Just bought one on a whim also, cuz I needed to take a large Electric motor apart including Belt Pulley assembly , rear fan, and the bearings , it worked flawlessly. What I DID notice is that the threads were running very tight, without even putting any pressure on could hardly turn it even with my 1/2" drive .. So I took the jaws off, took it apart, and used some spray Lube on the threads and worked the bolt in and out a couple times.. Smooth as glass now ( highly recommended before using it) so now it centers nice, and effortlessly did the job I needed it to do. The pulley wheel was no joke since it was Alum on a steel shaft and probably HEATED before Slid on so it was like a zero clearance fit.. and it handled it nicely as well.. the large bearings on that motor came off like Butter. So I cant complain , this puller (the 8" ) already paid for itself. , imo.

+Jeff from Jersey Thanks for the info Jeff! I'm glad they worked out for your project. Nothing wrong with saving some cash to get something done- especially if they're not going to be used all that often. Take care, G.

I used them and they do the job. just grease up them threads good and they will work. make sure you line up the pulley as straight as you can, turn the rod slowly to apply some tensions, if your happy with the position, tighten the nuts on the claws and start turning that rod. it will do the job. I didn't have an issue with the tip moving. once I centered and applied pressure it didn't move.

ghostses no problem! I was also skeptical about them but decided to give it a shot. I was able to push an axle shaft out of a hub bearing on a old Honda prelude. thing was really siezed up in there and usually when that happens I have to let it sit over night in oil and than wack the heck out of the axle shaft to force it out. I decided to try to to use one of these this time to see if I could avoid all that. to my surprise it popped it out, took about 5 minutes of slowly turning with an impact gun not allowing the rod to get too hot. also keep an eye on the bolts and nuts that secure the claws if they aren't tight enough the nuts will start to walk off, just tighten it if you see that and keep turning and it should do the job.

Very cool stuff! Many go the brute force option right out of the gate- even when using a puller. Then they might wonder why the tool broke- regardless of brand. I put a load on them, then hit the end to help shock things loose. Slow and steady usually wins the race- and with no collateral damage. G.

Hello I completely agree with you, just bought these pullers and while I was trying the remove my fly wheel VX 110 Yamaha one of the jaws broke off and I got hit by on my left hand, I certainly do not recommend to purchase it.

I have had that set for 25 years at least. It is better than nothing but not by much. However the price of the name brand pullers is several times what the whole set sells for. My issues with it were that the steel is too soft. The threads will strip and the jaw hooks are too bulky for many jobs. They also slip off easily. I have ground a negative angle in them but they just don't have good geometry for pulling. Also the tip needs a bearing so that it can rotate while screwing it down. Because there is no bearing a lot of your force goes lateral and you lose the downward pressure needed. Greatly increases the torque needed to turn the thread. A clamp arrangement to hold the jaws in place is also needed. I have used them and they are ok with light pulls but on a hard one they are really lacking.

SAFETY NOTE -- Always try and get the jaws of these as close to the center of the shaft you are working on. If the jaws are too splayed out they can easily pop off while under tension and or can break the part you are working on. I recently made the mistake of using these on an air compressor pulley made of cast iron and quickly broke off part of the pulley where the belt sits. Had I originally placed the puller through the spokes it wouldn't have happened. I now have to spend $80 to replace the pulley.

Exactly right Jeff! I've made similar mistakes myself throughout my life. Those are the hardest lessons when the good turns to bad and costs money- but they will always stay with you for the future. Take care, G.

Thanks G, always dependable reviews! Almost bought these the other day and glad I didn't now. Miss my old 2.5 ton SnapOn set! Only need them once in a while but would rather have something a bit better as a frustration relief and not have to spend a day modifying them. Do have their Bearing puller set...again once in a while usage and somewhat marginal.

Thanks PJ! You know I call'em like I see them. Yeah, I wouldn't mind having a Snappy set- but really don't use them enough to justify. Unless they upped the quality on these since my post, I think you've made the correct decision. I know I've got my monies worth out of these but it was a clunky time to get it....lol. I'm assuming you have the same puller set as I. I've not had any problems with mine. Probably not the greatest but it's never let me down. Have you had problems with yours? Good to hear from you. Hope all is well, G.

@@ghostses Always a pleasure to touch base with you G! Not using them enough is why I got rid of my SnapOn set. One of those things you kick yourself for when you need them. @¿@ ;-P Yes, I do have the same bearing puller set and it's gotten me through a few things. I found the threads for the standoffs and the standoffs themselves are sloppy 1a/b threads at best and a couple of the standoffs aren't straight at the studs. I found if you tighten them solid against the puller and snug up the T-bar, straighten the shaft and keep an eye on it while applying pressure, they do pretty good. But with the extensions and a long distance pull it becomes a compounded issue. Found this out when I was restoring my old iron 1950 DP and a long reach on one of the the quill bearings. The reason I looked at the pullers was getting a pulley off a 1hp motor that had welded itself on the shaft the other day...ended up jigging up the small bearing puller to finally get it off...worked fine but not the first choice for that op. My best to you and your family, G!

Nice review. I agree with you. I had Craftsman pullers years ago (mostly borrowed/lost/stolen at this point) which were better designed at keeping that tip centered. The arms also seemed more solid with less play. Harbor Freight has a lot of good stuff, but they do still carry some junk too which is what these look like.

I haven't read any comments yet but, I broke the 6 in. and then the 8” in less than 2 minutes pulling a front hub assembly on my 1999 Merc. Mountaineer. not happy. both broke at the same spot on the bar both times. not happy. both broke where the threads come out of the back/top of the tripod. i have a feeling it probably depends on the quality of the steel at the time of casting. Since some seem to be better than others.

Not good! If you're within 90 days- get them replaced by HF- and use the replacements for lighter jobs. Then get a better puller for your task. I make these due but they're lacking for sure. Take care, G.

I realize this is 4 months later but have you seen how much effort it takes to to pull the hubs on any Ford SUV of that vintage or even newer? Harbor freight pullers are not going to get that job done. You need the hub buster and a quality hub puller set for that job

I used an 8 inch puller on a small engine flywheel, first time I used it the the threads stripped right off the press bolt. It was one of the biggest POS purchases I've made from Harbor Freight. Do yourself a favor, if you pull a lot of pulleys, flywheels, or clutches, get yourself a bar style puller. I'm starting out as a mechanic in a small equipment shop and was trying to save some money by having this thing. Wound up getting a puller set BOGO off the MAC tools truck that had a bar style puller which has pulled some very difficult items off shafts using straight impact. Save your $20 on this one, invest in a better tool if you are going to pull a lot of things.

In my case the bolts, holding the links, broke while pulling a detached shock from the yoke. The shock came out half way but the bolt snapped, that’s the weakest point in my case, I may replace them with grade 8 bolts

hi ghostses.. my issue is I rented a two-third jaw puller model 27078 and I used it to I had to change the water pump in a 2006 Ford Fusion which has a water pump and a belt around it and a pulley on the cam the problem is I successfully removed the pulley and can't see after I put the water pump in that went in OK however. I can't see how to use the same jaw puller like the big jaw puller which I took off with to put it back. There is no way you can attach these jaw pullers anywhere to put the pulley. back. can you help me if you know anything about it thank you CLE v E

mr ok I looked up the pump for you car, and it looks like the pulley is held onto a flange on the pump with three bolts from the front. Unless I'm wrong, it looks like a puller isn’t required to remove the pulley, just remove the three bolts and it should come off the old pump. The new pump should have the same flange on it where the old pulley can be bolted on. It sounds like you may have removed the pulley and flange from the old pump. Take a close look for the three bolts that should be there. They might be coverd up with a bunch of grease and grime. There are some pulleys, like on a power steering pump, that require a special tool to press the pulley back on the shaft. Pullers like the ones shown here only pull things off. Hope this helps and good luck, G.
@ghostses

mr ok The first search I did was for a Fusion S. They show the flange I was talking about. I looked up a Fusion SE and it looks like a different pump where the pulley is pressed onto the shaft. It looks like the pulley comes with the new pump. I can't tell how it would be installed with a special tool since they usually have something to atatch the tool to. I really don't know man. Hey how r u? I did use the puller which has to be used to get the whole pump off I had to install a new water pump couldn't just change the one in the front if you know this water pump for this 2006 Ford Fusion Model S II letter V 6 cylinder it requires for you to move the harmonic balancer pulley before installation. I did that remove the whole pump itself installed the new one. It was rough putting the homeowners how money balancer back. I install the balancer in the same alignment same spacing then put the belt on like the belt shoul put a wire tie on the built-in pump the engine slowly to work the cell phone that works perfectly my daughter is happy with her car the pulley works fine the new water pump works fine thank you for your help you are greatly greatly appreciated. Best wishes. Really thanks for your time and getting back in responding trying to help me out. I wish I would have recorded it because there isn't a single water pump like the one I did in the whole of You Tube. Oh well thanks again really.

mr ok Glad you got it sorted out. I didn't realize you needed to pull the balancer off to get to the pump. There is a special tool to install balancers for sure. I've not done automotive work for decades, but have some experience with it so I thought I'd try to help you out. Too bad you could not find a video for that car on KZfaq. I'm sure it would have helped you and many others out as well. Take care, G.

Yeah that's okay I wish I would have recorded to help someone who may encounter the same problem I did. Keep up the good work I appreciate everything you do Mr G. The whole water pump was bad the water pump model comes in two pieces the water pump itself and the shield housing. The shield was damaged. Also have to install a new belt, and a t-shaped hose connector and new clamps. It was fun. Thanks for getting back to me. DIY people like myself enjoy getting the hands dirty. I wish you the very best and keep putting out the good stuff. Be well.
