Harbor Freight 17" Drill Press Unboxing and Setup - I got super lucky and was able to pick up this HF drill press for a song. So I thought I'd share the unboxing and setup of this tool so you can see that HF does indeed make some quality tools. This drill press is easily on par with tool two to three times it's cost.

Any ideas on a good mobile base for this?

Red Beard and The Den of Tools For safety, isn't this type of drill meant to bolted to the floor? Like you said, its center of gravity is high. Of course, you living in a rental house that can't be done without owner's permission.

Red Beard and The Den of Tools Buy some angle iron and some casters from HF and bolt one up. Or weld one up. I know you've been drooling for this press Red. Happy to see you got it!

What about tapping some bolt holes on the cast iron base and attach two wheels on the back so iff you tilt the drill the wheels would contact the floor. Note an extra piece of steal may be needed to extend the base place to allow for clearance.

Another option is build a platform like any other you can find on Google. But attach a bottom plate with 4 hydraulic cylinders to that plate then mount those to the platform and run some tubing careful to keep it sheilded. Attaching a Handel or motorized pump. A little more expensive, but hey.

Gotta add a lot of weight at the base, get some good casters and make the base 150lbs+ without the drill.

I bought my Taiwanese. test Rite 13" drill press from a store called Handyman in 1979. Is still going strong. I did a couple mods on it over the years. One for slowing down the spindle for drilling big holes. I enjoy your videos 👍

Good thing I read all the comments. I too was gonna suggest the HF furniture dolly. Something that top heavy seems could use a wider base.

I made a base out of plywood and casters the dimensions are 36“ x 24 and then you can put tools on the side to weigh it down The harbor freight welding cart works great and you have drawers to put your drill bits in.

I know its lots of work but weld to brackets on the back foe two wheels to be just an in or so off the ground then check with your local stores see if they have any of those moveable stairs that you can take the front leaver wheels off of and mount to the front so while it's in place and in use its on the base and sturdy but when you need to move it just step on the front wheels they swing down pushing the front up onto the wheels tilting the press just enough for the back wheels to grab and push it where needed then drop the front back down and bam you flat on the base and sturdy I think the bigest issue is gonna be the attaching everything to the base as cast iron isnt the best for welding but I hope the idea works out for you

If it were me, I would buy for those floor creepers so you can get underneath your car and a sheet of three-quarter inch plywood and put everything together and see if it would bolt up right on there. You would have to find a way to break it or chalk the wheels but you may be able to work that out. Perhaps you can do a video and let us know what you figure it out.

Red, your human counter part has a look alike all the way back here in Plattsburg, Missouri. His name is Norman Carlock, you can look him up on Facebook, he is even a computer Geek and one of the best Network Admin's I have ever worked with. You and he could pass for twins. Except he is a little whipped and has no seance of humor about most things. He is really a very great guy. May be your could start a contest for finding your long lost twin???

I'm 6'5 and needed to actually raise my drill press so I wasn't working at waist height. Had scraps and made a wide base and box out of 2x6's and filled with cement bag. Assembled Mobile base to it and solid as a rock. How can I send you pictures?

Any suggestions to keep the drill press work surface from rusting? My shop is unheated and over the winter the work surfaces on drill press and band saw developed some surface rust. It was easy to steel-wool off but it cant be good for the machines.

Mark Baldwin , being from the humidity soaked south, I have this problem super bad. What I do is use some carnuba paste wax and keep my table saw and drill press coated with that. I have to reapply it regularly but it works. Started doing it this past fall and did it 2 times over the winter and so far no rust.
