ATTENTION HARBOR FREIGHT SHILLS AND FANBOYS... WATCH TO END before you comment! This is a review of Harbor Freight Tools newer ICON double box end ratcheting wrench set and halfway through this video I EXPOSE who actually designed these icon wrenches and where else you can find them.
Harbor Freight tools made a big splash when they first dropped these new ICON tools several months back. It started with harbor freight giving youtubers free Icon tool sets in exchange for good reviews. From there it quickly escalated into guys on youtube getting free $5000 Icon toolboxes all for the sake of a good video review. I don't know about you, free tools are one thing, but when a company starts handing out FREE ICON toolboxes... SOMETHING IS UP.
We all know Harbor freight Isn't giving these toolboxes away out of the kindness of their heart but how is any of that supposed to help you guys decide if these ICON wrenches are for you? So today I'm going to tell you the truth about ICON tools and ICON wrenches. I'm not on the take from ICON tools or Harbor Freight tools so were going to see what a guy who's not on Harbor Freight tools payroll, ICON tools payroll, or doesn't constant push Harbor Freight videos all day, thinks about this ICON tools wrench set.

If it was made in Taiwan, it was made by Kabo. They make Blue Point, Pittsburgh Pro, ICON, Tekton, Capri, Carlyle, Titan, and a bunch of other brands. ICON has a premium baked in the price though.

Great video. I like the research you showed. I have had these wrenches for months and love them. I have not had to warranty one yet, but based on previous HF warranty issues, its an easy process. I have been incredibly happy with all of my ICON purchases so far. I had my rollaway stolen years ago full of old american made craftsman professional and snapon tools. Ever since I had been working out of a box of mismatched junk tools. Now I am buying up all the ICON I can afford. This is the first time I have caught your video, and I like it because it is very informative. I am a regular customer of Harbor Freight, so this was of special interest to me. I don't like their policy of requiring the original receipt and they only give you 90 days. As long as the item has their company's SKU number they know that it came from one of their stores, but that isn't their policy unfortunately. My son and I bought a Cen-Tech battery charger and a jump starter and paid over $100 for both pieces. They both quit working after 1 use and we didn't have the original receipt. I no longer buy that type of tool from them. Looking forward to future videos.

Nice comment, I also purchased my core set of tools from Craftsman back in the late 70s and early 80s. All USA made combination wrenches, six point sockets and teardrop and round head ratchets, 1/4 3/8 1/2. Still have them all and use them today. Although I have added a lot hand tools from Gearwrench, Tekton, Sunex, Capri Tools, Proto, SK, Carlyle, Williams, and some others. The most important thing to remember about harbor freight is that they are NOT a manufacturer; they are a distributor. They find generic Chinese and Taiwanese manufactured tools (not always a bad thing) and they rebrand and sell them at a markup for the marketing and warranty. They’re in business to make money, there’s nothing wrong with that, if you do your research you can find Icon branded tools on Amazon or elsewhere for significantly cheaper but then good luck with trying to warranty a broken tool. Because of how harbor freight operates, some of their tools are going to be tool truck quality because they’re the same manufacturers, and some of them are flat out trash (pliers and screw drivers). Great video! Thank you for the review!

You see this a lot in power tools as well. TTI owns Milwaukee, Ryobi, Bosch, and many others and while there may be some unique features to some of those brands you can tell by handling them back to back they're likely coming out of the same factories. It's the illusion of choice. Pretty much every item in your average grocery store is produced by one of nine corporations.

great video Garnett i don't understand why people have such a hard time understanding how you have to pay for quality tools don't matter who makes them and then they cry when they break them you need to know the limitations of the tool the ratchet wrench is not really intended to break the faseners free and they are not going to take the pressure of you bouncing on them if you use your tool the way they are intended they should serve you well that is why any mechanic worth his salt has tools to sacrifice wether that means cutting bending or wielding the tool to the fastener you do what needs to be done to get the job done

Haven’t even seen these yet (Icon ones), but my coworker has the Mountain. When you held them up, that was the first brand that came to mind. I’ve considered getting a set of these, but I’m not a big fan of the spline drive. It’s handy, but I find it to be a pain to get on or off sometime. If I do get a set, I’d go with either Carlyle or Icon due to ease of warranty. I’ve heard Mountain is hell to warranty, HF isn’t too hard to find (for most), and NAPAs are close to any civilized area. Although I think we overthink warranties sometime, I’d absolutely make sure you can warranty these easily. On another note, great review and info. You just earned a new subscriber.

you don't need a receipt or phone number for lifetime warranty items at harbor freight. Those cashiers you spoke to are just confused or misinformed. They're taught to tell people that the phone numbers help them with warranty claims whenever people resist giving out their phone numbers, but they don't fully understand why they're saying it (which is because harbor freight really wants them to get phone numbers). It's only necessary for items that have a limited warranty period. That said, I would be wary of any store brand that doesn't carry the store's name. Lowes used to have a great warranty but now they're trying to act like Kobalt isn't their own brand, and telling customers to "call Kobalt" when they want to warranty an item that they bought in the store. Just happened to me this morning

I have a feeling icon brought out these wrenches mainly because they are very popular and wanting to sell the same thing but in their brand and stuff. I feel like the main reason you buy these is for the warranty
@RockWarsWorldwide
@RockWarsWorldwide 3 жыл бұрын
So basically what you said is they are tool truck quality and infact are the same exact wrenches as the Carlyle set. What you neglected to mention is the are $100 cheaper than the exact same wrenches simply bc they don't say Carlyle on them. Also your warranty information is misleading. I have never once been required to present either a receipt or phone number at Harbor Freight to warranty a tool. Just take it to the register and they just tell you to go get another.

The thing I am impressed with about Icon tools is that they are tool truck quality at a lower price, but have a no questions asked warranty. They also seem to be sturdier than the Pittsburgh line up from Harbor Freight.

"They also seem to be sturdier than the Pittsburgh line" I think that's a key point. HF decided to move into the higher quality ranges but not abandon their budget limited customers. In the long run, a good marketing move.

I personally cant stand those wrenches but I loved the previous non swivel head ones that are getting harder to find everyday it seems .. I got mine from matco thinking if I ever had an issue I could get a replacement right...wrong they keep trying to give me a swivel head one ...I have a whole set of non swivel wrenches so no I'm not going to just have one oddball swivel head in my non swivel set ...my OCD cant do it lol But I've broken so many of the swivel head versions maybe I'm too hard on them idk ..I just wish I could find a dependable way to get the old ones in 17 years owning them only broken 1 and that was all me lol

Mostly for the convenience of having someone come to you since it’s hard to leave in the middle of your job to warranty something. Everyone’s situation is different. Also if your tool rep is good and you ask for a discount they give you one. My tool rep charged me double for a Milwaukee tool. I pointed that out jokingly and he showed up the next week with free batteries. There are perks to paying extra.

Icon is overpriced made in Taiwan stuff. ALL of those tools are available for less money in other brands. "ICON" doesn't make anything, Harbor Freight orders these runs from the same factories that make their Pittsburgh Pro stuff (and snap-on's "blue point", and the rest of them. . . . imagine paying MATCO prices for these things) They just have them slap whatever brand they want on them. Capri tools, Tekton tools, etc all do the same thing. You're right the "designed in USA" part was the LOGO and FONT they wanted on the already designed and ready to press tools. They DO NOT have the option of changing the width of the wrench or any other design features, and as such DO NOT have "engineers" that know about tools. They have designers that design ART. Harbor freight was ALREADY having those high quality manufacturers make stuff for them just look for the "made in Taiwan" marking on the box. They just didn't like the success they were having from the pittsburgh pro name, and figured they had an angle to pad profit margins. As such EVERYTHING in the ICON line is overpriced compared to other places where you can find that exact same tool with different engraving. The 3/4" breaker bar that HF sells for $89? ($72 with coupon) . . . Tekton sells the exact same one for $50, and so does Titan. Its that way across the board. If you bought ICON, you got ripped off. Period.
@chip7236
@chip7236 3 жыл бұрын
Some of what you said seems likely to be correct, however what you said about the breaker bars is not true. For one, the tekton is priced at $60. But the main thing you got wrong is the claim that they are the exact same tool. They are not, look them up. I don't know which design is better or stronger, but the point is they are not the same.

The other end of the tool could be designed by icon. The way patents work is a company can buy rights to make or buy the ends from the owner of the patent. They could design every other part down to the material choice and if the designers could have bought the end and designed the rest to conform to size of the other end. It's a wrench only so many ways to make one.
