In this video which I like to call the Double Box Destruction of the Harbor Freight Icon Double Box Flex Ratcheting Wrench Tool Set. We will be testing multiple sizes 10mm, 12mm, 13mm, 14mm, 15mm, 17mm and 19mm to failure. There are a few different areas where these could fail at and we will look at and review the yoke, pin, handle for flex and bending, and finally do we break or strip the internal mechanism. Remember these Double Box extra long flex ratcheting wrenches are not serviceable or repairable and have to be replaced when damaged and picking a company that allows for easy and dependable warranty is a major reason why I purchased this set.
The Icon Professional Double Box Flex Ratcheting Wrench is precision-machined for a perfect non-slip grip, and features a 90 tooth reversible ratcheting box end for easy fastener engagement without slippage and prevents fastener round-off, resulting in more efficient work. We use a premium chrome vanadium steel, with a tough and durable polished chrome finish that offers superior rust and corrosion resistance and prevents grease build-up. The flex box ends make it easier to work in tight spaces and reach around obstructions. Designed with comfort and efficiency in mind, the Icon™ Professional Double Box Flex Ratcheting Wrench offers a balanced handle design for a comfortable secure grip, and is backed by a hassle-free manufacturer's lifetime warranty.

The biggest problem with ratcheting wrenches is in the usage. They were not designed to break a bolt or nut loose , there are proper tools for that. These are designed to speed up the process after initial breakaway. Always use the proper tools for the task at hand and you will rarely have a failure... Unless you are buying your tools at the dollar store. An awesome review , very well 👍.

I felt this way for a while when I got the husky ones first. I saw the tech training me use the icons and I thought it was bad practice, but they are robust and can handle breaking a fastener loose. I still use the open end first if I have access, but I trust the ratchet end in tight spots.

Tools with lifetime warranties are like rental cars, if you don't beat the crap out of it once in awhile you aren't getting all the value for your money that you could. Just don't mention you had a 4' snipe on your 3/8" ratchet and bingo, fresh replacement.

I am very impressed with the high breaking torque. A 10mm nut would break far before 70- ft-lb is applied.

In my professional opinion as a mechanic for 20 years, this is a fantastic tool. The amount of torque applied before failure is well beyond what could be applied to nearly every faster of equal size on most vehicles, they would round or sheer well before the tool fails. Personally, if you're using this to break stuff free instead of a non ratcheting 6pt wrench, breaker bar, or at least a professional quality 1/2" ratchet and 6pt socket, you may want to rethink working on anything.

All impressive, the platinum tech is what convinced me to buy these.... I thought these were unnecessary until my buddy let me borrow them for a few months. They are unique and well worth, Ive cringed so many times watching him “trying” to break them in my shop. The gearwrench non-offset I had before these were absolute garbage! The 120xp had so much slop, and 13mm was closer to 13.5, 14m was closer to 9/16 etc, there were all slightly bigger.. awesome review thank you

I am no pro mechanic but you have to admit lifetime warranty for about the same price as truck brands and you can possibly get the same tool the same day at your local hf is a game changer and with for the most part a no questions asked warranty instead of waiting for the truck or sending it in the mail

I used the metric flank open ends to do alignments for a solid year, thousands. The wrenches held up great, the 13 showed the worst wear, white it still worked good it was missing all the teeth on the open end. Swapped them out for a nice new set with warranty.

I bought these completely blind not knowing a thing about them. I only got them because of the price point between these and the tool trucks. I have absolutely no complaints on them and would recommend anyone give them a try! .... I hate to throw exact numbers but I paid like $150 at HF compared to $500 plus on the snap on truck and $300 plus from my matco guy.

I'm pretty sure with that much torque any truck brand would bend or pin would have failed, give or take a little torque.. But or the price and not having to fight with a truck dealer to warranty these are a very good buy, Just my opinion. I'm not trying to hurt any tool truck brand fanboys' feelings, trust me I was also a toll truck fanatic before I realized I to put my kids thru college.

confirm for me that regardless of how well a wrench like this is made, you would use a different wrench or tool to break a nut/bolt loose, then use the ratcheting for speed? there is a set of metrics at a pawn shop for 70 bucks. they generally five me a discount to boot. I am off to the store!

I would be curious to know though if each size meets or exceeds the standard torque ratings for each size. I’ve never seen a 10mm be torqued to 70+ foot pounds. I could very well be wrong though.
@ionstorm66
@ionstorm66 2 жыл бұрын
The torque tests are more for removing stuck fasteners. That's the reason I own 8/10mm in 1/2 drive, sometimes you need the extra leverage to break it loose. The longer handle allows you to better control and feel the bolt moving. Makes it easier to work it back and forth as to not snap the bolt.

I have not bought many Icon tools, but the few I have impressed me enough to heavily bias me towards buying Icon in the future. I am picky when it comes to quality and usability, so I own a fair bit of Snap-On and Japanese hand tools. You can find better than Icon, but the gap does not justify the price for some brands in my mind.

I wanted to try and capture the visual on how much wrench flex there is depending on the size and torque. It’s actually a lot of work since it’s really like editing 3 videos that you have to sync and edit.
@DaleLucid
@DaleLucid 3 жыл бұрын
@@ClientGraphics The flex is why I noticed the camera. Maybe you can use a sharp finger snap. It can be easily cut out and should show up in the audio track of both cameras for alignment. You can set the overhead audio to zero when you don't need to alignment segments while editing. Just make more "snap" references where you think you'll need them.

To stop the failures at the yoke . Need the manufacturer to change from pressed pins to custom Allen cap screws or rivets in counter bored holes to prevent spreading of the yoke. I have a great neck 38002 1/2" x24" breaker bar that way I cannot seem to break.
@ClientGraphics

Might add a little thickness to get some good thread contact. It would help to make them field serviceable or to be able to swap heads. I know some companies have wanted this (Cornwell and Matco) but the manufacturer has been unwilling to make changes. Great potential just need a manufacturer that is open and willing to front the R&D cost

I had bad experience with the Icon 1/4 inch flex head ratchet (jammed at times) and 3/8 deep sockets (8 of them cracked from light use). Albeit it was when they 1st came out so I assume it was probably lower quality when they 1st came out. I’ve heard mostly great things from them recently.

Chris G10 the Icon flex head ratchets and sockets did have some serious problems when they first came out. I got the non-flex head ratchets and they were fine. They are not my favorite from a price or quality standpoint.

Personal experience has led me to avoid using those ratchet style wrenches (from various brands) to break torque or apply torque due to the internal mechanism deforming under torque and rounding off the bolt heads.

He didn't "sacrifice" anything; he wantonly destroyed tools, knowing they would be replaced. And it's not hard to suppose why these are now $225 in store instead of ~$150 like they used to be. Look, I appreciate knowing the limits of the tool, just as much as the next person, but it's not ethical to accept a free exchange, even if the exchange itself was part of the "test".

As a mechanic one older guy in my shop has snap on everything his sockets are all at least 15 years old he has never broken a socket however from use the sockets are so used and worn the side that snaps onto the impact gun is loose and the sockets fall off if you point the gun down snap-on will not warranty your sockets for this reason unless they crack or break.
