Basic wiring walk-around, slack loops, and connections on Harbor Freight 1195 folding trailer kit

Detailed walk-around of where I routed the lighting wires on a Harbor Freight 1195 lb. folding utility trailer kit. The instructions are very vague and the wiring components they provide are not ideal or complete. Not complaining, it’s a $520 trailer. I’m sure someone can find fault in what I’ve done here so far.
@MotherDaughterProjectsDIY have a very detailed set of videos which deviate from my wiring, but nonetheless a nice resource for building this trailer:

Thanks for the information. Plus, I've watched some of the mother daughter videos, and she does have her stuff together.

I used her tips but I like you’re wire setup better. I’m copying you. Thanks for the video I appreciate it. You have a blessed day!!!

Back at ya man. Glad you liked it. I recommend scaling down in wire loom sizes from 1/2" and 3/8", to 3/8" and 1/4", but like anything it's trial and error.

Excellent vid! Thanks for posting this! I just wired mine. Yes - be wary of passing wires through metal. I caused a fire in my truck way back doing that. I love conduit! And yeah - you bet both your videos very helpful!!!

Thanks, glad it was helpful! I have since wrapped those unprotected wires in several layers of electrical tape, best I could do for now. Unfolded the trailer just today and made sure to inspect them.

A few tips. 1. Use 1/4" loom instead so that they will fit through the holes properly. The wires are tight but it works. Zip tie every 18" keeps them from unravelling. 2. Don't run the wires through the frame holes where each of half of the trailer meets. When it pinches, it will cut the wires. Ask me how I know. 3. Don't run the wires through the tongue at all. Run it straight from the frame to the vehicle. That way you can open and collapse the tongue without worrying about any wires. 4. You may want to reinforce the area where the rear leaf spring rubs against the frame. The rubber pad that they provide comes off after a few miles causing the leaf to rub through the frame. I placed a piece of delrin since it has low surface friction secured with a hitch pin through the frame so that it doesn't fall off. 5. Replace the metal fenders with plastic fenders. Those metal ones will fall off after a couple thousand miles because of metal fatigue from the vibration. It will most likely puncture the tires or fling out at another vehicle. Very dangerous.

Thanks for your input. If I were routing again, I would probably do #1 and 2, for sure. I wrapped a bunch of electrical tape around the wires in the folding area, and with the slack I have there it seems to not be too hard on the wires (yet). On #5 I am probably going to get some sort of strap or bolt/spacer to attach the upper fender to my removable sides to dampen the vibration but haven't done it yet. #4 I'll have to look, I don't remember any rubber pads at all and might not completely understand the issue.

Good call on the self tapping screws. Just wired mine up and only one of the side running lights works haha. Obviously not a good connection through all that paint.

You should paint the coupler and all of the shiny bolts

Honestly I wish I had the patience to have re-painted the entire frame before I built it, since I hear the paint doesn't hold up great over time. But since I keep this thing folded in my garage 95% of the year it's something I'm willing to live with and hope it holds up for a good number of years.

@@brianh1161 True, I just painted all my hardware, using Rust Oleum Farm paint called Harvester red, in a can from Walmart, matches close to the original red of the trailer.

@@AmericaFirst069 Good on you for taking the initiative, I bet it will hold up for a nice long time. That said, if you devise anything clever to reinforce those flimsy fenders, let me know!

@@brianh1161 What bothers me about the fenders are is that they wiggle too much, and make noise. So I was thinking about putting a bushing in between the inner part of the fender, and then running a machine screw, and tighten with a nut to stabilize them.

@@AmericaFirst069 Yeah that’s kind of the idea I’ve been mulling around, a bushing with a bolt run thru my wooden trailer sides to the bent flange edge of the fender. Another thing to disassemble though.

All those grounds are ridiculous. Run a dedicated ground from each taillight up, tie in the side markers and straight to the harness ground. Bypass the trailer all together, it's completely unreliable, it's all painted and bolted together, nothing is connected.

A common ground wire is the best. But I ain’t got time for that. My lights have worked in the rain. If ya need a folding trailer to store in the garage, these are pretty much your only option. I only use mine 3-4 times a year. It’s fine if you aren’t depending on it for frequent heavy duty use. Thanks for posting.
