Thank You!!! I built a Ironton 4ft. x 8ft. Folding Utility Trailer Kit which is nearly identical to your Harbor Freight model. The rear lights wouldn't work at all while the front side running lights worked fine. I saw your video and decided to do a quick test; ran a wire from the small white ground wire connection straight back to one of the rear light bolts. Sure enough you were right! That light worked in all states (blinker light, brake light, steady red running light) with that ground wire. Now I'll fix it up permanently like you showed. You've saved me countless hours of troubleshooting, customer support, and who knows where else. Thanks again!

Yes, Harbor Freight uses the vehicle (trailer) frame as the ground, just as every manufacturer does with their cars and trucks.

The Baer Brothers .. The biggest problem is the tilt feature. Until the paint wears off (metal to metal), it's going to be hard to get a good electrical ground connection through that. One option is a short jumper wire between the frame and tongue arm at that pivot point (my choice). Another is ground wires from the lights all the way to the front.

@fbaer4686 5 жыл бұрын
@@dwightstewart7181 Yeah I thought about that. I left a loose loop at the pivot points.

When I began running the wires on mine, I immediately noticed the lack of ground wire running to the rear of the trailer. Instead of farting around with grinding paint and trying to make the circuit complete, I just ran a ground wire to the back for the lights. Seemed to be a simpler solution in the long run. As this thing goes down the road and bounces and swings, theres really no way of telling if the circuit remains complete and I'd rather just be sure and run extra wire.
@fbaer4686
@fbaer4686 3 жыл бұрын
That's a good way to do it. It should work just fine. Only one more wire to bounce around and fail prematurely... Just a thought...

Instead of grinding on the trailer which will introduce rust, you can merely tie in two separate ground wires off the pigtail and run both to the back of the trailer to connect the ground to the lights. This method eliminates grounding to the trailer altogether as it gets the grounding directly from the towing vehicle.

You should have a brown and a Green wire going to the brake and signal lights. Are they both hot with the blinker on and someone on the brake? They make a cheap ($3) tester at Harbor Freight. It plugs into the car end of the connector and tells you that you have a good signal on all circuits. I would check that first. If all your signals are good, trace the green wire down and make sure you have a signal all the way back to the light. Again, double check all of your grounds. You can check ground resistance with a good digital volt ohm meter.

My tail lights have a white wire coming out. Where does that go? I screwed ground screws and attached them to the frame back there but that didn’t work. I attached them to the bolt on the light but that didn’t work. I even tried jumping them to the ground wire at the front of the trailer but that didn’t work.

I don't understand what you mean by grounding source. I connected with Electrical tape all wires, Brown to brown on every point. On the back lights there is three wires a white wire with a round connector, a brown wire and a yellow or green wire, depending on which side it is. I spliced into the brown wires on each side for the side lights and connected all brown wires on each side. Always using electrical tape. I didn't use the wire nuts as they have never worked for me. I've done electrical work for years and wire nuts are a waste of time. I use electrical tape only after carefully twisting the wires together. I have spent many days assembling this trailer, and finally got it done as far as the frame. My next door neighbor, a Navy electrical man, told me the right way to wire this and it still doesn't work. Only the drivers side running light will light up. The instructions make no sense to me at all. I put this trailer together almost all by looking at the pictures. I feel like taking the trailer down to the harbor freight store and parking right in front of their door and demanding that they fix it! No other trailer store in town will touch this because I didn't buy their expensive trailers. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Steve Nelson nevetsnoslen1@gmail.com

Thank You So Much!!! It's Working! I watched your nice video and saw the areas that you ground off the paint, and I also looked for the small hole in the tongue to attach the white wire to. There was no hole and so I drilled a hole in the tongue frame and screwed in a screw with the wire and a couple of washers. As I ground off paint and reattached each connection, the lights came on. I knew my wire connections were good so it had to be that paint. I know they mean well and don't want the trailers to rust, so that's probably why they gob a tone of paint on there. This kind of thing should be included in these crappy plans. Plus stickers or stamps in the metal to denote each part. I could have saved a lot of time if there was some sort of stickers on the parts. I haven't yet figured out where the carriage bolts go. There are 4 of them. I suspect that they are for the top corners so that wood will lay down flatter on the frame. I'll check that before I mount the wood sections. But Thanks Again for your help!!! I got it done by going around at various points where the wires connected with the frame, and sanding off small patches of paint. I learned this from your video here when you said that HF was using the frame as the ground. So sanding off small patches of paint where the wires connected with the frame really did the trick! I don't intend for this trailer to be left out in the rain and so some small sanded spots here and there are no problem. If a person was going to be leaving the trailer out in the weather, then re-coating sanded areas with some sort of clear coating after connecting the wires to the frame, would be advisable. Since I completed my trailer and put on the floor and removable sides, its been in constant use and I haven't had the opportunity to actually fold it up. I did a test folding before installing the flooring and it folded well then. It looks and works great with my all solid white painted walls, (for later advertising areas), and people are always asking me; "Is that a Harbor Freight folding trailer?" I proudly say yes and I built it myself. I take an element of pride in doing and building things myself. Other examples of recent projects are a new chicken house, designed and built by me, and a Kentucky Long Rifle Flintlock that I built from a kit from Traditions. Thanks for your advise on my trailer friends, Steve Nelson *Also see my FREE eBooks at: Smashwords DOT com
