In this video I discuss what golf shaft stepping is and how it works. Then we go into the fitting studio to see what actually happens when you hard step or soft step a golf shaft.

Just tipped 1/2” a stiff Velocore + on a 4 wood, and it’s quickly become one of my favorite clubs. 104 driver ss and have played x for 20+ years, but I’ve found myself wanting more feel, which the stiff shaft has provided. The 1/2” tipping keeps spin and dispersion under control

Well done and interesting. I would have guessed the outcome to be quite different than the actual results suggested. You proved me wrong. Right on!

Stepping is definitely all about feel. I played a modus 120s soft stepped once and wanted something slightly lighter so I went to the modus 105s which is stiffer than the 120s and ended up soft stepping the 105s twice to get that desired feel

Years ago some of the taper tip shafts were only available in one inch increments so you tipped half of the shafts 1/2" to make a set. You often needed to ream the hosel to make the tipped shafts seat. (See the old Ralph Maltby Club Repair book.) It would be interesting to set the frequencies would be for tipped vs not tipped cut to the same length.

Interesting results with very small differences. Perhaps you could build on this with reg, stiff and X shafts?

I did know the soft step / hard step methods before, but what I am really would like to know: how are the main OEM are handling this? I remember a Mizuno MP25 iron set that I bought after a fitting. The nippon shafts that the set was build with, have been 3 i9 shafts and 3 i6 shafts. And also the head weight of the major manufactures are not identical. A Mizuno iron head is not as heavy as a Wilson iron head with the same number on. This is what I found out for myself. This means the shaft is maybe not working as it supposed to be. but it all comes down to feeling as your test tells us

Liked this video. Curious about how many feet of height would someone gain by weakening the loft 2 degrees with a 80 mph 7 iron swing ? Thanks for the informative video.

Perhaps this is a question more for the OEMs, but I'm curious about whether OEMs construct tapered tip sets based on clubhead weight, loft, or both. As with most of the industry, I'm guessing there isn't a standard. So the question is, if I want to pair a set of clubheads with a tapered tip set, would it help to know the clubhead weights/lofts used in the design of the shafts? And, if so, is it common for OEMs to provide that information? P.S.--Absolutely love your stuff, AJ. Godspeed in your new Elite Fit adventure!

Really not sure how the 2 different sizes came about. Important to realize that you can always put taper shafts in to parallel heads and vise versa with some modifications.

I recently put graphite shafts in my irons. I made them 1/2” longer than with the steel shafts. I wanted to try a new iron head so I bought a 7 iron head. When I put it on the shaft that my other 7 was on I noticed it was 1/2” shorter. The hosel on the new iron was 1/4” shorter and 1/4” deeper. If I buy all the new irons should I add extensions or soft step them ?

Far better off using a lighter shaft or B weight heads. You aren't going to see much change in weight from any kind of stepping.

? If you are not sure about stiff or extra stiff shaftswill going stiff and soft stepping be an inbetween alternative? Thanks

Going X stiff and soft stepping would give you a slightly softer shaft closer to stiff though a single step makes for a very small change.

It's all about the cpm's. Assuming the head weights are on point, then the cycles allow you to tune the set for the right feel... not just flight. Not everybody fits neatly into regular, stiff, or x-stiff clubs. I also assume that you were using either tapered shafts or parallel shafts already cut to spec at the tips. Personally, I prefer parallel shafts because you can trim just the right amount to match your desired cpm's.

I am going to build a set of irons and soft step my shafts 2X. At 67 years of age I have a slower swing speed which puts me into a regular, soft regular or possibly senior flex shaft. I have a set of rare Fenwick shafts that are stiff flex. Will the 2X soft step will take them from the stiff flex down to the regular or soft regular that I am looking for?
@EFG2
@EFG2 Жыл бұрын
1 step is usually about 1/3 of a flex so they will still be on the stiff side of R after a double soft step.

@@EFG2 Thank You for the information. The shafts I am thinking about using are NOS Fenwick World Class Frequency Matched 6.5`s. I want to put them into a set of Ping Eye 2 irons. The clubs are 5-9 PW & SW. The shafts are uncut brand new 3 - PW. any advice or insights on this endeavor would be greatly appreciated.

@@robertparshall1169 The hardest part with old Pings is pulling the old shafts out usually. After that they are pretty straight forward especially since you don't need a ferrule.

Pretty similar to what I expected. We often get so caught up in the minutiae of our equipment and ignore big things. I think a really underrated factor is sole design. Find a sole profile that fits your swing on course.

What would the difference be between hard stepping a S400 and soft stepping a X100?
@EFG2
@EFG2 Жыл бұрын
Would make them about the same in flex and probably 3g difference in weight.
@CaribSurfKing1

@@EFG2X100, just like KBS tour V shafts are larger in circumference from the first step to the grip, that’s how they lower flight and feel much stiffer. A hard stepped S400 still feels softer overall than a soft stepped X100. Also, S400 would feel heavier due to hard stepping and being actually heavier. In all my years of building my own clubs, shaft weight and circumference of shaft and finally, head weight, make nearly all the difference

Shafts are about YOUR timing - a good player will take 5 shots & adjust what they're doing to better TIME whatever club they're given. However, the closer the shaft is naturally in weight & flex profile to how THEY want to FEEL the release through the ball, the faster they will swing. Rahm has used the same Driver Shaft for a decade - he's built his release with that shaft. Every PGA Pro plays the same iron shaft they built their game with in College & they never change.
@sageagbonkhese4091
@sageagbonkhese4091 Жыл бұрын
Agreed. It's about dialing in feel. Adding slightly more stiffer or flexible feel is good for some players. The average golfer can't adjust like he could and make good swings. A great example is watching good good do thrift store challenges. Most of the guys struggle really hard trying to swing with a shaft that doesn't have the right "flex".
