is very versatile. The RS Black system you're using is worth the extra money as it's cheaper than buying the angle finder, screw driver , blade stop separately. Hapstone sells Naniwa stones and Kuromaku stones for it, and a lot more. That being said, i'll stick with the original precision adjust and my DMT bench stones for now. Thunderbird Gear sells the fillet knife (full flat ground) blade clamps separately.

In regards to clamping FFG knives, Hapstone makes spring clamps that have jaws that spread in the back to pinch the blade that may work better. With the CBN stones, those ones appear to have not been lapped and don't have much abrasive exposed so they cut quite slowly (but polish better). Once I lapped mine the 80 grit stone became quite a beast since more grit was exposed. They are made by compressing the abrasive and binder in a mold under many tonnes of pressure so they are quite flat/mild when new. As for the angle changing on longer knives, the angle only truly changes when the edge gets closer/farther from being perpendicular with the clamp bar so on tips, bellies, recurves etc. If the knife edge is straight the angle stays the same no matter if it is 3" or 30" long. Clamping tip for that Lionsteel (and others): If you moved the right side clamp out more so it was clamped near the handle, there is a much larger flat surface there which could make for a more solid hold overall on knives that don't have a bit flat near the tip.

Couple points I missed. The stone holder is spring tensioned so it's not necessary to loosen the screw on the front of the holder to change stones. It’s adjustable for using different size stones 6” vs 4”. The knob at the back of the rotating clamp assembly is to adjust the detent. It’s not necessary to tighten it once it’s adjusted properly. There is a micro adjustment on the top of the pedestal.

I like this type of video. One issue I like addressed is service and spare parts. In this case extra screws for the clamps etc, in an ideal world they would be included in kit.🎉 Hapstone store also had CBN stones expensive Jared says they may cut better or at least faster.

I make handles for the Hapstone RS that stops the rod from poking you in the hand as you use it. If you are interested let me know and I can provide more information. Thanks for the video!!!!

265? I just ordered one two days ago directly from hapstones New Jersey warehouse for 199 shipped. I got some of their premium diamond stones as well and they were pricey for sure. but 265 is pretty high from what I saw.

Canadian dollar vs USD. Kevin and Thunderbird Gear are located in Canada thus the "higher" prices.
